    first world problems ffs
    Meh.
We live on a technology focused world. Other western countries have it so why not Ireland. Don't see why its a problem for you. Better to advance then stay stagnant.

Probably not for 10ish years, Ireland's phone network and broadband are some of the worst in the world!

I used to think that too until I moved away years ago. NZ is worse, enforced low data caps, slow d/l & u/l speeds, little competition in the mobile & broadband market.

you know not many countries have '4G' yet, only Scandinavia, the US (only in a few major cities), Japan and Korea. Australia's rolling it out too

Honestly Ireland's Mobile networks are amongst the top in the world.

I wonder if OP enjoyed the benefits of dial up modems. Now those were awesome!

3.4kb/s download speed like a boss!!! I had downloaded 600mb movies at that speed!

Just say I bought a Samsung Galaxy S III today.

Just say 4g was up and running next year.

Would the Galaxy S III be able to use 4g?

Who gives a shit? 4G means that Boardsies can post snide comments 6% faster. Is that worth it?

    I'm with Voda.
Will I ever have the 3G ... That I'm paying through the nose for.

6 months if rubbish service & no meaningful resolution.... In the arms of the ombudsman now.

    Cambodia has better broadband services.

I have Eircom NEXT GEN BROADBAND! They started rolling it out this time last year, and now instead of 2mb down, and 0.3kb up, I get 5mb down and 0.40kb up!

Pffft, UPC you say? Yeah well at least Eircom doesnt cut out and go down every few days.

I pay €80 per month for my landline, 200+ channels, 100mb broadband and no cap!

I then pay €35 per month on my phone for 45,000 any networks minutes, 10,000 any network texts 15gb with 14.4mbps downlink :D

    Ditto.
Gotta love upc and emobile :D

Earlier today I spent 10 minutes waiting for a webpage to load up on my mobile on the train.

Fidelma Healy Eames probably blocking the signal with her big wide face.

Neither should a lot of things; mainly war, disease & severe malnutrition.

I'm sure the point is that slow webpages are consistently higher on our lists than theirs.

Also, I'm pretty sure a 10 minute wait is an extreme example. I doubt many people experience similar in their normal browsing.

I'm not saying it doesn't matter, but lets keep things in context.

Irleand is only a second world developing country. (well, it was developing up until a few years ago...all that seems to have stopped now:mad:)

Basically, Ireland is rubbish. If we want 4G or anything decent, we have to move.

Actually, this raises a point that I heard being discussed about UK services. Should money be invested to give the better reception areas the maximum and best reception/service that there is, or should they stay as they are and the money spent on remote areas to give them a mediocre service?

14.4 - 26.6Mbps (depends where you are!). This means downloads of about 2 - 3Mbps. The limiting factor is generally the device you are using. Most handsets have a max connection of 7.2Mbps, so download about 800Kbps. Standard 3G is about 400Kbps connection, so download about 60Kbps. EDGE (E on a phone) is max 256Kbps, so roughly 40Kbps download.

    Excuse my ignorance!

I have a Nokia E71 from this quote I'd only get 40kbps download.
If I had a Samsung Galaxy S III I would get 60kbps download.

So that would be a 50% increase in Kbps download!

    Am I right?

Bring a book and live without the web for a few hours.

Kinda reminds me of this guy.

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

Speed means jack when mobile networks have silly caps. 15gb p/m is not huge by any stretch of the imagination. We need fast, reliable, cheap and high cap services.

Just got a tip the other day that Imagine is going into the mobile business so we should see 4G with them as the Wimax service they use is 4G as far as i know.

Ireland is a first world country, with a low population, and with backwards looking leaders. With the people behind this country, we can be anything we want to be.

Ireland isn't rubbish. It has excellent mobile infrastructure. I can go into the type of equipment if you like to prove it.

If we want 4G 'or anything decent'. we will have to wait less amount of time than if we move. The way licensing is going, it looks like we will have 4G (LTE) services way before the UK.

Don't be so pessimistic about Ireland, it's the likes of you that feed the 'you are what you say you are' mentality. Think positive, think forward.

Lima is right, the three major players have refreshed most of their equipment in the last 3 years or so. The mobile networks here are very well structured and maintained.

And WiMax isnt technically a 4G standard either.

Also all the big mobile providers when they rolled out 3g in their base stations also kept in mind 4g so they only need a module to be placed in the base stations when they are licensed to use 4g it will be a quick upgrade

For what it's worth, "4G" is actually LTE which isn't technically a 4G standard either.

There are no "real" 4G standards in use as of present AFAIk. LTE and Wimax are really just stop gaps.

WiMAX is a technology, not a company
