My favourite country would be Iceland and France. The most helpful nations are the Germans, Bosnians especially the muslims and the French.

Iceland is pure wilderness with an amazing landscape yet you can drive around it - everyone should go there. France has so many regions that are totally different. Everyone goes to Paris or a big city - don't. Try the Ariege Valley and book the Niaux Cave for example (you need a car). Theres another great cave across the valley called "Vache" with a wonderful guide.

My answer depends on a bit of politics: I lived in South Africa during the 1980s, and visited a couple of "homelands" that had been made independent by the government of the day, but weren't recognised internationally. One was Transkei in the Eastern Cape region, over half the size of Ireland, which I remember as having quite spectacular forestry and mountains. It's a Xhosa area, most famous as being Nelson Mandela's birthplace. I also passed through a smaller independent homeland nearby, Ciskei.

Later, I visited Bophuthatswana a couple of times. (Try saying that after a few beers.) It wasn't for any particularly cultural reasons: I went to Sun City, once in a party group, the other time for a Black Sabbath concert. Its independence meant that they could legalise gambling and pornography if they wanted. Which they did, making a kind--of Las Vegas in the hills which is still running today. 70s porn from film on a 30-foot screen is not something you see every day ... :eek:

Thank god I don't have a mortgage and have a good job, heading to the philippines next trip.... I find travelling through Asia to be the best continent.
