I heard an hour ago via a buddy in London who'd heard from a buddy in Melbourne. Just rang another buddy in Cleveland Ohio to break the news. We knew Jim from growing up in Rathfarnham as he lived fairly near to me. Also played football with him with Ballyboden St Endas as a kid. A thorough 24 carat gentleman. Desparate sad for his family. Terrible to see a guy go at a similar age to you. Time to go upstairs and hug the wife and kids and tell them I love them. Presume there'll be a service in the Church of the Holy Spirit in Ballyroan. One of Irelands sporting greats. Moved half way across the globe at 18 to take up a new sport, ended up winning a Brownlow (footballer of the year) as well as setting a record of 244 consecutive matches (having played through various injuries)

His dignity and bravery when dealing with illness were an inspiration, and he will be greatly missed both here and in his adopted homeland

    RIP Jim

A great ambassador for Ireland down under, terrific athlete, and always came across as a very nice and down to earth guy. He seemed to have a very positive outlook on life, despite his ilness.

My sympathy to this family and friends.

It only seems like yesterday that he was galloping around on the Dublin minor football team. RIP Jim, God's blessings on you and on your family. They seem to be organising a state funeral for him in Oz. A guy who made a huge positive impression on all he encountered.

    Sad news

I never realised how big he was out here until I visited the MCG and they had a room named after him. Only about 10 others get that honour and they are all Australian.

If anyone can find the documentary online will you stick it up here? It's not on RTE player unfortunately. Alternatively if RTE do show it over the next few days I'd advise anyone who hasn't seen it to give it a watch. Powerful stuff.

You get an idea of how highly regarded he was the world over when Lance Armstrong is tweeting about his death.

    RIP

RIP Jim. Having lived in Melbourne recently, it is really is hard to describe the esteem in which this guy was held among all ozzies, but especially in Melbourne. The whole of Melbourne would have gladly followed this man into battle, and I think in a way they did. RIP Jimmy Stynes. Legend.
