Shoes for squats and DLs

Anyone recommend some shoes for squating in and where to buy?

Currently using a flat pair of Bose runners I already owned as they were as flat as possible. They're starting to come apart.

Squat is only 160kg for reps so not exactly heavy but progressing steadily. Just want something good for long term.

Converse for squats, check eBay. I got a pair from China for €10 which are clearly fake.

    Deadlift in socks.

    Horses for courses IMO.

No reason you can't squat in cons, but a pair if oly shoes would be better. Adidas stuff is top notch. €100 investment and lasts for years. I got a pair of Adistars in 2006 for €200 and theyre still going strong. Best lifting related investment ever. Could realistically last a life time.

Cons for DLs or as an all purpose shoe. Or pull in socks.

Honestly any shoes with a flat thin sole or just a hard sole like converse will do. If you have spare $$$ then I'd probably invest in a pair of lifting shoes like Hanley said. Don't have a pair myself but I'd imagine they'd last a fúcking eternity if you were only wearing them in the gym for a few hours each week!

I've been tempted to invest in Adistars for a while now. My converse have served me for 3 years now though and have the added benefit of making me look hardcore :).

    THe new Adistar's are awesomely red/orange. I <3 them.

If you have the cash lying around, you will not regret it. I can't describe the feeling of rock solidness that occurs in a pair of adistars. You'll never want to squat any other way again.

I'm tempted to just get a pair of cons as I have a one 4 all voucher from the job I can use in lifestyle sports. Also I can try them on and make sure they fit.

I love my power perfects. Feels amazingly secure lifting in them. That said, I squatted up to 150 in cons before I had them. Still wouldn't ever squat heavy in cons again though, much prefer my PPs.

Do people actually wear weightlifting shoes weightlifting and squatting and if they feel like doing deadlifts they take their shoes off. I think that's a big mingin

Yes - Provided you're personal hygiene is good then whats the problem?

OP - I echo the adidas for squatting, socks for deads sentiment!

My personal hygiene is very good, doesn't mean I'd squat in my underpants.

I question the personal hygiene of every other gym user and the hygiene of the gym itself. Even the cleanest gyms are filthy.

I do but not in public places if I can avoid it. How many of your sock lifters know for a fact you don't have any fungal infection?

If you're squatting while free balling you need to be careful of chaffing.

I hope you're disinfecting your hands every time you touch the bar. And your phone if you touch that. Or your wallet. Or your locker key. And your water bottle.

Dude... it's not like you're putting the sock on your big lad and smashing one out afterwards. Most people take their socks off after being in the gym, wash themselves and put a fresh pair on.

I hope for your sake that your runners don't go in your gym back, because by your logic you've contaminated everything in your bag if you've done that. And probably your keyboard too now, and every surface in your house :D

No, most harmful bacteria doesn't have a massive shelf life on metal and plastic objects. However, I do wash my hands before and after the gym and I try not to touch 'myself' as bad as that sounds. I also wear gloves and tights and underarmour in the gym. But the gloves are harder to wash.

Next time you're in the gym having a shower try and get an impression of how many people actually wash their feet and balls properly. It's fairly well accepted that people wash themselves less thoroughly in communal showers, and they usually walk back to their cloths barefoot. Thankfully more and more people are wearing flipflops in shower.

Listen I am not trying to sound like an idiot with OCPD. I'm just saying I try and cut down the likelihood of getting a staph or fungal infection from the gym by exposing as little as my body to surfaces and washing myself and my cloths properly afterwards.

I know other people don't do the same because some people are filthy.

I generally like to levitate when I'm forced to train outside of my protective bubble... disinfecting the air under me is tough, but I cant risk catching the super aids

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,762 ✭✭✭jive

The chances of you getting a staph or fungal infection by walking (in shoes) where someone has squatted or deadlifted (in socks) are 0.

Also wearing flip flops in the shower doesn't mean anything. The water will just run off their foot into the communal shower anyway therefore spreading any harmful microbes that might be present on their foot.

As long as you're not walking around with open wounds rubbing off surfaces then I think you'll manage to go infection free my friend. Wash yourself properly and you're good to go.

well what do people wear when they're foam rolling? they are hardly stretching on mats in their wooden clogs? It's also smelly. ARe you denying your shoes are smelly now as well?

If you are worried about fungal infections, just throw foot powder on after you dry off.

My 6 year old Adistars which have never been washed and have been worn up to 3x per week don't smell.

Edit, I'm actually moderating my own post. A classy move I feel.

Anyway, can we get back on topic: Shoes for squatting and leave the hygene discussion there for now.
