Do you think the Chinese could take over the world if they wanted to?

Nah, they would just build a big wall around it to keep out the space mongolians.

    They already have;)

Since the Great Wall was discontinuous, Mongol invaders had no trouble breaching the wall by going around it, so the wall proved unsuccessful and was eventually abandoned :D

No they would be bounced into the stoneage, but no-one would beat them, it is definitely a war that would not be over by Christmas.

    It wont happen though.

I hope China follows its own path and does not get caught up in the west's financial system otherwise bust will surely follow and if a billion people start getting pissed off and fighting amongst each other then it will cause severe instability around the globe.

You are talking about NOW. Look ahead, 20, 50, 100 years. What's a century to an ancient culture like China? Besides, for all we know the Chinese may be working as we speak on a missile or some other weapon that could, in an instant, render nuclear-powered carriers just as obsolete as carrier-based air power made battleships - which had been the cat's pyjamas in naval warfare up to then - became when the Pearl Harbor attack took place.:)

Anyway, some Chinese have told me they're not really into swallowing up other countries. "You only feel hungry again an hour or so later," one of them said to me.:rolleyes:

Well I'd argue the point about battleships...IN any case it's highly unlikely the Chinese are working on such a weapon, though they may well be working on an IT based weapon that would screw with other weapon systems and economies. The Russians and the Israelis are rumoured to be and they're well ahead it seems.

Yes the Chinese are an ancient culture, with some serious innovations and sublime works of beauty in their history. However they're also the culture that damn near invented the word stagnation in between those periods of innovation. They have a two thousand year history of bursts of growth/innovation followed by looooong periods of stagnation, centralisation and rigid social structures. This is a culture whose long list of invention would shame any other culture, yet when the western nations made more contact in the 19th century they found a culture that was to all intents and purposes medieval.

Their biggest problem and one that seems to be left out of most commentators observations is a demographic one. Demographics get you every time*. This amazing economic growth of theirs has run in tandem with a big upswing in the population and availability of young workers. That spring is running out as we speak. By 2020 their stock of same will have halved. BY 2040 it will be worse again if they don't start getting jiggy now.:) Half of all primary schools in China closed in the last 5 years because there weren't enough new pupils. There are similar downward trends in university applications. Oh and this is countrywide, so the usual answer of "oh well they've a huge population in the countryside to make up the numbers" doesn't work. This will fcuk them badly. The ones left will see their value and their price will go up which will only add to it.

While China is growing its rate of growth has slowed(naturally. This always happens) and they may well have a very rocky road ahead. I remember the time when the "japanese are taking over the world!!" and... oh yea... People dig the headlines, but don't dig beneath them. I find it particularly interesting that Irish people buy into this Chinese miracle at face value. Especially given our own bubble. Then again try telling people 5 years ago this wasn't sustainable. I and others did, on this forum too IIRC and were derided.

I watched a programme on the BBC there last week about a Chinese village in the sticks that was transformed into a small city in a decade. Dunno if ye saw it, but it was interesting and had a few parallels with here in the boom. They built this city(on rock and roll..) and all looked shiny and new and all that. New shops and businesses all over the place. Then you looked at what these shops were actually selling. Building supplies. Tile shops, bathroom shops, sofa and furnishing shops etc. Businesses were noticably aimed at the same market. Landlords, property developers, builders. This new city had just one factory actually producing stuff. Not terribly sustainable. Sound familiar? 6 years ago you couldn't move in Dublin without falling into some new tile emporium or other selling italian marble columns to style blind suburbanites in their semi dees. Other than the gag inducing tackiness of it all the daftness was clear to be seen. That kinda thing is to be seen all over China. We ended up building ghost estates, they look to be building ghost cities. Yes they're different and those differences are large, however patterns tend to repeat in nature, so don't fall into the all too common mindset of "this time it's different, you know" and don't always believe the hype.

*demographics was a big driver in our own "boom". Watch Ireland have another upswing in 15-20 years on the back of another demographic wave.

In fairness Wibbs you could've said the same about America.

I do agree though about the demographics. America can still expect population growth.

They are already taking over the world. Without China everything stops.

China has a problem -- its population does not match its resources and gross domestic product. China's more than 1.3 billion people don't have the resources to adequately care for themselves [source: University Nebraska at Omaha]. This has led China to begin exporting its people, in a sense, by setting up shop in other parts of the world. Look no further than Africa, where China has rapidly developed its presence during the last decade, in countries like Nigeria and Angola, among others. During that time, more than 750,000 Chinese have moved to Africa [source: Malone]. Some experts contend that the plan is to increase this number to the hundreds of millions, helping to put a dent into China's natural resource problem by tapping into Africa's resources, while thinning the herd in the home country [source: Malone]. Air and sea routes are increasing between China and African nations as massive deals are made for commodities, trade, labor and military cooperation. Chinese private schools, embassies and cultural centers are popping up in places like Rwanda, Nairobi and Angola. Angola even has its own "Chinatown" district.

In return, countries in Africa get a willing trade partner and assistance and weaponry for its military factions. Africa also receives the supposed benefit of jobs and infrastructure building. While trade has increased from 5 million Yuan to 6 billion in the last 10 years, many contend that Africa is getting the short end of the stick, importing cheap Chinese toys and goods, while exporting valuable commodities like oil and timber. It's estimated that 70 percent of African timber ends up in Chinese ports, a figure that hints at massive deforestation [source: Malone]. There are also assertions that Chinese mining operations in Africa are staffed with African laborers earning less than one Yuan per day, which is about 14 cents [source: Malone]. The weapons sent to Africa often supply arms that help to fuel the continent's many civil wars. And in some parts of Africa, Chinese-only communities have gates, and blacks are not allowed to enter.

Similarly, China has reached out to Latin America as well, bypassing the United States as Brazil's No. 1 trading partner, and coming in second to the United States in Argentina, Costa Rica, Chile, Peru and Venezuela. With this kind of reach, and a population at well over a billion people, it's no wonder that a large percentage of the global financial news focuses on China.

Nope just like in take aways, the Indians would match them.

Not really, just compare the last Commonwealth Games to the Olympic Games and you'll see why.

    From the Sunday Times:
CHINESE spies hacked into computers belonging to BAE Systems, Britain’s biggest defence company, to steal details about the design, performance and electronic systems of the West’s latest fighter jet, senior security figures have disclosed.

The Chinese have exploited vulnerabilities in BAE’s computer defences to steal vast amounts of data on the 239.25€ billion F-35 Joint Strike Fighter (JSF), a multinational project to create a plane that will give the West air supremacy for years to come, according to the sources. The attack has prompted fears that the jet’s radar capabilities could have been compromised.

Apparently (stated in the long article) they'd cracked the servers as much as five years ago and have been collecting data ever since!
(BIG embarrassment for the British government)

Can they take over the world?
Possible - it looks like they are certainly trying by various new methods.
Who needs guns and weapons when you have spying and financial methods instead!

Not really S. Americas agricultural and industrial growth in the 19th century kept pace pretty closely with it's population growth. And it kept growing both internally and with all the immigrant populations feeding it. America was/is a very different model as an example of an emergent economy power.

Nope... If they tried it would sooner or later come down to atomic warfare and then there would be pretty much no world left worth taking over.

Its an unpredictable place, when they do revolution they really do it big time 40 million died in the last one 20 in the one before and 35 in the one before that one and they have them very often those 3 were in the last 150 years.

It ripping apart with corruption and that is what usually sets them off, but the high economic growth rates keeps a cap on discontent, BUT that can't last forever, or could it,,shudder,,
