I am too into my sports and have missed out on a lot of tv series. Gonna watch online/order boxsets of 1 of Breaking Bad/Wire or is there a better series to watch??

i thought breaking bad was quite crap.

I literall started watching series about 3 months ago. So far ive watched all of the wire and im just finishing the last series of the sopranos. The 2 of them are absolutely brilliant!! I would recommend watching start to finish.

I watched the first series of breaking bad between the wire and sopranos and found it fairly crap, but its gotten a few good reviews.

deadwood and the shield are two amazing shows

    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2056598062

deadwood here for 19 euro all 3 seasons

if you aren't put off by sci-fi, battlestar galactica was a quality show. it's nothing at all like star trek/wars or any of the cheesier sci fi series you'd see repeated in the afternoon on sky tv. a mature drama that just happens to take place on spaceships and have robots in it

The shield, breaking bad, southland, prison break. They are my favourites and got many pleasurable hours viewing from them. Didn't really get into the wire.

The Wire is the best tv show ever made, end of.

Breaking Bad is excellent as well, has to be watched. Go for both of them to start anyway

If you are big into sport check out 'Friday Night Lights'. Great American football show.
'Sopranos' is one of the best shows ever. You might also like 'Generation Kill'.
If I had to choose between The Wire and Breaking Bad I would definately choose The Wire.

I invested in the complete box set of Sopranos cannot stress enough how fantastic it is - have watched it fr start to finish THREE times in the last 4 years & will never part with it cos Im sure I'll watch it many times again - The depth of the characters & the quality of the acting are so top class the fact that you already know the storyline doesn't hinder the enjoyment! LOVE the Sopranos!!!

put it this way OP, the following series always crop up on these threads roughly in this order

    The Wire
    The Sopranos
    Band of Brothers
    Breaking Bad
    The Shield
    Mad Men
    Dexter
    Battlestar Galactaca
    Lost
    Deadwood
    True Blood
    Calicornication
    The West Wing
    24
    Entourage

    Basically anything made by HBO
new additions to the list would be the BBC series Sherlock and also Game of Thrones

Completely agree. I personally thought that the pilot was awful when I first saw it. I'd go as far as to say it gets noticeably better year on year.

In my opinion better than The Wire.

BSG is great. Well was great. Bad ending and some bad episodes.
    The Wire is great.
    Breaking bad -great!
Dexter series 1,2,3,4,5: Great, ok, bad, good, awful, kinda good but completely alien from the original concept.
    Lost is stupid.
Band of Brothers - great pilot, ok show otherwise
Californication is very good, except series five. You can't polish a turd.

    Stargate Atlantis :D

Breaking Bad is epic, just watch it..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 158 ✭✭Denise90

Have to agree, breaking bad is awesome. How do you feel about zombies? The walking dead was pretty epic too

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 735 ✭✭✭DundalkDuffman

I thought The Shield was superb which is probably why I'd recommend 'Justified' due to Walton Goggins being in it!
On your original two, I blitzed the Breaking Bad first series in about 3 sittings and would recommentd to stick with it. The Wire is very good but I reckon it gets way too much hype from people. Worth watching yes, greatest ever, no!
    Horses for courses :)

Also a shout out for Sons of Anarchy, gripping stuff. Also watch Southland and Dexter both are worthwhile. I'll check out Deadwood seeing as it's in several of the posts here, wouldn't like to think I'm missing something!

It's cool to say you like The Wire but it's kind of dull and none of the characters are interesting. You can't go wrong with Breaking Bad unless your mind is broken.

There is so much wrong with this statement that I don't know where to begin.

+ 1 for Sons of Anarchy

Also Justified and Brotherhood are great shows

Just watched the first two episodes of BB. Nothing to write home about so far. Please tell me it gets better!

Mind you , I remember the exact same thing with the Wire and that turned out to be the best series of all time.

I LOVE breaking bad, but i tell everyone the same thing is to get through the first few episodes as it starts off slow but it genuinely becomes better and better as the seasons go on. Easily the best show i an watching that is currently on the air.

I can't stand "cop shows" or more specifically the story of the week format that you get in the likes of CSI, Lie to me and Castle. That is why i avoided the wire for so many years but i'm watching it on sky Atlantic at the moment and i absolutely love it.

I'd definitely go with breaking bad first.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,096 ✭✭✭xalot

Definitely Breaking Bad First, then maybe the shield. I love the Wire but it does take a while to get into.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,397 ✭✭✭Paparazzo

My top 3 shows in order are:
    The Wire
    The Sopranos
    Entourage.

The wire is great, takes about 3 or 4 episodes to get into. I think the sopranos is almost addictive straight away. Entourage is more light hearted, but a great show.
For me, those 3 shows that make you feel disappointed when you're finished watching them cos there's no more to watch.

This. Anything off this list. Throw in Generation Kill, but it's only a mini series.

If you like The Wire a lot of the same people are involved in Treme.

Set in post-Katrina New Orleans its about the various communities coping with the aftermath. Great performances , particularily John Goodman.

Lots of music, It also features guest appearances from Elvis Costello, Dr. John and other musicians from the area.

The Wire > Breaking Bad. Honestly though, watch both. ;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,081 ✭✭✭ziedth

Entourage is also a good shout. The last season is awful but the first 6 are brilliant and the 7th is watchable, it's a real pity how it finished.

It has its flaws but I also really liked Jericho.

I'm a big fan of the Wire and Homicide: Life on the Street before that but I found Treme very slow. Just couldn't get into it at all

Edit - actually now that I mention it, Homicide was pretty good and worth a watch if you could get your hands on that box set

Another shout for Brotherhood here its meant to be very good, I have the boxset yet to watch.

Might as well throw in RTE's Love Hate, only watched the 2nd series but a great show, and a new series is in production!

It should be compulsory to watch "Six Feet Under", a criminally underseen show, barely ever see it mentioned here.

Sons of Anarchy is really good.. definetly one of the best :)

Breaking Bad peaks somewhere around the middle of season 2. I've always found season 1 to be a lot stronger than season 3 or 4. Season 4 in particular was absolute pap for the first 7 episodes.

Sure that's grand. Each to their own.

But think that it has so many fans that now it has become the cool thing to say "ive watched it and its only ok", regardless. Shoulder shrug, "I dont know what all the fuss was about"

    Sorry lads

Watch the second half and see if you still don't like it, fair enough, but it's a show that gets better as it goes on, and ep 6 & 7 of season 1 (the last two) are where it really starts to take off.

deadwood and the shield are two amazing shows

I enjoyed both. Also, Justified is excellent and well worth watching. Better writing and dialogue than The Shield. Nothing trumps Deadwood for dialogue in my opinion.

Breaking Bad, The Sopranos and The Wire are overall the three best shows I have seen but 24 is without doubt the most addictive. Oz is incredible as well though, as is The Shield.
