Is it time to build a tunnel between Ireland and Britain.

    The Great Depression was tackled in the US by a massive public building programme eg. Th Hoover Dam. Is it time for a grandiose project such as a tunnel between the islands of Britain and Ireland. Which would finally physically link Ireland to the European mainland and be a boom for tourism and the economy in general.

    There is a huge pool of highly skilled highly motivated ex construction workers ready for the task.

    we already built a tunnell in dublin.

    It ran way over costs and leaks.

    Why in gods name would this lead to a tourism boom , if you were coming from mainland europe you could fly in a fraction of the time :rolleyes:

    This aint Escape to Victory. There are easier ways to escape this place than build a tunnel. Catch a plane or a ferry.

    We also built a large water tower and pumping plant by the side of the M50 that has never been used,as it constantly leaks and cant be fixed either.

    Also it was built to the old EU Regulations so it was useless from the very second it was finished.

    Great way to invest/spend a load of money.:eek::rolleyes::mad:

    the disadvantages outweigh the advantages.

    Ireland has a population of under 6million, how on earth will they pay for the costs insured this will take forever.

    It taking us ages to complete rails tracks talk less of this.

    Projects similar to this has been done by countries e.g orresmund link that connects sweden to denmark, this was needed has both sides had population to covers the costs also the tourist industry needed it.

    Ireland has what under 6million inhabitants who live at the peripheral of Europe.

    This IMHO is just a waste of time and resources.

    We have a huge pool of ex construction workers who were rapidly replaced by cheap foreign labour of a similar quality simply because they refused to drop their own prices from the ludicrous amounts they were getting to cement bricks together.

    Highly motivated? I don't think so. They're the ones filling the dole queues who can't wait to tell their war stories of when they were getting €1.50 a brick and how much cash they spent every week, and who now won't go and get a job because they think they're worth the crazy money they were on.

    Although, thankfully, Oz has sucked a few of the leeches out of the country in search of boom time money. Just unfortunate that the same people are destroying the reputation of the nationality while they're there.

    I would love to see a tunnel between Ireland and the UK, but to think the labour force here would do it for a reasonable rate is delusional. They priced themselves out of the work force to Polish immigrants and remain pricing themselves out of work due to their massive egos.

    In short, they can f**k themselves if they think I'll pay for them as a tax payer to be employed on a long term public project on the money they were on.

    Jobs bridge workers could be used to build it,essentially cutting out labour costs.

    Its still a physical link. That is you could in theory walk from Dublin to Vladivostok or Bangkok if he wanted to.

    By the end of 2050 when we have paid off most of the bank and national debt, we might be able to begin to afford construction of a tunnel. By then our population may also have increased as well. Even so, i don't see it as a profitable venture. The only reason for doing it would be to facilitate import/export trade.

    After the flooding last year, they still haven't fixed the poxy 2 foot tall wall along the Liffey by Guinness. It won't be don't for another 18 months apparently.
