Has it ever happened in a game so far?

It'll be interesting to see if Hanrahan can follow Jackson's lead and force his way into the team.

Against Cardiff Madigan came on but didn't play 12 AFAIK. Would have been a good chance. They are rarely on the field together.

Madigan did play 13 in the HEC QF for a little over 10 minutes

    Hardly the same though.

Somewhere down the line Madigan will have to win Sexton's place or leave Leinster, you'd think the 10/12 thing would be at least tried.

Oddly enough, O'Gara used to be such a good passer he was quite good at bringing players in, anyhow, strange Horgan, who would know O'Gara well, would pick him out as a future coach.

He's still a good passer. But he is passing a lot further behind the gainline and he appears (to me anyway) to take a much longer wind up to his pass now.

He used to be excellent at long, quick passes to players near the gainline.

I would have said "Injuries and retirments at the Core of O'Callagahan's rise through the ranks" mightn't not sell to many newspapers though !!

Disappointing if true. That means it really was a career ending injury in essence, when the man was playing some of the best rugby of his career.

Disappointing but not surprising, hasn't looked right since he came back

Phenomenal player both for club and country down through the years

His style of ball carrying in his prime was a sight to behold, just pure strength

Wouldn't be surprised if he was feeding cattle during the ceremony

Love the story about the bull sitting in the tractor and seeing the phone ring about the Lions call up and thinking about not answering

Genuinely saddened about Wallace, one of the greats.

I agree, but he's had a great career and although it's a pity he missed the WC, I'd hope he has few regrets.

Best of luck to him, unfortunately injury curtailed him to few appearances.
It's definitely in his best interests to move on.

Time for JJ to step up.

I think he could end up following the Steenson route into the AP, a few seasons in Division one first etc.

Surely Leinster are due to produce another brilliant out-half any day now that we could nick? If it weren't for a very unlucky injury, they'd have 2 very talented young guys lining up behind Sexton already...

Why is it a bad situation?

I think it's a bad situation in that we can't promote from with in our own country. I'm genuinely puzzled as to why there aren't more Irish coaches knocking about.

What is known is that we do take a chance on foreign coaches sooner than we would on our own guys. I'm talking about Ireland teams in general and not just Munster here. Jono Gibbes and Jason Holland were appointed to positions with little to no experience. Mark Anscombe and Penny were appointed from the New Zealand ITM teams. The ITM while being a good standard is still a level or two below HEC/Rabo level (Borlase, Tokula, for example). The season is a hell of a lot shorter in that they only play 10 to 13 regular season games and only runs for three to four months.

Is there a summary anywhere of players out and players in so far for next season? So far it seems to be very heavily weighted towards the players out and unlike Soccer most of the business is done before the summer break. Any injuries next year and we'll be left scraping around the bargain basement of the Queensland Reds again to field a team.

Who can think of next season at a time like this? If anyone needs me I'll be gently sobbing while watching the highlights reel over and over again on youtube.

Have a look at this thread on m'fans. fairly good as to ins/outs
We have the biggest squad in the pro 12 but in some positions we are a bit light(centre, backrow)

Really high praise for Penney on newstalk. I'm trying to look forward, David Wallace probably wants us to stay positive.

This bit of this article about Penney jumped out at me:
Penney won a Super 12 title as assistant coach with the Crusaders before taking over feeder province Canterbury in 2006 and last season he led the province to their fourth ITM Cup title in succession, an achievement Adams equates to winning four Pro12 titles in a row.

"Yeah, I would say ITM is probably the equivalent of the Pro12, maybe a bit higher in terms of skill levels and Super Rugby is the equivalent of the Heineken Cup," he said.

All of the teams in the Pro12 play in this year's Heineken Cup, no? And three of the four semi-finalists and both the finalists are from the Pro12.

Odd comment. And it's not like it's the same the same teams playing in the ITM as play in the Super 15 either.

That's not from Penney, it's from a Adams, who works with the IRFU. Strange comment but he's better placed than most to make it.

Yeah, I knew it was Adams but as you say, he probably knows what he's talking about. Perhaps he's referring to the lower intensity in the Pro12?

We can dress it up however we like, it's not really a great league. It might have great teams in it but it often serves up dross.

It's hard to pinpoint why it's doing better in Europe than the AP and Top14.

Skill levels, on average, are definitely higher in the ITM Cup but there's no way there's a higher intensity. If people consider the S15 to be lacking in intensity on some levels, the ITM Cup is a significant step down again. I would think a solid Pro12 side would hold their own against a solid ITM Cup side.

The skill levels thing worries me though, it's quite possible Penney will never have worked with players with such incomplete skills with so much expected of them. That's not just a Munster thing, even players making it to Irish level don't have complete skill sets.
