He certainly would have instant respect from the players and from what I've read of his coaching of Counties, he seems to be well regarded. There was also some talk of Sonny Bill signing for them as his ITM team because of Umaga helping him to convert to union which would suggest that maybe he might be a good backs coach.

I think Sonny Bill has/had a problem in that most ITM Cup teams can't/couldn't afford him. I think the link to Counties was just paper talk to be honest as they were speculating on who he would sign with.

Saw that and mostly Id agree with him. It would take a new coach a couple of years to learn the ropes in Munster. For the Martin Johnson failures, there are lots of successes as well - Conor O'Shea with london irish, pat howard with leicester are two.

It may well just be, but it does show that umaga seems to be rated as a backs coach anyway in NZ to be linking sonny bill going to counties.

According to Lenihan on tv last night, Umaga applied for the job.

Does anyone know how much coaching Umaga has done with Counties? If I remember right he was playing for the Chiefs in last season's Super 15 comp!

I think Umaga would be a terrible appointment. He has done nothing in his career to suggest that he has the makings of a decent coach never mind the calibre that Munster require. Being kind, I would describe his coaching record with Toulon and Counties as unimpressive at best. To be honest, I'm surprised his name has even entered the frame. He has neither the experience nor the track record to suggest he'll be in any way successful. I'm not sure he would command instant respect from the players either due to his playing days. There will always be a little bit of ill feeling towards him in Ireland for the 2005 incident and his book several years later. Munster can do better and I don't think he'll be handed the role.

Sure why not hire all of them! Penny as head coach, Foley as forwards coach, and Umaga as backs coach.

He was player coach before going back to S15 last year. They announced him as head coach late last year though which makes his application for the Munster job a bit odd as the ITM Cup doesn't even commence until summer.

    We really do miss Warwick.

I said it at the time. We made a huge mistake letting him go. How did the Munster branch mess him around like that. Baffles me.

He was involved in 7 games of super rugby for the chiefs last year. He was a player / manager for Counties (played 10 games).

Its been done to death around here but there were many aspects to Warwick leaving Munster. In saying that he has been a massive loss though...

wasn't it to do with the irfu rule - 1 year contract if your over 30 for an overseas player?

I don't understand what can be achieved by that other than bringing in a younger version on 3 year contract making it even more difficult for young players to get gametime.

Although Munster weren't great shakes last night I think their backline looked a lot more dangerous than it has in previous weeks. Keatley actually brings something in attack and I think if Munster need to be starting him from here out. The team for next week will be a massive indicator on where Munster want to go.

He seems to be rated in New Zealand though - he is one of the names mentioned to replace Pat Lam for the Blues. (Joe Schmidt name has been mentioned as well but it seems he is none too popular there because he got rid of Carlos Spencer which is around the time that the Blues started going downhill).

Partly that, partly because his daughter has a medical condition and the best treatment options were in France.

Partly the pressure to find an IQ replacement for ROG.

On a scale of 1 - 10 how bitter are you at the current state of the Irish provinces? Must be pretty close to 10.

Odd comment from a guy who doesn't seem to like Munster, despite spending a fair bit of time discussing them. Would it be fair to say you'd struggle to list 7 things you love/admire/respect about Munster?

One thing I admire about Munster is their ability to without fail blame the referee every time they lose :D

There are two posters in particular who will work anti-Leinster rubbish into virtually everything they post (as highlighted by this discussion on the new Munster coach, what has that got to do with Leinster?). I don't do that with Munster. Not even close.

Leinster are very lucky to have you to protect them.

Can we please stop with the Leinster crap? Who bloody cares who said what? Leave it out like.

I expect Foley to be announced as the coach, all signs point to it. Good luck to him but tbh I'm disappointed if he is named but will support him 110%.

The Rabo run-in is really exciting but I'm worried about the Scarlets game. Our backs have been absolute crap for weeks, it was the front five and POM that won us the game against Glasgow. Normally I'd expect us to dominate Scarlets up front but we're missing a lot of grunt without the likes of Leamy and Coughlan.

Foley wouldn't be the best appointment but it could work out as long as he gets a strong backs coach to go with him. If it is Foley and Holland then I fail to see how they'll be any better then this year.

If Umaga was genuinely rated in NZ, he wouldn't have been assistant coach in a poor ITM Cup side after a coaching gig in the T14 and wouldn't be applying for jobs on the other side of the planet now. Him being mentioned in relation to the Blues job is lazy media speculation and not a lot more, I would think.

he wont be allowed pick his own staff id say... the fact that holland is still there when all they ever seem to do is crab from one side of the pitch to the other just shows how much of a joke it is.

J*sus f**king Christ. Do you ever miss a chance to turn every thread into a Munster v Leinster p*ssing contest? Why is Joe Schmidt popping up here? How is it relevant to Munster's new coach?

You are single-handedly wrecking every thread.

Any idea what sort of wages the Head Coach is on?

It has been shown on numerous other threads it easier just to ignore his/her posts. After wrecking the Ulster thread for 3-4 pages, he/her went onto the rest of the threads on the forum. As mentioned easier to ignore because all of his/her posts are pointless and mostly just plain trolling to get a rise from someone.....
