Man 'stabs neighbour during argument over World Of Warcraft' (well, he DID say it was 'just a game')
Jordan Osborne tried to intervene with neighbours' row during online game
Claims he was 'punched and stabbed' by furious gamer who told him: 'Warcraft is my life'

An excellent essay by Erin Kissane about how to deal with Trolls:

    (Via @joekissell)

I don't think the blog's copyright will allow me to repost it here in full, otherwise I would. It's that good. It's primarily about the treatment of women online, but the ideas apply to everyone who's being bullied.

    Well worth a read.

Very idealistic and to be honest I stopped reading early on when I saw the name behind it. There is no smoke without fire, and Sarkeesian is very poorly looked upon in the gaming industry. Ironic she is mentioned in an article to combat trolling, shes the biggest troll of all : /

I don't condone the treatment she gets, and I agree on some points, that there is that typical sexist view to female video gamers, but which is in no way sinister. The assumptions made are

    A) OMFG a girl is playing a game
    B) OMG a girl is playing, she must be ****.

And Airsoft, especially in this country has the same sort of attitude except at times in a much more vulgar hostile way. There is a reason there is literally no female gamers on a regular weekend.

It should also be noted that Sarkeesian, while raising some points, albeit none of her own thinking, is making a mint with her youtube channel, videos and partnership deals she gets. And has some very shady questions to answer over where a large segment of the money she raised went.

I get more and more cringy when people with absolutely zero understanding or experience of using the internet come along and spout out how it needs to change, and what is and isnt acceptable. The simple fact is the internet is its own world, with its own rules, and people need to deal with it.

There is some TD banging on about how everyone in Ireland should be held accountable for their online actions, and measures should be put in place to ensure people can be tracked to be held accountable for comments they have made. Its beyond cringeworthy at this stage, its embarrasing and really not what these idiots should be focusing on.

    Hi All,

As of today there is a new Airsoft Adverts forum charter / rules thread.

    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showt...p?t=2056698847

Very little has changed - it's more an attempt to clarify the trading rules where they were unclear, include better explanations of how the forum works, and include answers to regular questions that cropped up from time to time.

I don't expect it to be completely flawless first time so if you could read over it and point out any errors or obvious omissions in the forum feedback thread (http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showt...p?t=2056117195) it would be much appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Steve.

Still think not being able to have an advert on another site is bollox and there needs to be a bit of growing up about it.

It reads " o well if your not exclusively using our site you cant post it at all"

There are numerous places now where people can post their adverts and I can't for the live of me understand how it is an issue.

"Hi guys, this item has been sold so I'm going to have to withdraw"

    Should be no issue.

There are Facebook pages, dedicated websites and other community websites where their trading sections didn't turn into chaos and its a much safer sale or purchase, so I think there needs to be a bit of growing up and having that rule removed.

That's the idyllic viewpoint, and since you are a reasonable and logical person, that's fine. However the reason for Boards not allowing it is sound, in my opinion, as it invites auctioneering i.e. "Well I was offered 'X' on Facebook, and 'Y' on Airsofter.ie, so if you offer me 'Z' on Adverts, then we've got a deal", which I could see a lot of people trying on.

    Thats a pretty starch difference.

Granted if the other sites allow it ( which they dont) then I can see it being a problem. But its very easily avoided by the fact there is a very clear and distinct ruling that the seller must state their price at the outset.

Many occasions there is the situation where someone drops their price as an item is too high valued or they want a quicker sale.

When have we actually every seen someone raise a price?

"Sellers are permitted to post their advert here whilst present on another site, however the price outlined in the first post cannot be increased due to influences from the advert activity on another site.

Sellers can of course drop their price if they want a quicker sale or feel they have overpriced their item"

    No, it isn't. That's Erin Kissane's point.

    Your post is foolish.

I'm afraid it is, and always has been. Anonymity and geographic distinction means that the internet will never have the same level of discourse. It's just a bit of a shame that we're raising a generation not of people who embrace this, but of people who are under the mistaken impression that they can change human nature.

Actually, recent research indicates that we are.

You are confusing freedom-of-opinion with freedom-from-consequences.

Human societies all through history have worked out rules, enforced by sanctions, to promote civilised behaviour. The details change, but the principle endures. You can read any of Bruce Schneier's recent work in support of this idea. It has also been the case that people will engage in bullying or vilification when they think they can get away with it. It's a risk/benefit analysis. People get away with conduct on the internet that they wouldn't get away with in the real world because the costs of overcoming online anonymity are so high. They often dress it up as "free speech".

That doesn't make them heroes, it makes them (and their supporters and apologists) cowards. And they're still bullies.

I think we're talking about different things here. I agree that people will come up with rules and promote civilised behaviour, in forums where that's possible. My argument is that isn't possible on the internet.

The problem is that people don't understand that, and also don't understand that
the solution isn't to take what we have now and lock it down so you have to identify yourself. If you do that, people will just go elsewhere.

Had written responses a few times, and to be honest bit of a waste. You've got some good points, to which I dont think most will disagree with, and G has some good counters as well which I also agree with.

Being involved in gaming since essentially ten years of age I've kinda grown up around, learned to accept and in most cases ignore the antics that goes on around the gaming world which is mostly flaming, retards, racism ,sexism, stupidity, illiteracy etc. etc.

But I don't get my knickers in a twist when I hear it. People are just to quick to be offended and outraged, especially on the internet. In a perfect world yeah, people online would be held to the same laws and moral code of ethics of the real world. But its not a perfect world......its going to happen. I'm just being a realist about it.

I can get called every name under the sun, and it doesn't bother me, I just carry on with my games, reading forums whatever the situation is. And I believe thats simply because I'm a product of, what G describes as a generation. I've grown up with the explosions of multiplayer gaming, social media, forums and the likes, essentially with the main stream internet.

And rather then get outraged and getting steamy over it, it just passes me by, cause I can just ignore it.

I don't find the need to report every second taxi driver that bangs out racism about black taxi drivers.
I don't find the need to give lectures in pubs when you hear old fellas banging on about how Gay marriage is sick and wrong.
I don't find the need to report people to the Guards when they abuse, slander or verbally assault me on the internet.

At the same time, good luck to anyone who wants to crusade to bring civil morality and standards to the internet.

But I'd prefer if it wasn't people lining their pockets with profit claiming its for campaigns and ****e

Stupid amount of fine woman in that film. Most definitely going to be a **** film, but the female count alone is making it look like a worthy look.

Anyone else getting ads for breastfeeding.ie appearing on this page? Ad engines need to get a bit smarter at understanding the context in which their keywords are being used.

    * btw boards overlords, your mobile site is crap, the links in thread notification emails always take you to the first post of the whole thread. It's a pain to have to have to scroll, click and scroll to get to the most recent one.
