HIV+ maid laces kids porridge with menstrual blood

MASVINGO A 17-year-old HIV positive maid from Mupandawana, Gutu, laced the porridge of her employers four-year-old child with menstrual blood cruelty that earned her a 10-year prison term yesterday.
She will effectively serve eight years as two years were suspended on condition of good behaviour.
Pelagia Mureya, originally from Choto Village in Chief Magonde area in Chinhoyi, carried out the disgusting act several times until luck ran out for her when one day her employer, from Gonville suburb, last week noticed a drop of blood when her child was eating porridge and investigated.

The maid professed ignorance of the blood but her inquisitive employer took the porridge, her child and the maid to Gutu Rural Hospital where tests confirmed it was Mureyas menstrual blood. The toddlers mother immediately pressed charges against her, leading to her arrest.

She's a 17-year-old maid in Zimbabwe. I'd be surprised if she can write her own name, let alone understand the mechanics of blood-borne pathogenic disease transmission (I couldn't think of a less intellectual way of saying that). One in five people in her age group are HIV positive, so she probably considers it some kind of curse rather than the serious life-threatening illness that it actually is.

In any case, the odds of such an act resulting in HIV infection would be very very small. Most likely she did it in an attempt to get revenge on her employer, ignorant to the possible outcome.

Doesn't excuse it, but I would be very slow to call it attempted murder or anything like that.
