The problem is if he spends a year on the bench, his value will half.

If he stays, we need to keep him for 2/3 years.

Why would he spend the season on the bench though?

Borini could be a slow starter/not great.

Suarez could get injured. Bellamy is a luxury. Dempsey is still only speculation.

The season is a long one with Europe, we need 5 strikers/forwards. Most weeks we could have 2 games, particularly with a cup run, so there's lots of potential games, 50+.

    Suarez
    Borini
    Carroll
    Dempsey
    Bellamy.

Imo, that's a decent front 5 for the squad.. Different types of players too.

I just think his value is at its peak at the minute.

If he's kept and used regularly, then there's no problem.

But if he used in the manner in which he was for the first half of last season, then he will struggle once again and his value will only plummet.

Rodgers needs to decide now whether to cut our losses, or stick by him for the next 2/3 seasons.

And if we could get £15-20m for him now, and he's only playing a cameo role from the bench or in EL games, then that's alot of money to have tied up in a squad player that could be used to strengthen the first 11.

Suarez speaks openly about Evra saga .. No holds barred.

    http://bit.ly/LwqXpY
Luis Suarez has re-opened the row over his race ban last season, despite being ordered by Liverpool not to discuss it.

The Uruguayan has accused Manchester United of wielding their political power to get him suspended for his controversial comments aimed at United defender Patrice Evra.

The Liverpool striker revealed he was so devastated by the effects of his Evra racism ‘trial’, he was left in tears for days on end as his reputation took a battering.

Speaking to a TV station in his homeland, where the forward is preparing to captain their football team at this summer's Olympics, Suarez offered another explosive insight into his controversial row with Evra.

    In it, he claimed:

    * United are the political power in English football.

    * The Old Trafford club contrived to get him banned.

    * It was Evra's fault that the pair didn't subsequently shake hands.

    * That the handshake issue was a second conspiracy against him by United.

    * He and his wife were reduced to tears by the ordeal.

    * Even United fans offered him support.

In the wide-ranging interview with TV show RR Gol, Suarez revealed his Anfield bosses have asked him not to speak about the Evra affair.

But he didn't hold back as he said: "It was so hard what happened to me. I don't show my emotions on the field, but outside I do - and I cried a lot with all the Evra stuff.

"The trial (disciplinary hearing) week was so complicated for me. My wife and I cried a lot during that week.

"People at the club are sure that it was a way that Manchester United used to put me out of the team and stop Liverpool.

"But in England, Man United has this political power, and you have to respect that and shut your mouth."

Suarez made clear that he feels the FA's guilty verdict on a racism charge, and the subsequent eight-match ban, was inspired by United's political clout within the English game.

And he even went as far as to suggest that when he was later vilified for refusing to shake Evra's hand the next time the pair met after the verdict, it was another United conspiracy.

"It was a misunderstanding, what happened between me and Evra at Old Trafford when we were to shake hands," he insisted, but then added:

"In fact, I think it was all arranged against me again, as it had happened with the punishment.

"I promised my wife, the manager and the directors that I was going to shake my hand with Evra. Why not?, I thought, because I had no problems with him.

"I had been punished because of him, but I had no problems with shaking hands. But I was not forced to greet him. I had no problems with Evra. It was only a handshake and I was OK with that.

"The media in England showed the moment when I passed in front of him, but they didn't see that he had his hand low before.

"Only the media in Uruguay and Spain showed that I wanted to shake his hand."

Suarez revealed he felt desperate at times during the long-running saga, but said he was given a major boost from a surprising source when he met a United fan in a restaurant.

"I had to go to Manchester in a taxi for the trial. I got up at seven in the morning and I came home at nine at night. I was exhausted, I was so tired. I wanted to cry, and kick all the things around me," he added.

"I came home and I wanted to do all that, but I couldn't because my daughter was at home. There were really complicated days, and then things became harder after the punishment.

"But Man United fans respect me.

"I have an anecdote: One day, after what had happened with the Man United player, a Man United fan came to the restaurant where I was having lunch with my wife and asked for a picture. He told me, 'I admire you as a footballer.'"

The other argument is about why we should sell him. I think the notion put forward that he can't work under Rodgers system is bollocks and has little or no evidence backing it up seeing as he hasn't even trained under Rodgers yet and hasn't even been tested under the environment of the kind of system we're expecting.
He might well be completely unsuitable, but right now, without any evidence to back that assertion up, it's utter bollocks.

I think its more the fact that the noises, or lack there of, from Anfield and Rodgers in particular, would make it appear that BR doesn't think Carroll is suitable to his plans. Or rather, doesn't fancy him as a player.

If that's the case then I can't sit here and advocate keeping him, although at the moment it could all just be speculation. I agree completely with you saying that for 20m I'd walk him there myself, in fact, I said so yesterday :p

Selling Carroll leaves you very short up front I would think.

We have no idea though if Rodgers intends to replace him and I would guess he will.
We also have no idea of the true reasons behind wanting to sell Carroll.
It might be genuine football reasons or might be something else.

If you want to be analytical about (and I'd suggest the club/FSG are) things in regards to Carroll, then right now his "book value" is about £24 million.

How did you go about reaching that figure?
I would have got a cheque for 50k in the H&G days for this.

This is offensive. Andy Carroll could buy and sell you, don't forget it.

Selling Carroll and replacing him with Dempsey alone would be a big mistake in my opinion. If we get Dempsey and another, striker or forward player, then I think we could be ok.

That being said, if we do sell him, we have to get a decent figure. If we cannot then there is little point in selling him at all.

Aqua actually developed quite an edge to his game last season, regularly throwing in very aggressive borderline nasty tackles at times.

Liverpool close in on Dempsey with £10m Fulham hitman likely to seal Carroll

Brendan Rodgers is on the brink of bolstering his Liverpool strike force after agreeing a £10million fee for versatile Fulham forward Clint Dempsey.

The new manager expects the deal to be concluded before the end of the week and sees it as a significant breakthrough after his recent frustration over Gylfi Sigurdsson.

Convinced Sigurdsson would join him at Anfield after the attacking midfielder’s successful loan spell at Swansea last season, Rodgers was dismayed when Tottenham beat him to the punch.

Sigurdsson even flew to Germany earlier this summer and pleaded with Markus Babbel to let him link up with Rodgers on a permanent basis. Yet when the Hoffenheim manager sanctioned an £8m permanent transfer, Sigurdsson chose White Hart Lane.

It left Rodgers short of attacking options, particularly with Andy Carroll available to anyone willing to meet a £20m asking price, but he has wasted no time in finding a remedy in the form of Dempsey.

The 29-year-old has an impressive scoring record, as a striker or attacking midfielder, and is due on Merseyside to complete the formalities in the next few days.

Though Newcastle have failed with a loan move for Carroll, and are loathe to match Liverpool’s valuation, manager Alan Pardew is pinning his hopes on owner Mike Ashley finding some common ground with his Anfield counterparts.

Newcastle sold Carroll to Liverpool for £35m in January last year and Pardew admitted striking a compromise for the Geordie front-runner’s return is out of his hands.

He told Newcastle’s Evening Chronicle: ‘That whole process is a little bit more involved with the chairman and the board at Liverpool. We have got a great team here, a great squad, and if Andy Carroll comes it will only add to us.

'It’s been said that he’s available and if we are involved, then we will be involved because of the figures, not anything else, because we know he’s good enough.’

    11.35, July 17

Nathan Eccleston has just scored a great overhead kick to complete a more than decent hat-trick in the first training session of the day. The young striker has looked really sharp all morning but he's not been the only player to stand out. Alberto Aquilani has been impressive while Raheem Sterling's pace, Adam Morgan's finishing and Jon Flanagan's aggression - yes, even in training - all caught our eye. Put those three attributes together and you'd have some player!

Good to see it stated in that piece that Carroll is only available if we get an offer of £20m, however I'd worry with us being so open about him being surplus to requirements you have to wonder if he does end up staying the damage it'll do to his confidence & if he'll now force us to let him go at a cheaper price.
