Haven't read all of the thread yet so I'm not sure if this has been said - I really think motorbikes should be illegal. I find it extraordinary that they are legal. It's illegal not to wear a seatbelt but its ok to drive around on a motorbike..wtf?

Nah, gob****es in cars with a grudge against bikers should be illegal.

Having riden a bike for30 years now I have never had a serious accident but the near misses i have had were always caused by car drivers so perhaps cars should be illegal going by your logic.

Using the word 'liberal' as an offensive term should be illegal

Pseudo-liberals ruined the word, and it's lost it's true meaning now. Very sad indeed.

    Street begging
You should thank your lucky stars you weren't born into a situation where street begging was how you could survive day to day then.

Can people really be so sheltered as to believe the inconvenience of seeing a beggar to be superior to the value of begging as a way for the most disadvantaged to live day-to-day.

I'll tell you what would happen if begging were banned - you'd have a greater incidence of petty shoplifting, petty theft and perhaps violent crime. Addicts, the homeless and the disadvantaged do actually need to eat, at the end of the day.

I never cease to be amazed at how black and white some people believe the world to be. Do you seriously believe that making begging illegal is an answer to anything? Sure why don't we just ban poverty while we're at it?

I didn't say anything against motorbike drivers - I just find the potential for accident so high that i think they should be banned. My brother and his girlfriend were killed on a motorbike due to a truck driver's bad driving. Unsurprisingly their injuries were horrific - particularly his. That is why I think they should be illegal. I didn't say you had to agree with me.

Good idea, can't believe it hasn't been thought of before.

    Let's make poverty illegal.

    No poverty=No bums.

    Things that should be illegal....hmmmm.....

Fat chicks in mini skirts (ewwwww!)
    Slow ass drivers
    Tractors on public roads
    Wearing sandals with socks

TDs getting paid extra money for the days when they decide to actually show up for the Dáil. They should have to attend a minimum of 70% of Dáil sessions to get paid at all! If you can't attend frequently, don't run for election!

Intimidating people/antisocial behaviour on public transport.

    Complaining about the weather :pac:

If we enforced begging laws I would expect us to enforce all the other laws too in relation to petty crime and not allow society to be blackmailed or terrorized. Your argument is basically trying to persuade me to hand free money to terrorist blackmailers and scumbags. It's a hell of a lot different from persuading me to help someone who is down on his luck but who would never harm anyone.

Beggars get free every scam going. St Vincent de paul money, rent allowances, disability allowances, free bus pass, free gas, esb and mobile phone allowances, free meal in drop in centres, free family food parcels etc. All on top of the money from gob****es who give them money for sitting on their holes. Thinking of just one beggar who sat on his arse in st stephens green for years while I ran by him in a hurry every day because I had to work.. the guy always has a cigarette in his mouth. I can't afford to smoke yet he and people like yourself expect me to hand HIM money ?

No, it's not. I am not interested in persuading you of anything.

Personally I would suggest nobody should make a direct contribution as a general rule, and donate to homeless or charitable services instead. Having said that, it doesn't happen, so I don't blame the homeless or disadvantaged for making direct appeals and I don't believe it should be illegal for those who want to contribute in that way to do so.

Roll back a minute there horse. St Vincent de Paul money, rent allowances and so on are "scams"?

I'm going to have to stop taking you seriously now.

If it's such a great life, why don't you swap places with him?

Yes you are. I am part of the general public and those are the people you are speaking to when you step up onto your soapbox.

The homeless and charitable services already get a lot of money. The Irish citizen pays a lot of tax for social welfare etc. Free meals , medical cards, allowances and cash are readily available. Most of the unemployed are surviving on far less than the homeless get but they don't feel the need to harass the general public to supplement their incomes. And they do not support apologists and enablers like yourself.

They are scams when the recipient doesn't deserve them and takes the money away from those who do. Someone who is working full time as a ''beggar'' earning hundreds in tax free cash isn't eligible or incapable of work and definitely is not in the needy category and is far richer than the long term unemployed who actually obey the law.

You sure love the soundbite and the grandiose attention seeking flounce. The negligible value of your opinion is not enough to make any difference.

Because I am morally opposed to it. Is this concept of morals a strange concept to you ?

Better than someone who is long term unemployed but who doesn't beg. Think about it. He is not shabbily dressed and he is always smoking. Who can afford to smoke all day? Just saying.

The odd time around O'Connell bridge in Dublin I see young lads in school uniform out and about with soup and sandwiches for the homeless

This would be early now, maybe 8am so before they start in school

    Fair play lads
I don't know what school they are in but was good to see

What about during miserable wet, cold days? What if he's homeless? Mentally ill? The latter is a strong possibility. It's just bizarre that you showed a bit of resentment towards him because you had to hurry to work. Give me a job instead of his life any day.

On cold wet days he stays at home as do many of the ''regulars''
It is bizarre that you refuse to acknowledge that there are many scammers on the streets. This guy is not mentally ill. I have had years to get to know him and his associates. This is his chosen ''recession proof'' career.
I find it bizarre that apologists like you are everywhere. I resent paying taxes for his dole while he refuses to pay taxes on his street income and while he can choose not to get out of bed or to head off to Spain etc if he feels like it. That is not bizarre at all. Your attitude is bizarre. Not mine.

Hardly an apologist or bizarre to speak about the realities that lead to begging. Sitting on a bench all day - doesn't seem like fun IMO. I never said there aren't scammers, I find it hard to believe they're as numerous as you say though. You'd acknowledge there are beggars and homeless people who have genuinely fallen on hard times though wouldn't you? Where's your proof he goes to Spain?
