so what do people think of the eagles offseason so far its been quiet but we got some big names resigned and a settled offseason could be just what this team needs i think allen and coleman are underrated as safeties so in my opinion pick up a linebacker or 2 and combine that with other positions getting a chance to gel and where a serious Superbowl contender (just no talk of a dream team from any of the players please)

Big trade for DeMeco Ryans, hopefully he'll plug that massive hole in our roster (and middle of the field.) Interesting for the draft though, linebacker still the priority?

id take kutchy if he's there if not then best player available id imagine its going to be a dt or an og if theres no clear value pick

If Phily are going to run the wide 9 on D they have to get another quality line backer to plug that huge hole that cost then dearly against the running game last year. They seem to sacrifice a solid run stop in favor of (an admittidly very good) pass rush. I think that decision cost then big time last season... Watching Babin and Cole explode off the corner is always entertaining tho!!!

i agree donnelly but the eagles have always been slow to pay linebackers having said that i said the same about wide receivers and then they got djax and maclin so well just have to see i dont think we need it but i think they go dt

Lets just hope DJax steps up his game this season...no more jogging those deep routes!!! I really hope Jackson will continue to put in work over the middle and not let a few big hits put him off. Although I'd say hes still recovering from the hit by Dunta Robinson in 2010...that was like a car crash!!!
You could be onto something with the DT alright... I think DT and LB are the major areas that need a few new players. Anything to stop the run! O line might need a bit of work too I suppose but at least Vick can play around that a bit with his legs

i think we need depth in the o-line but im relatively happy with what we have at the moment.
djax is the big question i hope to god ready to give his all this year if not we have a lot of dead money invested in him if hes back to his best hes gona open up a lot of space for leshean by making the safteys stay wayyyyy deeper

No doubt when Jackson is on form hes the most dangerous man on the field, whoever is unlucky enough to get stuck covering him will have to stick to him like glue! Hopefully with his new contract he will stop whining and start playing again. Gotta see him dancing backwards into the endzone after an 80 yd play again! He can defiantly open the running game up too with pace like he has.

it would be nice to see i think the key is still the middle of the d we know the offense can do it

Looks like Asante might be traded away...shame he have the eagles 9 good years! Still it will let Nnamdi and DRC take over full time. And it will free up some salary cap for McCoy's big contact next year!

i really dont know what to think of this he is still our best playmaking cb but if we let him go drc and namdi can play man coverage and i know hes got a bug salary but that could be worth it alone for the look on elis face when he picks him 2-3 time a year

looks like a tackle in the draft we could spend it on a lot worse

With regards to asante, been a great performer, but the salary cap and depth at the position make it a necessary trade. I saw a mock draft predicting Kirkpatrick to come, would definitely not agree with that in the slightest.

Peters gone for probably the season. Bad news, but the one saving grace is the fact that Vick is a leftie, so his blind side isn't affected. As for drafting a linesman, maybe on the off chance reiff drops, but I can't see someone like Martin filling in too well.

kirkpatrick can play safety or he can be an inside cb so he could be worth a look if he drops
ya where very lucky with vicky being a lefty and i trust herrimans there still i dont trust king dunlap as a starter so we need another lineman def wouldnt mind one in the first round

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 566 ✭✭✭irish_man

Very unfortunate about Peters alright. I was thinking for pick 15 that the eagles could just select the best player available regardless of position. I don't, however, think they will draft a left tackle in the first round seeing that peters will be back in 2013. Hopefully they will sign a decent guy for the season and will keep Vick safe.

I'm really up for this season though. The Eagles have a great shot at a Superbowl this season. No major weaknesses in the the team on offence. With the MLB position sorted and the fact we nearly shutout the Cowboys in our last game has given me a little more confidence in the Defence. It's unfortunate that the NFC east is one of the most competitive in the NFL. Any team could win it really. I suppose the Redskins would be the weakest team. RGIII probably won't be a huge success in his first year. (Bit overhyped IMO) I really think the eagles will win the NFC championship and get a crack at the Superbowl. Either that or Andy Reid's head! :P

just saw a highlight vid for fletcher cox.
now i know anyone can look good in highlight vids but my god he looks awsome not so opposed to dt now.
also andy ried said hes going for best player available instead of need because hes missed some big players going for need over the last few years

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,509 ✭✭✭Donnelly117

Ive seen a few videos of him, surly a first rounder! Watch the FG block at 2.15 he absolutely runs over his man.

he looks class id like to see the eagles take him but they never pick who i think they do if they do get him who would you compare him to day one

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,509 ✭✭✭Donnelly117

Most of what I've seen from him has been against a limited number of different O-Lines, from what i have seen is that hes a lot better against the run...not much of a pass rusher to be honest. While hes explosive off the line he seems to get a bit stuck in the pocket. He doesn't seem to be able to get around a blocker once contact is made. Defiantly good vision tho, he reads the plays well. I could see him fitting in well in Philly because they need a run stopper not a pass rusher.

Just based on that video he needs significant work with his hands in order to disengage from blockers, has limited pass rushing moves (little beyond bull rush and even that needs work) and stands up too quickly on initial contact making it easier for the lineman. He's overreliant on his own strength and won't necessarily have that advantage at NFL level. I wouldn't take the field goal block as typical of his play

Just to add my two cents to the dicussion about Fletcher Cox. I picked for the Eagles there in our mock draft and when I was researching for the pick, he was the name that seemed to appear the most. Other, more knowledgable people than me reckoned that by the time the Eagles picked, he would be still there. However, that was assuming that certain other players would be already gone, Poe being one, and certainly Coples and Ingram so based with those guys still being around, I would've gone Poe, Coples, Cox and Ingram.

Besides, its unlikely that any of those guys would actually become a starter straight away as the Eagles aint that short?

i question poes motor hes a freak but didnt show the same speed/strenght on tape.
i still like kuchey if hes there as a sam lb.
how do people feel about mark barron havent seen much of him but seems like the only decent saftey in the draft

So Demetress (apparently his real first name) Bell has been brought in as a quick fix to Peters injury. A quick fix with a 5 year contract. King Dunlap isn't, and probably never will be, ready, and it looks like they're covering for the possibility that Peters won't recover.

So that means they can forget about drafting a tackle, which is great because I didn't really see a tackle besides Kalil and maybe reiff worth drafting first round. I have an inclination that the eagles will just go best player available, especially if there isn't any worth in the tackle position.

  • Registered Users Posts: 144 ✭✭bobo the clown

There is a roster bonus due next year for Bell so he could be released if he has a bad year.

LeSean should get an extension by the time the season comes. Derek Landri said he had a multi year offer from the eagles but that was changed to 1 year when Peters got injured. I cant remember what their cap situation is but I still think they might try to get Yeremiah Bell on a 1 or 2 year deal to give Jarrett, Allen and co veteran help.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,444 ✭✭✭frostie500

Yeah the Bell deal is for 5 years but realistically it has enough get out clauses that we can release him at the end of year one or year two without significant penalties

bell has potential but is injured a lot and i only realised when peters went down just how weak we are at tackle. i dont see anyone good enough being there at 15 unless we take decastro who looks like a beast and move watkins out to tackle(and remember watkins was only just drafted but hes old) but wouldnt be to comfortable with him there. id imagine well get a few "mud men" in the late rounds but other than that theres better value in other positions

Yeah that would be great but I doubt they would trade their pick to the Eagles. Both of those teams are more than likely going to have a losing record next year while the Eagles will, hopefully, contend for the superbowl next year. Not a hope in hell of that happening!

ya but there getting a 15 this year theres a lot of players the rams would like there they have 2 1st round standard guys to help them make a gud run this year on top of that they have 2 1st rounders after the redskins trade.

on our side it means we can do what we want in the draft next year (qb of the future anyone) or if Tannehills there i like him vicks gona go down at some stage thats just a fact and do we really think edwards is good enough i dont know a lot about kafka i thought he shoulda been in instead of young last year they have to see some1 they like in the draft somwhere

having looked back at my eagles picks for the last few years iv decided theres no point in trying to guess what the eagles will do because i wont even be close .

most unpredictable head office in the nfl?

Two years this off season since mcnabb was traded to the 'skins, so are the team better or worse without him the past two years ?

I wasn't bothered either way that we traded mcnabb as he had his chances to win the holy grail and didn't do the business. Now he would say he never had the receivers to help him, but he had responsibilty for not winning aswell.

I mean five NFC championship games and only winning one wasn't good enough.

That's not to say that kolb/Vick has worked out brilliant as as far as I know Lombardi is still missing from Philly.

I think that the future is still pretty bright in Philly. I'd take Vick over McNabb without hessitation now and if he can have time in the pocket, as he did two years ago, he can do serious damage. As it is our O-Line was shocking last year and really left him exposed. Add in Jackson not showing up and you had a recipe for disaster.

This year DeSean will be back on form and with Maclin on the outside and Celic at TE as well we have playmakers for Vick to get the ball to-never mind having McCoy at HB.

The defence needs to show up this year and I think with so much turnover last off season the lockout hurt us much more than most teams. By the end of the year we looked much better but it was too little too late.

I would say that in 2010 we were very close to knocking the Packers off in the Play offs and we would have been a tough team to beat the rest of that post season. We're making progress but after spending so big last year we all expected far more. Hopefully the pay off comes this season

weird draft this year the top 2 picks are guarantees but most other players are flying all over the place normally theres a consensus top 5 or 6 picks at this stage but after the vikings its unguessable

il be honest i freaked out when mcnabb was traded (not to the same extent as when dawkins was left go though) but we have come out of it much better however we fluked it kolb would have gotten destroyed behind our line 2 years ago if vick didnt turn out to be so good we where in trouble (and he came out of nowhere he was terrible the year before all be it only getting snaps here and there)

Top 6 seem to be fairly settled I think

    Luck
    RGIII
    Kalil
    Richardson
    Claiborne
    Blackmon

In that order seem to be what everyone is mocking now

So Asante is gone... traded for a 7th round pick... very bad deal I think. Fair enough they needed to get rid of him but he's a great player and was worth a lot more than that... pretty pissed off over it actually. Typical!

 is there no other team in the entire league that could have offered something better than a 7th round pick for a 4 time pro bowler...

    seriously like in all fairness

I see howie made another great move yesterday. A 7th for asante is a disgraceful result. If this what they are up the eve of the draft I wonder what will happen tonight at the draft ?

Don't really mind Asante leaving, late round pick was all we could get. We're pretty much sorted at CB with Nnamdi and DRC, aswell as Hanson. Add another CB through the draft, and we'll be much better off. It's sad to see him go, a great player, but we didn't need a player taking so much cap space over the age of 30 in a position we're comfortable with.

that seems harsh on howie asante was no use to us and everyone knew it a 7th is better than nothing and this is an upgrade for our defence (makes it easier on the safteys and we can play man coverage.

what other moves has he made that you disagree with so much

to be fair that was before he climbed into the top 10 this guy looks good the first time in years im happy with an eagles 1st round pick hes only 21 so still has room to grow but i think our d line is gona be one of the best if not the best in the league next year

Nice read here about your new guy Vinny Curry - he wouldn't let cameras into his home during the draft because he didn't want to have to take down all his Eagles memorabilia.
ometimes, coaches can exaggerate about players they've just drafted. But Andy Reid wasn't kidding when he said defensive end Vinny Curry "might be the biggest Eagles fan ever."

When the second-round pick from Neptune, N.J., met reporters Saturday, he displayed all the emotion, passion, sense of history and pride of the thousands he'll soon play in front of at the Linc. His eyes welled as he talked about meeting Brian Dawkins and Mike Vick. He name-checked Randall Cunningham and Troy Vincent, and insisted that it was Freddie Mitchell who originated the championship belt celebration. He said he wouldn't let cameras into his home on draft night because he didn't want to have to take down his Eagles gear.

"This is my last day, if I would have gone to a different team, being an Eagle fan, so I wouldn't take it down," he said.

Instead, the Brian Westbrook jersey and Eagles gloves and Eagles hats he wore as a kid can remain on the walls. And when he arrived for his first day at the NovaCare Complex, Curry stood in an auditorium as Dawkins retired. Among those on stage, and whom he would soon meet, were Vick, Donovan McNabb and Jeremiah Trotter.

"Most people, the draft is the best day of their life, but growing up an Eagle fan, being blessed with the opportunity of seeing Brian Dawkins retire and give a speech here, this has got to be the best day of my life here," Curry said, eyes gleaming under a flat-brimmed Eagles hat.

He spoke to reporters from the same stage where Dawkins had made his emotional exit hours earlier.

"To see his teammates come back, the way they embraced him, and the way they embraced me was really something special." Curry said. "It's a moment I'll never forget in my life."

Growing up in a Shore area town heavy with Giants fans, Curry couldn't afford Eagles tickets, but would rush home from Pop Warner games to watch on TV.

"The Eagle defense at one point in time was sickening, you know, with Troy Vincent, Bobby Taylor, Brian Dawkins right there, Trot, D-line had Big Hugh (Douglas), it was crazy and I just used to picture myself on Sundays - that's going to be me one day," Curry said. "To see everything come through and fall through like this is, it's so mind blowing."

Some thought Curry could go in the first round, but he slid late into the second.

"I was upset that I slid, but like I said, I slid into the greatest situation ever," he said. "It's like it's 100 degrees outside and I slid into the pool."

Curry's enthusiasm, awe and sense of history are rare for a professional athlete. Most players pour their hearts into their teams, but it is also a job and a career with a cold business side attached. A cut or trade or free agent move - and change in allegiance - is always just one front office phone call away. Even the greats spend only their 20's and maybe early 30's with one organization.

The biggest fans, on the other hand, go from childhood to college to marriage to parenthood to old age living with their team. They watch generations of players come and go. Each new season arrives with the context of the accumulated big wins, disappointing losses, stars and busts gone by. Those memories fuel the passionate reactions on Sunday afternoons and Monday mornings.

When it comes to the Eagles, Curry understands all that. He knows the history, knows the names. When the Eagles drafted cornerback Brandon Boykin Saturday, Curry, a smiling live wire, rushed into the media room to join on the conference call.

"I'm so happy for you, bro!" he gushed. He still sounded like a fan.

Earlier Curry met the Eagles who laid the foundation for the playoff runs he watched, including Trotter, McNabb and Dawkins.

"Welcome to the family," they told him. Then Curry met Vick. According to the rookie Vick told him, "you're not a fan no more, you're my teammate."

Curry was near tears as he retold the story.

Absolutely delighted with the draft this year. Cox will be a beast on one of the best d-lines in the league, kendricks will will bring explosiveness to the LB corps, and then Curry will just add to a fierce defence. Really love the boykin signing too, an absolute beast in the return game.

Not too sold on Foles at the minute, but I can at least see him as a QB with potential. Good value for where we got him I suppose. Really happy to get Polk as a free agent too, completely shocked by that. One of the highest rated RBs. Even if his injuries hold him back, still great value to take a risk
