19 medals for Phelps, 15 Gold, 2 Silver and 2 Bronze. Never be done again.

Greatest Olympian ever. Great stuff to watch
I disagree. He pretty good ........but
    • He's fortunate enough to be American - add over half a dozen medals in relays (mostly gold)
    • He competes in an event in which there are numerous medal opportunities - too much if you ask me. Multiple styles + distances + medleys
    • Most of his individual medals are in butterfly - pretty damn pointless if you ask me. You don't see several 100m athletic events for different running styles, backwards, sideways, jumping/sack race.

Freestyle is the only swimming event that counts in my eyes.

I thought it was a horrendous snorefest tbh. Brazil didn't look bothered. Stupid niggly fouls didn't help.

You must not watch a lot of women's football then! :D

GB drew the fouls out of Brazil so intelligently.

True. And if that game was as good as it gets I won't be watching much more.

Yeah, the drugs are a great help :pac:

I have two kids who swim and neither are on anything stronger than milk.

If you think you'll get a body like they do from drugs, please point me in their direction. (They're for the wife. :pac:)

Ah we'll get by without ya.

    TheFA.com ‏@thefadotcom

The attendance at Wembley Stadium is 70,584, a record for a women's international in England. Previous best was just over 29,000

It didn't look like that many! I'm amazed and maybe a little skeptical of just how true that is.

    Glad I could!

But please feel free to refute any of my points, especially re. butterfly stroke.

Olympic motto is Faster, Higher, Stronger. When high jumpers started using the Fosbury flop technique there wasn't a completely new event created.

Nice crowd, wonder did they pay to get in though, just with the complaints of emtpy seats.

Crowds were good for all GB games, it's games like Japan v Honduras where the problem lies (in the football anyway).

The USA can play a bit in the basketball can't they :D

Durant, James, Bryant an absolute priviledge to watch!

    Great LeBron slam dunk there!

A truly amazing achievement. Words can not describe what Michael Phelps has achieved as an athlete.

Ireland has a total of 23 Olympic medals, 8 Gold, 7 Silver and 8 Bronze. Michael Phelps 19 medals ; 15 Gold, 2 Silver, 2 bronze. Insane statistic. :)

I dunno. I'd imagine there was a few complimentary tickets alright! I don't mind if they paid in or not so long as they were watching and had a positive experience.

Even at that, the women's football never really seems to sell much. This match was double the attendance of the previous record!

Funny how the second five for the USA in the basketball were the ones who blew up, and gave the US the big lead. But yeah, great to see such amazing talents live on terrestrial tv

He would have made a fine number 8 for the Irish rugby team :D

or wasted as a county legend at GAA :(

Would probably make no difference. We dont have the same funding, facilities, etc for potential stars from an early age compared to the states.

It's extreme to suggest only freestyle should count, but the likes of Bolt can only realistically compete in 100, 200 + relay, whereas the likes of Phelps potentially have 7/8 events (many of them relays). Of course being able to compete in all of those is a great achievement, but medal count alone shouldn't determine the "greatest olympian".

Well holy god, that's the biggest pile of shite I've ever read. If only sack racing was an olympic sport, we'd have one gold anyway.

Well done Phelps, an olympic legend.

Phelps achievement is amazing but i still think Steve Redgrave's five gold in five separate olympics is the best

Oh here goes, longevity good - greatest ever, nope.

    individual event > team event

How many of Redgrave's gold medals were in single sculls?

Should put some of these in unpopular opinions :pac:

Carmelo Anthony and Kevin Love on fire. Simply awesome. Will anyone come close? You'd hope Spain would give them a game in the expected final!

I love watching Phelps swim I was so tense at the last part I really wanted him to win the gold , silvers still good hes still got a record number of medals :). And I just read that he had three more races to go before he retires. I hope he manages to get a gold. He's amazing.

I'm glad the Le Clos RSA guy won it was nice watching him receiving the gold medal.

Just curious why is pretty much every sport on in the olympics but rugby?
Ireland would have a good chance of getting a medal in the rugby if that was included even though there good at other sports.
It's just strange how every sport but rugby is included.
