A great ambassador for Ireland down under, terrific athlete, and always came across as a very nice and down to earth guy. He seemed to have a very positive outlook on life, despite his ilness.

My sympathy to this family and friends.

    RIP Jim.

I'm saddened to hear the news of Jim's passing. My thoughts are with his friends and family at this.

He was a fine example of a sportsman and gentleman.

    RIP

That's some really bad news, he fought hard and gave a lot of people hope.

    R.I.P Jim.

It only seems like yesterday that he was galloping around on the Dublin minor football team. RIP Jim, God's blessings on you and on your family. They seem to be organising a state funeral for him in Oz. A guy who made a huge positive impression on all he encountered.

He always seemed like a decent bloke.I knew he'd been unwell but have only just heard of his death.

    Sad news

I never realised how big he was out here until I visited the MCG and they had a room named after him. Only about 10 others get that honour and they are all Australian.

This will bring a tear to a glass eye..

    R.I.P. young man.

If anyone can find the documentary online will you stick it up here? It's not on RTE player unfortunately. Alternatively if RTE do show it over the next few days I'd advise anyone who hasn't seen it to give it a watch. Powerful stuff.

You get an idea of how highly regarded he was the world over when Lance Armstrong is tweeting about his death.

    RIP

RIP Jim. Having lived in Melbourne recently, it is really is hard to describe the esteem in which this guy was held among all ozzies, but especially in Melbourne. The whole of Melbourne would have gladly followed this man into battle, and I think in a way they did. RIP Jimmy Stynes. Legend.

I don't remember ever hearing about Jim Stynes before. Mind you, he left Ireland to start his career in AFL in 1984, so it's hardly surprising that he didn't have such a massive profile in Ireland.

I'm absolutely astonished at the Aussie response to his death.

Clearly he was a legend and very highly regarded. The Age newspaper in Melbourne dedicated their whole front page to him, and even had a 10-page special supplement. The premier of Victoria offered a state funeral, and the Stynes family accepted.

I can't recall having seen the likes of it in Ireland, except for a major political figure.
