He has tried but he's stopped trying. He gets sleepless nights here and there and at one stage he went to his GP and got sleeping pills. He stopped taking them because they didn't help. I think he even saw a sleep specialist. I want him to go back to his GP again.

Well if he's stopped trying there's nobody that can help him only himself. What do you want his GP to do? A good GP will ask what his day routine is like, tell him to get up earlier and exercise and if that doesn't work they'd look into it further.

I don't know but maybe he'd listen to someone besides me.

Woohoo I just checked my bank account and the money from my tax refund has come in. Didn't really think it would come in in a Saturday, so excited now though! Time to get up and hit the shops, think I might buy myself an iPad if I can find somewhere with them in stock!

Jane unless he tries to correct it there's no way to know if it's more than lack of routine, but I bet it is. I usually DRAG myself out of bed at 9.30 to work at 10, this week I've been up at 7.30 every morning through necessity, what time did I wake up on my relatively quiet Saturday? 8am. Body clock has been reset, instead of getting up at 10 like I normally would on a quiet work Saturday and working til 2 or 3 I was up at 8.30 and am finished now, because my body knows this is a better plan!

My alarm goes off at 7am every day ... what time did I wake up at this morning? 06:59. And then I sat watching my phone so that I could turn off the alarm when it went off ... was planning what I'd wear to work today and everything ... eventually I copped on that it was Saturday!

Jane, instead of telling him you're worried about him, would you not try the "tough love" approach? Tell him that there's nothing attractive about a grown man who sleeps half the day when there's nothing physically wrong with him? He might respond to that a bit better, and try to do something about it ...

After months of waiting for my tax refund, and seeing my colleagues get anywhere between €250 and €1,000, I finally got my tax refund during the week ... €21.18. Sure it's better than nothing I guess.

In the past couple of days, I also got a random cheque for €40 from my old insurance broker (no idea why!), and I got a don't-sue-me cheque from a doctor I attended for €170 (he f*cked up), and I had some other random small amounts of money coming my way too!

    Noice.

Maybe. I don't know. He must be asleep now. I've texted him telling him I'm worried and there was no point in him telling me not to worry. I have half a mind to keep texting him until he replies because I'm fed up worrying. I know it's almost midday and I was asleep until almost 11 but it's beginning to get to me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,032 ✭✭✭Bubblefett

Feeling good today after a truely crappy week.
Done my nails, got a pretty skirt on and my hair is looking great (I've been reducing the amount I wash it).
Now I'm having 'googy eggs' and playing minecraft :D

Jane, when I became unemployed my sleep pattern went out the window for months. Now I force myself to get up at 9 every morning without fail (even make myself bring the dog for a walk first thing). It's really not easy and I'm like a demon until my 2nd coffee but it does wonders for me, especially my mood. It feels like I get the most from the day :)
Are you close with his parents at all? considering he lives at home it might not hurt mentioning his sleep pattern to them? That said, it all depends on how your boyfriends relationship is with them/how you think he'd take it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,401 ✭✭✭✭x Purple Pawprints x

See, he doesn't actually live with his parents. He lives in his Gran's house with his 2 uncles and he considers it home. I don't know if I could say it to his parents tbh though. I don't think he'd take it well even though his relationship with his parents is great.

Ah sure I can see how it would be so easy to get into those bad habits when you're unemployed.

But it's one of those things that, the longer it goes on, the more difficult it will be for him to get out of the habit.

Maybe this is getting a bit too personal, and obviously you're under no obligation to answer if it is! But, what does he do with his time? Does he have any other hobbies/interests, outside of meeting up with you? Is he actively jobseeking, or has he any interest in doing so? Or has he any interest in going back to education - maybe a FÁS course? Would he have any interest in doing a bit of voluntary work, like you're doing? Or one of those Job Bridge internships, maybe? Does he have any long-term plans, or does he intend to live the way he's living now indefinitely?

I do get that it must be difficult for him to get up and about if there's nothing to motivate him. But it's up to him to find things to fill up his days ... you can encourage him, but you can't do it for him!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,211 ✭✭✭Susie_Q

So he's approaching 30, lives with his gran, has no job and sleeps all day? I'd be giving him a serious kick up the arse to be honest. Does he have any plans for the future???

  • Posts: 0 CMod ✭✭✭✭ Luke Brief Speedometer

telling him "im worried" all the time is not going to get through
    tough love approach is

he DOES need a kick up the backside, it's not acceptable at all

Can we talk about someone else's boyfriend for a bit? Janes boyfriend bores me.

Or we could talk about my lack of one :p

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,729 ✭✭✭Acoshla

Funny, when I was unemployed I would happily wake at 10am and stay in bed til 2, watching tv, radio, etc. But it used to make me feel like such a loser when my boyfriend would come home for lunch at 1 and be like "...Still in bed then?" :o It was great having someone who I felt embarrassed in front of, I used to get out of bed when he did in the mornings then so I felt less like a student :)

When I was on summer holidays from secondary school my mom would be home for lunch every day at 12.30. So pretty much every day I got up at 12.25 and fabricated a productive morning :p

No he doesn't live with his gran, she died last year and he looked after her up until the end. I would apprectiate it if people wouldn't get so bitchy about things. Every time I post lately it seems to get that way so I don't know why I bother. I don't know what's changed but the atmostphere of the thread lately can be ridiculous. You only get snippets of what's going on. He's applied for jobs, courses, he helps his dad with window cleaning sometimes, he plays soccer 2 nights a week so it's not fair the way some people are talking about him. I'm taking another break because I feel like I can't post about what I need to post about without people being very quick to tell me that I'm always wrong. This is the third time at least that I've felt attacked on this thread and I'm fed up of it. If people are bored and annoyed by my posts then don't bloody read them.

you said you were worried because he does nothing but sleep all day so why would we think he does all that? and it's an ongoing problem because you're worried about it for ages

Well don't talk about mine. It's my Birthday and his present idea fell through at the last minute, so I didn't get so much as a card from either him or the child. I told him so many times that all I want is a card for these things. And if he wants to get presents for me that's grand too, but give me a card because I like them and keep them. But still, another birthday and no birthday card.
    Idiot.

That isn't what I said, I said I was worried because he sleeps too late sometimes and has trouble falling asleep at night time. Doesn't matter anyway. Just carry on with the thread. I'll think about coming back in the future.

Also, Jane, I would just like to point out ... I'm sure the other girls would agree that, if we didn't give a crap about you, we wouldn't bother posting.

But (even though I'm more of a lurker than a poster these days) you seem like such a lovely kind girl! You deserve the best, and I guess that those of us that read the thread regularly find it hard to see you putting up with some really unacceptable behaviour from your fella.

Now, I do know that you probably use this thread to vent a bit, and he probably has loads of amazing qualities that we're not aware of. But, he does seem to have some awfully bad habits. And you really should not have to put up with that.

Just remember that you're a great person, and he's incredibly lucky to have you. You shouldn't have to put up with the crap that he puts you through at times. And you should not be afraid to stand up to him at times! The more you let him away with, the lazier he'll get, you know? You just have to be tough with him, let him know when you're not happy.

And do keep in mind that anyone who responds to your posts here, they are doing so objectively, and with your best interests in mind. x

In fairness, in your many millions of posts about your boyfriend I don't recall one time where you ever mentioned him doing any of those things. You just talk about him sleeping a lot, even when he's in your parents house and you want to spend time with him - that's baffling and frankly it is disrespectful. We can only go on the info you give us, and to be honest it is usually either complaining or whinging. Sorry, just being frank here.

Do you have any friends you can talk to about your boyfriend worries? Its hard to know everything that's going on with your boyfriend, so people are just going by the info you give out in posts. You can't give out to people because you think the replies are being bítchy. I think most people are just offering friendly suggestions. If you don't like that then don't post about it on the internet.

FWIW, getting out and exercising can help hugely with mood, self esteem and sleep. Maybe go on walks together?

    Happy Birthday DasKitty!

I think that there is only so much one can take before it gets irritating. Jane constantly posts complaining about her boyfriends sleeping pattern, doesn't like what she hears and throws a strop, claiming she doesn't want to post anymore, and then comes back, posting about the exact same topic, rinse and repeat.

    1. If somebody sleeps all day, of course they are going to have trouble sleeping at night. Our bodies aren't made for sleeping around the clock.
    2. Nobody can change that, except the person thats doing it.
    3. A GP isn't going to fix it.
    4. Excuses never help lazy people. He sounds lazy. GPs don't have an anti-lazy injection.
    5. If going to bed at 11pm and getting up at 8am doesn't work, and he's still have trouble sleeping, then present yourself to the gp. He doesn't sound as if he actually has a problem sleeping, in fact he sounds quite good at it, just at different hours of the day.

I know this is going to come across as mean but to be fair, there is only so much whining and negetivity one can subject themselves to. Now where is this ignore button you speak of?

Okay - can we stop the bitching about/to/dissection of Jane please.

If you don't like what people are posting then skip over them - put the poster on ignore. There's just no need to be nasty about it.

Jane, this seems to be a re-occurring issue - perhaps posting in PI for advice in order to move the issue to some kind of resolution would be an option? Failing that, perhaps a private blog/diary is better suited if you just want to vent?

Either way - no more dictating of what posters can or cannot post in this thread please. If you have an issue, either report the post or PM one of the mods.

    Many thanks
