Bear in mind it's only Sata 2.

Yeah. I Dow speeds and I though it could not be right.

Good old crucial m4 is still a very very "solid" ssd even today.

*did you see what I did there? :P

SATA 2 is 3 Gbps IIRC, so would do fine for a steam folder as still much faster than a HDD? I will keep the M4 for boot drive.

You should be on a stage-the next one out of here, badum-tish :D

Crucial has a new range of SSD's, V4 range. Thinking about a 256GB one of these for the steam folder. What do you think, going for €167 on mindfactory-and the way SSD prices are going in a months time it will probably be <€150..

Great price for a 256GB SSD, performance isn't as good as the m4 mind. I'd probably spend the extra €20 and get the m4 (http://www.mindfactory.de/product_info.php/info/p792416_256GB-Crucial-m4-Slim-2-5Zoll--6-4cm--SATA-6Gb-s--MLC-synchron--CT256M4SSD1-.html) or the samsung 830 (http://www.mindfactory.de/product_info.php/info/p792118_256GB-Samsung-830-Series-2-5Zoll--6-4cm--SATA-6Gb-s-MLC-Toggle--MZ-7PC256B-WW-.html)

That Crucial V4 has been around a few months; I think the announcement is only the official release. I'd take one over similar budget SATA II SSDs, but they'd still have to cut the price a bit more. If you keep your eyes open, you can get the M4 nearly as cheap which is one heck of an SSD.

Hi all, a noob is back for some questions,

    1.

How do I use an IDE hard disk on a sata MOBO.

You can get docks that will do it or adapters - sirilo or something - I think I chucked mine years ago sorry :(

You can buy my dock if you want ;)

It seems I might not need one.

Is it a good idea to buy a used motherboard from dabs.ie

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,710 ✭✭✭Monotype

Despite dabs.ie listing used stuff, I don't think you can actually buy it unless you buy from their British site, dabs.com.

I also tried dabs.com and no luck.

    I've just emailed them.

it'll be cheaper and less hassle to get an adapter.

if you're in no hurry, dealextreme.com do them cheap, but they take a long time to deliver.

if you're in Limerick you could borrow mine.

alternatively, if you have an Asrock board, they provide quite a few legacy ports if you look around the motherboard. my €170 z77 extreme6 has a floppy drive connector

Floppy disc.... How far did we got...

*need to transfer file. Break file with winrar in to 5 1.2 mb parts. Get 5 floppies and put those parts in to them. Carefully put them in some sort of case and of you go.
You try to winrar them out and one part is corrupted... Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu

Now: take 8gb USB stick. Throw in file with a few movies, your car music, porn. Done!

Looking to get a 256GB SSD now myself, I see you guys recommend the M4 or Samsung 830. Is this M4 the correct one? Considering the Samsung 830 is a bit cheaper, would it be better getting that or is the M4 still the best?

Seems after taking shipping into account, Pixmania is pretty much the same price as mindfactory or Hardwareversand.

    Thanks!

amazon.co.uk should be a bit cheaper when you count delivery.

Just get the Samsung if it's cheaper.

Thanks, they are a bit cheaper alright :) Will go with the Samsung in that case. Has been a while since I last got a SSD, I assume they don't come with a SATA cable? Will need to pick one up otherwise.

Pixmania also have horrible after sale service. I don't like to bring it up everytime some one is looking to buy off them but I don't want people to go through the same sh*te I went through.

If you are only using a laser card what about this , I don't really know anything about this SSD but if you get any problems it shouldn't be too hard to send back .

Edit: That site is charging over €160 extra for the Samsung 830

why not switch banks? Ulster bank offer accounts that have visa debit cards with no charge (apart from the stamp duty, but blame the government for that :P) Perament TSB also offer accounts with the visa debit card BUT they have charges if you are over 18/not a student
