Has the child been diagnosed as HIV+? It would be highly unlikely that they could contract the virus from ingesting blood, although the risk would increase if they had oral sores or ulcers. That's not excusing what she did - its a despicable thing to do to a child entrusted in your care and largely unforgivable.

If its any consolation HIV is a very weak virus and there is little chance the kids would get it this way, but probably not impossible. Lets hope.

Some sources say she got a 12 month sentence with two months suspends as long as she doesn't commit a similar crime in the next 3 years.

It also says that what she was doing was only discovered on the 13th of February and the case happened 11 days after. The court system works fast in Zimbabwe!

In fact so must the lab technicians because it seems very fast for it to be established that her blood was in the porridge, that it was menstrual blood as opposed to regular blood and that it was HIV+. When was this confirmed?

I don't know much about CSI Masvingo but 11 days from finding your child eating something suspicious to a conviction of the maid for putting her own, particular type of blood, infected with a particular disease sounds rather fantastical.

That kind of speed would be fairly typical in Zimbabwe. They probably checked the blood type and using that and the fact that the maid's blood and the blood on the porridge were both red, they decided she was guilty. Menstrual fluid of course isn't just blood, but you would still need a DNA comparison to determine who owns the blood.

DNA comparisons take weeks. Unless you're a wealthy Zimbabwean, in which case they take hours if you slip the police chief a few trillion dollars.

actually thats how HIV spread from monkeys to humans.

basically SIV originated in monkeys which later spread to chimps (as chimps are known to kill and eat monkeys) and became HIV and the starvin marvins in africa killed and ate these chimps not knowing they carried HIV.... it then spread from the now infected chimp poachers to the rest of human population in the villages via sex, the rest is history as they say it.

Ok yes it's disgusting and weird to do. But 10 years in prison? What is that going to do. She's obviously a bit mental and needs some help.
Perhaps she won't do it again in 10 years time but I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

You do realise that article is nearly a decade old and some of the information in it has since been disproved, right? HIV-1 is now most commonly accepted to have come from particular gorilla and chimp tribes in certain parts of Africa and to have been transmitted through simian to human bites or from a situation where someone was butchering infected meat and cut themselves.

HIV can be acquired through the gastrointestinal tract but not commonly. The odds are the child did not contract the disease though it is still too early to know for sure. It may also be possible, seeing as how she appears to have come from a reasonably wealthy family, that she was treated with antiretrovirals.
