If you like The Wire a lot of the same people are involved in Treme.

Set in post-Katrina New Orleans its about the various communities coping with the aftermath. Great performances , particularily John Goodman.

Lots of music, It also features guest appearances from Elvis Costello, Dr. John and other musicians from the area.

I'm a big fan of the Wire and Homicide: Life on the Street before that but I found Treme very slow. Just couldn't get into it at all

Edit - actually now that I mention it, Homicide was pretty good and worth a watch if you could get your hands on that box set

Another shout for Brotherhood here its meant to be very good, I have the boxset yet to watch.

Might as well throw in RTE's Love Hate, only watched the 2nd series but a great show, and a new series is in production!

It should be compulsory to watch "Six Feet Under", a criminally underseen show, barely ever see it mentioned here.

Sons of Anarchy is really good.. definetly one of the best :)

Breaking Bad peaks somewhere around the middle of season 2. I've always found season 1 to be a lot stronger than season 3 or 4. Season 4 in particular was absolute pap for the first 7 episodes.

Sure that's grand. Each to their own.

But think that it has so many fans that now it has become the cool thing to say "ive watched it and its only ok", regardless. Shoulder shrug, "I dont know what all the fuss was about"

Watched the first half of season 1 of breaking bad. I don't get the love.

    Sorry lads

Watch the second half and see if you still don't like it, fair enough, but it's a show that gets better as it goes on, and ep 6 & 7 of season 1 (the last two) are where it really starts to take off.

deadwood and the shield are two amazing shows

I enjoyed both. Also, Justified is excellent and well worth watching. Better writing and dialogue than The Shield. Nothing trumps Deadwood for dialogue in my opinion.

Sons of Anarchy is an absolute gem of a show, Seriously can't get over how it had a 12.30 AM slot on RTE.

Ok thanks all, so many suggestions and opinions there!! Gonna go with The Wire/The Shield as the 1st 2, like the sound of those. Breaking bad will be in 2nd lot!

Breaking Bad, The Sopranos and The Wire are overall the three best shows I have seen but 24 is without doubt the most addictive. Oz is incredible as well though, as is The Shield.

oh and OP don't think its been mentioned but "six feet under" is well worth a watch

    Agree totally with this.

Never gets a mention here, maybe because it's not about 'cool' criminals.

I finished the whole lot about a month ago and loved it all.

Really made me laugh, and it has the best ending of any TV show ever!

It's cool to say you like The Wire but it's kind of dull and none of the characters are interesting. You can't go wrong with Breaking Bad unless your mind is broken.

completley agree , ive had people leaning on me to watch the wire on dvd for years , im on eppisode 6 of series one and while its good , its not in the same league as the sopranos

sure its gritty and real as it gets but it has no charismatic charechter like the sopranos and unlike the sopranos , its not remotley funny

100% agreed. It is just cliche loaded for me, personally. It just is not a particularly interesting, well written programme, as unfashionable as that is to say. Some of the dialogue is atrocious quite frankly. The Corner (same setting, same subject matter, same writers) is one of the best programmes ever made, yet is not nearly as well known or rated.

If you like the Corner or the Wire, you should check out Homicide: Life on the Streets which was their original work.

i like bunk and i like the asian - african american female officer , mc nulty does nothing for me and neither does any of the low lifes bar the junkie informant

the sopranos is shakespearean in its study of human nature and the pursuit of power and status , i love tony a lot of the time but every so often i see him for the piece of crap he is , the man is irresistable , from a humour POV , even some of the other charechters in the sopranos like sil dont even have to say a word to have you cracking up , ditto uncle junior and his interactions with nice guy bobby , the only charechter in the sopranos who i dont like is anthony junior , their are any number of uninteresting and duff charechters in the wire

i can see why the wire is so sacred among trendys , it has that whole small scale , almost gonzo like , unglamorous , unsentimental , ubber cynical thing going on

All of the above are great, i'm watching Suits at the moment (they just finished season 2), and it is very good.

Easy to get in to and makes you want to keep watching the next episode
