We have a TV for the playstation that we got about two weeks ago and that's it. There is an old connection for UPC for analog but we never checked if it works. sometimes old rented houses could have connections like that working. Our situation is a little strange. my mate answered the door and was on the phone to me at the same time and the tv guy there just asked for his name and said he'd send him out something and when I asked him what yer man said afterwards he didn't know and said he didn't even ask us about having a tv just for his name.

I'm not getting fined for having a tv for playing the playstation. Should I check if the upc connection works and if so could we be caught for it? Actually my mate was playing pro ev now that i think of it and the music from the menu must have been blaring in the background as it always is the guy must have presumed we had a tv with channels.

I think you have the wrong end of the stick. He isn't concerned about whether or not your upc connection is active or if you might be playing pro evo and he has mistakenly thought you might have 'a tv with channels'.

You have a television, and that is enough as far as they are concerned.

My advice is to tell them you are from Barbados and ignore them till they go away.

its a pity RTE wasn't listed on the state's assets for sale list. then we could finally scrap pat kenny's allowance fund
No way will that happen because it is the main outlet for politicians to spout their bullsh1t to the public. Nice money earner too with little effort.

    Ah nevermind the technicalities!

For an extra 50 euro I will scratch off my name with a stanley blade and type your one over it. Its really easy. Hey you wouldnt be interested in few of driving licences would you? 3 provisionals and a full one. You will have to provide your own pictures though.

    do you work for rte?

I've lived in Dublin 10 years and never had a tv licence...
just don't answer the door to people you don't know, this covers you for salesmen, religious and charity workers. Happy days

Oh just to add i'm not a hypocrite as RTE stations are not even tuned in, no interest in that ****.
god no,i dont work for rte, but if someone has already given their name they need to avoid getting a summons. i don't generally answer the door to strangers either. i was simply telling jackthelad321 what the law regarding the tv licence is. ie, answering his question.

Tell them your name is Jessica Fletcher. 160 f*cking Euro for watching Murder She F*cking Wrote re-runs, they should rename the licence the Jessica Fletcher licence. Cheap dirty scum bags.

the point is jack the lad already gave them his real name. what should he do now in your opinion? obviously he shouldn't have opened the door or given them his name!

I had to go to court many years ago for not having a TV licence.
At the time I think if you took out a subscription to Sky or NTL (i think it used to be) they were obliged to tell An post.
Anyway, they must have been doing our area at the time because the court on that day was full of our neighbours.:D
I felt like a school kid in front of the judge,
asking me why I didn't have a license, it was the law, blah blah.
Anyway, got one, still have one.
No fine from the courts but they do prosecute if they have your name.

    Well I'm still escaping.
I meant to go in last Friday to get one but I was called into work at the last minute. So hopefully I'll get in this Friday.

unfortunately unless you keep escaping until the start of next month they back date it to the start of the month anyway :( and if you get one in the same name as the last one if you've opted for a new license as opposed to a renewed license they will back date it at the end of the year

Last time the man knocked at my door i brought out a dog licence, and i don't even have a dog.
Turned out it was the milkman looking to be paid lol

Are there any figiures for how many people have licences and how many are avoiding it?

It seems from a quick poll of my friends that the majority of people in rented accommodation don't actually pay the TV licence. Is this true of therest of the population, or are my friends all anarchist wastrels?

Odd - I never noticed before but my TV doesn't actually have wheels, a gearstick, brakes nor is it a mechanically propelled vehicle

When you have to get one make sure you put it in an imaginary name
All future correspondence regarding licences will go to Rupert T. Bear or Mary Murphy
You're in the clear for years :)

And when they find that Rupert T. Bear or Mary Murphy hasn't renewed the licence next year, they'll come knocking to see why. The onus is on everyone at the address, not just fictional characters, to ensure the TV has a licence. Just make sure you're not the one answering the door.

    Does your tv bark?
Like that stupid ad they had years ago if you drove your tv you would need a licence if your tv barked you would need a licence.
But my tv doesn't do any of those things so why the fcuk do I need a licence?

OP just pay and be done with it. You're fooling no-one but yourself otherwise.

Why do people in this country expect to have everything handed to them for free? It's absloutly non-sensical. If you want a service you pay for it, simple as that.

Why the fcuk would anyone pay to line the pockets of Joe Duffy, Pat Kenny and watch the likes of Brendan O'Connor and Fair City? Because that's where the money is going...

I have never paid, and I never will. If RTE provided a service 1/5 of what BBC is then I might consider it.

I'd sooner pay double the household charge!

I don't want the service. Yet I'm expected to pay. In fact if you have sky you're paying twice.

Who pays twice for a service they don't even want?

    Answer: not me.

I'd love to see RTE become an opt in service. Fair enough anybody wanting to watch RTE could choose to pay a license fee and anyone who didn't wouldn't be hit with the fee.
