Earlier today I spent 10 minutes waiting for a webpage to load up on my mobile on the train. Sick of it.

Probably not for 10ish years, Ireland's phone network and broadband are some of the worst in the world!

    In before the lock/move :p

the reason we don't have 4G networks in Ireland is because comreg are painfully slow when it comes to selling off the spectrum that 4G networks operate to the various mobile operators.

10 minutes for a webpage to load shouldnt even be acceptable in the third world.

Bits of the country dont have 2G let alone 3G.

    Whats your understanding of 4G?

4G in the states is different to 4G here. US 4G is basically just our HSPA+. There will be a rollout of 26.6Mbps as standard this year, with 50Mbps this time next year.

    4G?

The OP is having a laugh!
This country can barely cope with the present internet basic speeds we are getting through far too many outdated lines and systems.

what mbps do we have at the moment? and how do you know 50 mbps will be rolled out this time next year?

no internets on the mobile? bohooo. I can't even use my mobile to make phone calls (or receive texts) out here - have to leave the house and walk 3 minutes up the road for 3 bars of reception...

That has nothing to do with 4g. That's because we don't have proper 3g yet, nor will we for a good few years.

14.4 - 26.6Mbps (depends where you are!). This means downloads of about 2 - 3Mbps. The limiting factor is generally the device you are using. Most handsets have a max connection of 7.2Mbps, so download about 800Kbps. Standard 3G is about 400Kbps connection, so download about 60Kbps. EDGE (E on a phone) is max 256Kbps, so roughly 40Kbps download.

I currently have a galaxy y, so if I got an iphone or samsung galaxy s would that be much faster for downloads do you reckon?

From what I can see on that map, there is only bits that dont have 2G. Tiny patches around SW Donegal, Mayo, and Galway.

Galaxy S doesn't have 3G I think? The Y has 7.2Mbps so more than enough. Once you have a connection of around 512Kbps most sites should be fine on the phone. What symbol comes up where your network strength is?

Usually all bars are showing up, its just painfully slow most of the time. Watching youtube is completely out of the question.

    G/E/3G/H

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 511 ✭✭✭delad

Did you try turning it off and turning it on again? Seriously, sometimes the internet gets really slow on my phone but if I turn it off and on again it comes back really fast for a while.

It's more than likely your phone than. Clear the cache/cookies on it and you should see an improvement

Broadband is slow here so never mind your mobile internet.

Parts of Africa have faster broadband than us :pac: (I think)

The nerve of those Africans. How dare they? You'd think they'd wait their turn, as second class citizens.

Ok I'll clear the cache and try the turning off and on trick, but I know it still wont be fast enough to watch videos on it. They should get their fcuking finger out and roll out the faster networks quicker. Our government should wake up and do something about it. Its a joke Bill.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 863 ✭✭✭boardzz

Should see 4G(LTE) next year maybe with speeds capable of 50-80 MBps. When spectrum becomes free after the TV channels are switched off then mobile companies can deploy 3G coverage in existing 2G areas.

I would be 95% certain it's not a network issue!

The white bits? Have you ever used 2g? It's only useful if you desperately desperately need to check your email. Web browsing (other than sites like boards which use very little bandwidth) is just not worth it.

I just read on rte that the government has announced a 2.5 billion bullsh1t stimulus package, and not one red cent is going towards upgrading our broadband and wireless internet infrastructure.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,635 ✭✭✭eth0

Hopefully never. All the companies that would potentially be doing the roll out of 4G are scumbags of the highest order (mobile phone companies). I don't want to see those shaggers having the monopoly on internet in Ireland and being used as an excuse not to bring in proper fibre optic broadband everywhere. They'd have us all behind NAT with severely limited upload speeds, censorship and usage limits

    America's 4G is our 3G

Have the telcos ripped off people enough to pay for the 3G licenses yet ?

    4G is a marketing term

Expect more hype because the telcos will need to rip you off sell you more stuff to pay for the extra spectrum auctioned off because of the change to Digital Terrestrial TV

on a side note regarding marketing hype and mobile speeds

I heard recently we actually have some top notch network infrastructure available here but some bs I can't recall stops us from getting to make use of it.

I don't see the problem, i can read boards.ie, email, FB , buy stuff and internet bank on my phone with zero hassle, streaming is a bit slow but not a big issue. Pretty happy with my service tbh and my broadband is grand too!

We are stuck in the dark ages i'm afraid when it comes to broadband. Actually come to think of it we are stuck in the dark ages for almost everything.

Pure nonsense, I've seen LTE in action. Speeds are fantastic. 80 Mbs on a crude network.

Yes I have used 2G. Only for talk and txt though, ie, what it was intended for for.

Although I'm thinking my point re some of the country not having 2G was totally missed. Meaning that some bits of the country cant even talk and txt (2G) (the white patches on the 2G map), let alone use web services (3G+).

Just did a speedtest on my phone there.

    galaxy s2 on o2.

    2.5mb down and 1.1 up.

Thats not too shabby for 3g only.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,442 ✭✭✭ofcork

    I got 7349kbps down and 1536kbps up on a htc one s on o2.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,041 ✭✭✭cocoshovel

I have Eircom NEXT GEN BROADBAND! They started rolling it out this time last year, and now instead of 2mb down, and 0.3kb up, I get 5mb down and 0.40kb up!

Pffft, UPC you say? Yeah well at least Eircom doesnt cut out and go down every few days.
