Next races coming up are the Masters road race in Bridgetown and the Monageer 3 mile. Anybody know if there is an entry fee to the Monageer race. Also, anyone know how the Castlecockrell 5k went.

The link from that table about the Strawberry races seems to be broken. Anyone know the web-site address or is it just on Run Ireland

Just added the Ferns 4 mile. Looks like the local local GAA club jumping on the band wagon and doing an exact copy of a race that SBR have run for years. Same distance and same route more or less. Bit unfair IMO.

It's a very well organized event and highly rated by anyone I know that has done it. There are a number of hills but the last 3 miles or so are flat.

Your comment is unfair IMO. The proceeds from the race are going back in to a volunteer run club. They are putting on a race with better extras compared to the other one, chip timing, medals.. I think people will do only one of the two races and my feeling is that this one will win out, it is on first as well which is a big advantage.

Well I'm giving an unashamed plug to the SBR race (being a member of the club) - full details are now up on Run Ireland at this link http://www.runireland.com/events/mick-murphy-memorial-four-miles-road-race-1 . We were waiting on Athletics Ireland to approve the permit, which has gone through (as Wexford has had a problem with some races being run without permits this year). Obviously I'm biased but the Mick Murphy memorial is very good value IMO, as you get a very good race, the chance to see yourself on video during the race, as much grub as you can eat afterwards, very good prizes (for those hares out there :D), chip timing this year and a finishers medal (in previous years we've had tee-shirts, goodie bags, medals), so I'm not sure where the GAA race better extras are :)

well i know which race in ferns i'll be running and it wont be a gaa one, much prefer to support an athletics club who have a pedigree of organising a good race at a good price. All ur carlow cousins will be supporting SBR on their annual road race. It seems lately that races are popping up without any great thought or respect to these more established races.

Just added the link to the Mick Murphy race to the table. On the subject of permits. If a race had a permit last year I am putting it on the table for this year and the same with races that didn't until I see different. Permits are important from an insurance point of view. Anyway, all the relevant info is on the table to help people choose.

I don't think the athletic clubs have a monopoly on organizing good races. If you look at the list, 5 of the races are organized by an athletics club and they havn't bothered to get a permit. That's a pretty good example to set to non-athletic clubs .

I feel both races have a place in Ferns , but I believe it could have been handled differently. In my opinion it will not be one or the other of the races which will lose out but rather both to some extent.

I know both races are 4 milers with both having the same starting locations but with different finishing locations, in my opinion the GAA 4 miler will be the harder.

I think it may have been a good idea for the GAA to run their race as a 5K as the route from GAA clubhouse back to GAA club would be the perfect distance for it or even make it a 2 lap and therfore a 10k.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 344 ✭✭wextipp

It's a bit unfortunate alright that they made an almost exact copy of the existing one. They even mention it on their Runireland entry, "The route is broadly similar to that used for the already well-established annual Mick Murphy Memorial Run in the town, which will be familiar to many athletes in County Wexford and beyond". I agree that a 5k or 10k would have been better. Pity they didn't talk to the athletic club first and come up with something else.

Would it be mental to drive from Dublin, do the half marathon and drive back to Dublin on Sunday?
I had planned to stay in Enniscorthy for the weekend but circumstances don't allow for this now so considering just not doing the half at all, but I would have loved to run a half and also hate wasting my €40.

I don't see the problem . Most people coming from Dublin to do the race will be doing this (including me).

I know a few People doing a marathon in leixlip at midnight on friday night/saturday morning. They are then driving to Galway to do another marathon at 9am on saturday morning and them driving to the Limerick/Tipperary border to do a 5 mile race at 7pm and then driving back to Dublin.

    Now that is mental :D

    Hi all,

This is about the Ferns Four-Mile Run organised by Ferns St Aidans GAA club, that's already been mentioned here.

As a member of the commmittee organising the run, please allow me to clarify a few points (I know this should have been done much earlier, but I was away on holidays and have only just seen this discussion now):

    - Our run is being organised with the help and full support of Sliabh Bui Rovers (SBR) Athletics Club
    - The Chairman of SBR is even a member of our organising committee
    - The four-mile distance was chosen at his suggestion, with the idea being it would complement the existing Mick Murphy Run, rather than being in competition with it
    - He has undertaken to encourage the regular Mick Murphy runners to also participate in our run, and we in return will be encouraging all our entrants to take part in theirs. Similarly, both clubs will be providing stewards and other support for both events
    - SBR will also be helping us to publicise our event by handing out flyers at regular Athletics Club meetings in the run-up to it
    - It was at the specific request of the SBR Chairman that we didn't announce the link-up between the clubs at the outset, as he was satisfied to just take a background supporting role, but now it seems it has become important to point it out

Wextipp, thanks for adding our event to the list. I was actually just coming on here now to ask you to do so.

Bewley's Berry, if you're a member of SBR, it's probably just the case that you didn't know about the help we're getting when you posted your previous message. A quick chat to ourselves (you can get me at 086 2737617 if you like) or your chairman should alleviate any concern you might still have.

I hope this clears things up, and again, sorry for not posting here earlier, before any misunderstanding occurred.

Hope to see at least some of you in Ferns on August 12!

No problem, I'll be updating the list later to change the date on the Ballagh 4. I don't see the Ferns 4 mile race on the AAI site, has it a permit. If you let me know I'll change it either way. Fair dues for explaining. In fairness it's not your fault re the similar races, you did consult with the local athletic club and did follow advice.

They are open to all, here is the link http://www.slaneyolympic.com/calendar/?event_id=96. If you are thinking the Ballagh one for next week then you may be out of luck as it as moved to the 13th.

It is important for AAI runners that an event has an AAI permit. Here is a link to the AAI application form.

    http://www.athleticsireland.ie/content/wp-content/uploads/2006/05/permit-application-forms.pdf

Point no 2 states 'AAI athletes may only compete in events which have been sanctioned by the Athletic Association of Ireland.'
