What have you got your CPU running at, as a matter of interest?

Just 4.2gh I did not pushed any more. It worked stable on tide clocks so I left it like that.

    What was tea_bags 6990 score was? I can't remember.

This may be a thick question but can any monitor support 1080p? Is it the graphics card that sets the resolution like?

No, its the monitor, but the graphics card has to be up to par to support the resolution too.

    Nope.

Your monitor will have a maximum resolution (usually you want to run at this, unless you want a smaller resolution for a really intensive game) and can display anything under that. These can be set by your graphics card.

So if you have a 1080p monitor, it'll do:

    1920x1080, 1680x1050, 1280x1024, 1440x900, 1366x768, 1280x800, 1024x768, 800x600, 640x480, etc.

Where is that bigger anyway? He sorted out his pc if I recall correctly :). Something about troll pc. :) I really want t see how my gpu stacks up vs 6990 now. His is overclocked 6990, right?

sorry had exams today so avoided boards..

I'm getting about 95xx iirc. I'll check when I get home if I've time before work. I've a mild OC to 880, but if I get it under water I'll go closer to 1Ghz.

I am not sure of water will help. Can you get stable 1ghz on air? Its all about silicon lottery. If gpu can handle OC or no. Water is more preferable to keep noise down, as if you crank up fan speed high you will get same temperatures as water, but it will sound like airplane :D

maybe in a normal GPU, but the 6990 is very badly designed with coolers in mind. it throws air out both sides of the card, but its about 60% out the back and 40% inside, how that makes sense i dont know, but its a very definite wind out the back, and it only has 1 of the 6970's fans to cool 2x6970.

ive never done water before, but i doubt ill git 95*C on it, which is the only thing holding back more of an OC. im still at stock volts.

You won't get anywhere near. My 580 has never gone above 55°C, and that's overclocked.

6990 waterblock will be damn mutant I guess.

I am prety sure it's not cheap. How much will it cost you tu put it on water? Surely after seeing a qoute for water oolong on CPU only I am prety sure it will be not that far away. Won't you better off just selling 6990 add money you would spend on water cooling and take some 7870/7950 CF? I am prety sure it will be way more performance then oced 6990.

might be, but im going to avoid CF/SLI as my next upgrade. its not a driver issue (only game i had a problem with was F1 2011 on release), its just it leaves no room for upgrades down the line. i got lucky shifting my 6950's, and learnt my lesson for it. also, a single cooler card will be easy to fit into my water setup with upgrades down the line.

the GPU block im looking at retails for €150, but so far im the only bidder at £3. the listing ends tomorrow. if i get it for anything less than €100, ive got a bargain and will still be able to shift it down the line and break even.

my water adventure will set me back €450, but the only future changes ill ever need to make are new GPU/CPU blocks, and unless Haswell is something off the charts, my 2500K/3570K will last a long while yet.

Im hesitant about investing in this 6990, but for all intents and purposes, its more than enough for my needs. im playing BF3 on ultra 1440p with absolutely no drop in fps, who cares if BF4 comes out and i need to drop the AA a bit more? what more could you want?

im at the stage where (god forbid) i need to do any more performance upgrades on my PC. all i want now is something a little quieter :P

finally got my 7850 today and i have to say those thing are little champs when it comes to overclocking. :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,181 ✭✭✭Serephucus

You're at a good point really. If you can get the 6990 block for £10 or whatever it ends up being (bear in mind there might be reserve price) then it's basically free. And you're right, the only parts you'll have to upgrade down the line are the GPU blocks, and maybe the CPU blocks if the mounting holes don't align and XSPC doesn't release an adapter plate (they usually do; the Rasa started as a 775 block).

I was actually going to go with an EK block, for the sheer convenience of being black. any reason not to?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,181 ✭✭✭Serephucus

Oh, right. The Rasa is probably the better choice. I only stuck the HF in because the Rasa was out of stock, but there won't be a whole lot in the difference either way. The Rasa's also cheaper though, so maybe poke Specialtech and see when they'll have them back in stock or something.

Edit: Actually, screw that. Get a Raystorm instead. It's what I'll be (hopefully) upgrading to in a couple of months. It's the successor to the Rasa, but a little more expensive. It's only £2 more than the EK block you're looking at though.

I made it into the last 10 of a caption competition to win a ticket to the Insomnia 46 gaming festival.

    http://ukcs.net/iseries/insomnia-46-caption-competition-vote/

Mine is the first on the list so if people could vote for me that'd be swell.

Yes it's a terrible joke that doesn't make sense unless you know the people involved but who cares.

What keyboards do you guys/gals use? Thinking about getting a good one. Gonna pick up the G400 as a mouse and want something nice to go with it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,181 ✭✭✭Serephucus

I've been looking at a mechanical keyboard since my Logitech G11 kicked the bucket, but it's extremely hard to find a backlit one with UK layout keys.

If you think you might like one, or aren't sure what they are, have a read through this to get an idea. Having personally used red, blue, and black MX switches, I'm leaning towards blue or brown, but as I said above, can't find anything.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,924 ✭✭✭✭ShadowHearth

wasnt someone looking for mechanical one just a few weeks ago? i think they went corsair 60K? how did that go?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,181 ✭✭✭Serephucus

That was me. After having used MX blacks though, I don't think I want red switches (K90), and I can't find a single other UK layout backlit keyboard.

so you did got k60? so is it good?

Nope, haven't. I'm still using a Dell POS. Friend of mine has a Blackwidow (blue), and his brother has a Steelseries something (black). Another friend has a K60, and though it looks and feels wonderful, the switches are basically just lighter blacks (reds), and I no like.

I've got a Thermaltake Meka G1 (Blacks) and I adore it, spilled something on it yesterday and other than the space bar it still works perfectly (space bar is a bit stiff now)
