This is also from the email from Saorview

There will also be a "bug" on the screen. This will be on screen permanently, except during ad breaks. The bug appears as:

    X October 24th

This is to indicate that if you are seeing the bug on your screen, you will lose service on October 24th.

X October 24th is now displayed on RTE1 and RTE2 analogue. Not on TV3.

The X is very faint on a snowy reception. Not really sure many people will understand it. Can someone upload a photo?

Also on TG4 as gaeilge "X 24 Deireadh Fómhair"

I don't have analogue TG4 tuned in so i could not check. I suppose it's up to TV3 to decide if and when they want to put up a warning telling viewers when TV3 analogue will be switched off.

    RTE1:

Also on RTE2. As said above, nothing on TV3.

    TG4:

One of these commercial decisions that TV3 must make?

The bug would only be on TV3 80% of the time.

Ah! just as I type a big sign has come up over Judge Judy with a full message about the DSO.

I noticed this "24 October" DOG today, as others said the red 'x' is hard to see depending what's behind it (the DOG is transparent), it all gets squashed even further and pushed further to the middle of the screen on 4:3 programmes, and to someone who isn't fully aware of ASO I don't think it explains things very well...

If I get my capture card working again I'll make some screenshots.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,641 ✭✭✭✭Elmo

I think it will have the effect of getting people to ask what does this 24 October Mean. Also it doesn't look all that transparent to me The X is possible too small and red on a dark background is difficult to read.

RTÉ Continuity Announcers are telling viewers what it means.

Just got it working in time for this at the start of Nationwide today:

    207621.jpg

    During normal programming:
    207625.jpg

It's the same on RTÉ Two, and depending on the background picture the 'X' is not very visible:
    207624.jpg

The DOG is positioned slightly higher on TG4; maybe RTÉ put it lower to avoid problems like this:
    207622.jpg

Please note due to the deinterlacing used in some of these screenshots, the vertical resolution may have been reduced.

The 'X' and text may not be transparent, but the grey box surrounding it certainly is so the main image affects visibility. The 'X' needs to be much bigger and with a black/white border if they want to keep it red - PAL chroma resolution is not good enough for it to be clearly visible at all times in its current form. Many TV sets will have much worse comb filters than my capture card.

I missed the opportunity to take screenshots of the DOG during Reeling In The Years before Nationwide - as said earlier the DOG is squashed on 4:3 programmes (just like the standard RTÉ DOGs are ) and barely legible on a 14" TV.

It is very bloody annoying, could they not have put it under the RTE logo or something

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 201 ✭✭Johnny Johnson

It is supposed to be annoying.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,327 ✭✭✭zg3409

It is supposed to be annoying. Anyone watching it should have made the move to Saorview. Analogue is on the way out. I don't get it on Saorview!

But seriously people have been asking on this thread for gentle warnings on analogue channels for users to get their finger out, and customised warnings on smaller transmission sites that are closing down for good and not being upgraded. I personally think all the warnings should only have been on analogue transmissions. Hopefully some people will start to realise the end is nigh.

I am not sure of the current Saorview converted percentage, but with a proper campaign 99% of current analogue viewers should be OK on October 25th.

There is only 142 days left, and there is a limited number of installers. The Saorview call centre has limited capacity. The boards free advice centre has limited "experts". Some people will wait until the last second but at least the DOG is a start. Hopefully the screen will flash red from the start of October urging people to upgrade.

I assume that as more calls are made to the call centre that they will increase the numbers on the phones.

I also assume that they choose the position to suit all channels hence why it is not just under the RTÉ One and Two logos. The position also reflects the end of the BUG for RTÉjr and TRTÉ on RTÉ Two, TG4 replace their BUG for Cula4.

TV3 also did this, slightly different, - TV3's said "a UHF aerial" rather than "an UHF aerial" on the RTEs!

One in Irish also on TG4

Are any Cable TV viewers in the country seeing these with analogue service?
Some cable systems may not have changed over to modulating from a digital source for analogue RTE1/2/TV3/TG4

Loathe as I am to criticise them actually doing something to get the message out, I don't see how the DOG would be less effective if it faded within a few minutes of a programme starting and/or coming back from ads.

I get it's supposed to be annoying, but it still doesn't have to be there the whole time to get the message out (speaking as an early saorview adopter, who is waiting until the last minute on some of the TV's in the house!).

They are trying to convince people to not wait until the last minute for obvious reasons.

This is a quote from an email from Saorview to retailers
It is vital to persuade consumers to upgrade to Saorview sooner rather than later. If people delay until the last minute to upgrade it is almost certain that product shortages will occur, and some installers may be unable to keep pace with the demands placed on them.

Is it an RTÉ show or a RTÉ show?

a UHF aerial or an UHF aerial?

I think I would say a for U and an for R (or is that AR).

Would you a say a month before the Saorview switchover is adequate for non pay tv users at home?

I was waiting until the last minute myself. But; I don't think I will now with thanks for the info given from Extinction.

How many registered Saorview approved suppliers are in the Republic right now at this moment?

Also, how often is a software upgrade in the STB or iDTV? How long do the upgrades last?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,416 ✭✭✭Antenna

Here are the notices shown at the start of programmes on TV3 and TG4 analog as of last Monday night. These were hurriedly taken by camera from a CRT screen.

Last night (Tuesday) I didn't see the "X24 OCTOBER" on the RTEs, but the TG4 one was still there

This is a list of approved retailers
    http://www.saorview.ie/equipment/find-a-retailer/

But if you need an aerial installed then remember that installers also supply boxes but they won't be listed as approved retailers as saorview don't allow it. This link is for registered installers http://www.saorview.ie/equipment/installers/

It's probably better to switch as soon as possible if you need aerial work, its in a customers interest to use a competent installer and there seems to be few enough registered or competent installers, there are plenty of cowboys out there.

I accept that, but I still don't think it should be a permenant DOG on the screen to get the message out. Actually, it might be more effective if it came an went.

We had many of these suggestions on this thread a few months back.

One option was a RED DOT with a text page number beside it, the text page would explain what was going on. That Ident's before and after programming had the explanation as provided in the screen shots above (and really only directed people on line and to a text page number), which would be better then at the open sequence of the programmes.

I suppose they will say it is hard to keep everyone happy all of the time, but I would suggest that they just haven't listened.

I suppose they have to take into account viewers that don't have web access or text.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 745 ✭✭✭Extinction

I'd have made it even more annoying and made it bigger and flash, the fact that the switchover is happening now seems to be lost on a lot of people who are waiting until the last minute, they are probably the same people who would complain the loudest if there is a short supply of receivers when they do want to change. A lot of customers ask if this is realy going to happen and a few have expressed their opinion that they cant see the mast switch offs happening at all. Some reckon the that the 24th of October is just a date picked to panic people into changing and that DSO will be deferred until next year so they are waiting to see what happens on the 24th.

It was deeply flawed to plan a single date for the whole country.

If it was done by region - as in the UK and other countries - It would be unlikely there would be any serious problems with shortages at supplier level. and there would be 'damage limitation' with any other problems that might arise for all concerned.

They should have planned to initially only switch off areas of the country where Saorsat is a non-issue, and leave areas where Saorsat is significant issue to last.

If a percentage of viewers in Dublin had to get the expensive Saorsat you may be sure it would be handled differently.

    Deeply flawed?
The RoI is one region where TV is concerned, we don't have regional TV.
UK regions such as Granada and London have a higher population than Ireland

You also need to delay switchoff to transmitters which viewers in Northern Ireland use.
You can't switch off the main transmitters and leave the local relays running, as the main transmitters feed the relays.
So which transmitters should have been switched off first?
