Nice! I'm debating between 256 and 512 for my laptop... My brother's in the US at the moment, so he could get me a 512GB drive for... wait for it... €314! :P

Uh oh I've messed something up! I put the windows installation files on a harddrive, booted to that and began installing, selected ssd to install to, it did it's thing, then I removed the hdd with the installation, restarted and all of a sudden no more windows - I need to have the hdd connected and boot from it for windows to run, but all the windows files seem to be on the ssd. What should I do?!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,181 ✭✭✭Serephucus

Reinstall, with only the SSD plugged in. That's what you should be doing with any new Windows installation; only have one drive installed. Windows likes to throw random files on other drives for some reason.

Damn, I'll go see if I can find a hdd enclosure so I can install via usb. I don't have a disk drive so that's why the extra drives in it :P

Yah, decided to bite the bullet. It's a sin not to get one for those prices!
Will be my pure steam and Diablo 3 ssd. I will still keep my old one for bf3, program's and windows.

    314eu is a great price. I would just get it m8. It's still 379eu for m4 512gb on komplett

Btw they did not had sata cables in sock FFs :( will have to rob one from dell again! :(

Huh? Did you put the windows iso on an internal hard drive and boot from that or something? Do you not have a 4GB flash drive?

I have no flash drives :P, I did a win2usb install onto an internal hd then booted from that. It seems to have been fixed by reinstalling with the drive connected by usb :D. Installing drivers now so hopefully it will stay working

A bit sparse on details! I didn't know that CRTs actually had monetary value.

Some of the bottom end AMD boards still have serial ports. This is probably because they can still use some very old chipsets in their boards. It's probably were all those leftover bits go.

Higher is the new normal, the remaining sellers have said as much.

They're slowly dribbling down alright. It's very poor show that they cut warranties as an excuse. They probably need all the money they can get before they go bust in the takeover off SSDs. This is what happens when we're only down to two major companies in 'competition'!

    500gb x 2 random-reused HDDS

Had a 500gb old WD black just randomly stop working a while ago too, that would have been in there as well :'[

Here it is though, so messy inside I'm a bit embarrassed to show it :D

Having a weird problem where windows keeps downloading the same 100 or so updates and then fails to update -- then downloads them again the next time it's on, and repeats. I've 'hidden' the updates now like what a few forum posts have said but it doesn't seem to have stopped it, for the moment I've just turned off windows update. I'll try to remember to check manually sometimes but I don't want to put up with waiting 15 minutes for my pc to shutdown..

Also I've realized that I have another little problem - my eircom router is only letting me connect at 100mbps, trying to fix that I found an old 8 port switch but that is only connecting at 100mbps too, would buying a 1gbps switch let me have faster internal traffic? Main probem is sending and receiving 200mb files between this computer and the printer (Konica Minolta C220, don't know what it's fastest transfer speed is either and I can't see it in any of the documentation.) Getting about 1 MB/s transfer to the printer at the moment so waiting 5 minutes for something to print isn't very fun! Was looking at this switch, too. Looks cheap and seems to do what I need.

Oh oh oh also; high res pictures to come of the new build once I've cleaned the room and re-arranged some things.

Seems to have good reviews on amazon anyway:
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/TP-Link-Gigabit-Unmanaged-Desktop-TL-SG1005D/dp/B000N99BBC/
It should do what you're asking.

Isn't there a windows setting where you can downloaded them and then install. I find that some of them don't work without a clean restart.

Edit: Your printer supports 1000Mbps. Product brochure page 8.

All of the ones being downloaded are 'important' so only happen when the computer is being shutdown - takes ages and then when it's turned on again it gets stuck at something like configuring windows updates then eventually just boots straight into windows and starts downloading again.

Thanks for checking that for me, I read over that and missed it!

See if you can check which updates are failing, then installing all the other ones apart from those. Then install the rest one at a time.

    failed.png

Quite a few are failing :P.

Also having a weird problem when I print, say if I want 8 copies of a file, which is say 600mb, instead of sending 600mb to the printer and doing 8 copies, it attempts to send 4800mb to the printer. And with this ridiculously slow transfer speed I can't use this. Frantically trying to find a fix for this because I need some things printed

When I use windows update, I do get a fair few updates that fail to install, but not as much as that:

Perhaps try the troubleshooter. Unlike in the previous version of windows, the W7 troubleshooter actually does fix problems  :pac:
