Scrolled down the page and was excited and confused when I saw a screenshot of Spiderman.

Turns out it's from a different game.

There's potential of a sort in an online Elder Scrolls, but I have to hope it strays from the typical MMORPG format, because honestly the genre holds very little appeal for me.

Is it going to be an Elder Scrolls MMO or an MMO based on Elder Scrolls lore?

Well the first thing I took from that is there will be 3 factions at war with each other, so immediately it differs from the typical two factions (good / bad) cookie cutter set-up of recent years which can only be a good thing.

Why is that I wonder? Didn't Planetside / Dark Age of Camelot etc. have 3 main factions back in the day?

I wonder if this will affect the single-player series?

Wow... Dull quests will be even duller, because they will have to be mmorpg friendly...

Seriuosly, they needed to go in to more detail in next game, not make it more bigger and duller...

Boo; I liked Elder Scrolls because it didn't feature other human players, not despite. My own little sandbox world, untouched by other douchebags from the internet. Seems like Bethesda are missing the appeal of Elder Scrolls in an attempt to jump on a bandwagon that continuously proves too costly for many companies.

This. As much as I am not a fan of series, I see where's it's apeal. It's a vast single player experience to those who love to discover stuff.
Mmorpg will take this and **** it out. So it will be one more generic mmorpg with elder scroll title, which will be popular for 1 month and then everyone will go to their original mmorpg.

This may need some explaining, and I fully stand by my favoritism towards single player games, but I'd be curious to see an online RPG that isn't an MMORPG in the traditional sense. One that isn't built upon grindy subquests or the same unappealing combat mechanics. The same size and length as a traditional RPG, but fully integrated multiplayer. I'd rather 50 well considered hours than 1,000 repetitive ones. Do away with the subscription fees: just give us a new, fresh online experience, and don't focus on keeping players paying their fees but instead making the best game they can. Perhaps a different take on the ideas presented in Dark Souls or Journey.

Dragon Quest X looks like a bit of a half-assed attempt at this (I'm guessing they'll do away with the fees for a Western release), but I'd love to see a rich vibrant world occupied by other people. Not just the WoW formula over and over.

Will wait for more details. I enjoyed WoW for a while and I'd quite like a good MMO that I didn't need to give up my job/missus/sleeping to get the most out of.

Shouldn't do, Zenimax Online is a completely seperate sister studio of BGS. The only thing likely to affect the ES series is if Fallout 4 is coming down the line :)

Hmmm a thought occurs - will this Elder Scrolls use GameBryo? :D It'd be nice to think this game might finally herald a change in engine for the series.

I agree. This is really disappointing, it will make them a ton a money and it will be really bad. So long Elder Scrolls, I enjoyed playing you, once.

No of course it won't use gamebryo, it is going to use an entirely new engine that will make you breakfast on Sunday morning and cure cancer.

See this is the announcement we should be getting.

They are using the HeroEngine, same one that SWTOR does. Apparently Zenimax had been working on an unnamed MMORPG since late 2007, Guess it finaly has a name.

The only reason that I am in any way happy about this is because me and my friends can finally settle all those "My character would kick your characters ass" arguments.

yeah but in SP RPG games your character becomes a god, in an mmorpg assume everyone elses does too? never actually played one and no intention off.

    MMOs can be fun.

But yes, take WoW: everyone and their wife is an epic hero or adventurer. It kinda dilutes the purpose of it.

    From GameInformer:

"Players will discover an entirely new chapter of Elder Scrolls history in this ambitious world, set a millennium before the events of Skyrim as the daedric prince Molag Bal tries to pull all of Tamriel into his demonic realm."

Daedric prince looking to drag the world into his own version of hell?? They've ran this story before I think. I just hope there are no Oblivion gates.

  • Registered Users Posts: 81,510 ✭✭✭✭Overheal

Im sure there will be, except that they wont be nearly as half assed as they were in oblivion.

Neverwinter Online is trying something like that, I think. Instead of being a whole free-roaming MMO world, you gather a group of adventurers (or go it along) and do instanced quests in the game world, and players are able to create their own content/storylines too. And it's free-to-play (which is always a bonus). So it could potentially add something new.

Or, it may just end up as a big pile of poo.

I'm willing to bet money that it will be another typical fantasy mmo, with hot bars and cooldowns and all. Basically, Warcraft with an Elder Scrolls skin. And with the god awful HeroEngine.

    No thanks.

    Seems some details leaked..

    http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2012-05-04-the-elder-scrolls-online-preview-leaked-detailed

The Elder Scrolls Online looks different and plays differently to a single-player Elder Scrolls game.

The graphics are stylised with a tint of cartoon, in a way reminiscent of Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning. The gameplay is Elder Scrolls squashed to fit a lag-conscious and balance-conscious MMO world - i.e. real-time combat is out, and classes, levels, hot bars and a third-person viewpoint are in.
Becoming a werewolf or a vampire is a no-no, as will be mastering all skills and becoming godlike in power. Player housing is out to begin with.
It's a different genre and a different developer - TES Online is being built by the 250-strong Zenimax Online team. Bethesda Game Studios, maker of single-player Elder Scrolls, collaborates "extensively" on lore and geography, but keeps its nose out of high-level design decisions.

Those are bossed by Matt Firor, who led development of Dark Age of Camelot - an MMO noted for its 'realm versus realm versus realm' open world player versus player combat. And the hallmarks of that game are here to see.
Gamers join one of three factions, each with three playable races. There's the north eastern Ebonheart Pact (nords, dark elves, argonians); the southerly Aldmeri Dominion (high elves, wood elves, khajiit); and the north westerly Daggerfall Covenant (bretons, redguards, orcs).

They'll clash in Tamriel's central province of Cyrodiil, a PVP middle-ground, where keeps and forts and mines and farms will fought over by as many as 100vs100 (vs100?) people - siege weaponry included. The ultimate goal is taking the Imperial City and crowning your faction's emperor - an automated process determined by the person who tops a sort of contribution leaderboard. Being emperor bestows little more than bragging rights, apparently. That faction will then attempt to hold the Imperial City.
There will be instanced PVP arenas as well.

Most of the world of Tamriel will be open to explore - Skyrim, Morrowind, Summerset Isle and Elsewyr were all mentioned - but regions such as Skyrim won't be as complete as in The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim. This allows room for expansion content.

Dungeons will be both instanced and non-instanced, enabling public exploration alongside other groups.

Stamina will be the central pillar of combat. It governs blocking, sprinting, interrupting and breaking free of incapacitating effects (roots, snares, stuns, etc.). All classes and weapon types will be able to block with varying success. And how you manage your stamina bar will be a key tactical consideration.

That mechanic aims to ruffle the healer/tank/damage MMO trinity, but those classes appear to generally be intact. There's no aggro table in The Elder Scrolls Online, which means an enemy is just as likely to attack you for picking your nose as it is the warrior smacking it in the face.

Groups will be made up of five players, and classes can combine abilities. A rogue may oil the ground and a mage ignite it. A mage may create a firestorm and a fighter spin within it, creating a cyclone.

Hot bars sound like they're small. The first two slots are weapon abilities, automatically assigned. The remaining handful are changeable class abilities. And the final slot is an ultimate skill unlocked by filling a finesse bar that rewards tactical, skilful play.

PVP will be a large part of the endgame, but there will also be multi-group raids, heroic versions of dungeons and high-end public dungeons.

The Fighters, Mages, Thieves and Dark Brotherhood guilds are all available to join. They're reputation-based factions that offer abilities and rewards for your hard work.

Phased questing, where the world alters for individual players as they finish a story-arc, will feature. Fetch and kill quests will be there, too.

Crafting will feature but it hasn't been detailed.
    Mounts haven't been detailed.
Stealth will feature but hasn't been completely figured out.
    Dragons are unlikely to appear.
Fast travel we be an option from wayshrines, but not from the map screen.
    There won't be pets, yet.
There won't be marriages to, or romances with, AI characters.
The Elder Scrolls Online will be fully voice acted.
    The loot system wasn't detailed.
There are screenshots in the leaked Game Informer reveal, but we'll only go so far here.

Recreating the freedom Elder Scrolls players expect within the World of Warcraft style mechanics Zenimax Online is using

I don't want Elder Scrolls lore in a WOW clone, It has been proven this approach does not work for MMO's.

This has got to be one of the more cynical game ideas to come out of the industry. Take a well loved, money-making game, get rid of everything but the lore and pop it into the standard MMORPG template.

It may end up an enjoyable romp, but I can't see myself even being arsed to sign up for the Beta.
