It had to happen - it's being going in that direction for a long time now. Another Californian community, Calabasas, already bans smoking in public areas outdoors.

They might as well go the whole hog and make smoking illegal in their municipality. That's what the health Nazis really want. First they come for the smokers, next the fatties, and so on and so on...

Nanny state at its worst.

Don't think it's right prohibiting a perfectly legal practice on someones private property.

Also, surely smoking indoors could be damaging to the health of the people you may live with?

Though I had been making an effort to cut down I've recently thrown caution to the wind and continued to smoke as I see fit. Where I'm legally allowed to and I try to smoke away from children but good god if I couldn't smoke at home I'd go slowly nuts.
Not all smokers are cancerous unhealthy societal leaches as the media would lead you to believe!

A town in California is proposing to ban smoking outside, even for residents lighting up on their own property.

Smoking is already banned indoors in public places in most of the country, and in California it is illegal to smoke in parks and playgrounds too.

The town of Rocklin, near Sacramento, could take the draconian regulations further by extending them to private property as well.

The unusual legislation was prompted by a local family annoyed with their neighbour smoking outside and causing smoke to waft near their house.

They claimed their children's health had been jeopardised by second-hand smoke, according to CBS 13.

However, while cigarettes may be considered a dirty habit, some people say that a ban could interfere with constitutional property rights.

And other worry that the proposal could actually cause health problems, with smokers forced to light up within the confines of their home - particularly damaging for those with young children.

But supporters of the plan say a blanket ban is the only way to keep cigarette smoke away from non-smokers.

Rocklin resident Ryan Malonson said he doubted the measure would pass, describing the proposal as 'unacceptable'.

But town officials insist they are actively considering the idea of a ban.

While smoking used to be universally common and socially acceptable throughout the U.S., it has become increasingly controversial over the years.

There are now very few public places where it is legal to smoke, and to crack down on lighting up on private property would be extremely restricting.

Because you created the thread and there are hundreds of people who view Boards on their mobiles. Some sites don't have mobile versions, and it can be a pain in the hole to try and read something not made for mobile.

Do you really think we'll still be smoking in 50 years. Eventually it will die out and the human race will be better off they're only creating the future now much like Ireland did being the first to introduce a ban nationwide. They should be applauded as for liberty sometimes we humans need to be told to stop ****ing drinking arsenic.

Why bother making up all theses different laws about where you can and cannot smoke?

Why make in almost unaffordable to buy cigarettes?

Why waste millions on advertising campaigns trying to get people to stop smoking?

Just ban it ffs and move on.

Well it should be banned in all public places, I hate walking behind a smoker and getting wafts of the putrid smell or at a bus-stop.

But you should be allowed to do what you like on your own property, that new law is crazy.

Don't think they'll ever ban smoking tbh. Too many people depend on it and people would still get their hands on them somehow, which would just mean that the government lose out on tax in the end.

And that is why they should be legal.

Prohibiting smoking altogether won't stop people from smoking.

They'll only end up damaging their health even more smoking counterfeit cigarettes, and the government loses out on revenue. Plus it encourages crime.

Why can't people get this ^^ through their thick heads?

They can't stop heroin FFS and people are actually advocating the creation of a whole new revenue stream for drug dealers and the spending of taxes on trying to suppress the consumption of another naturally growing plant.

Prohibition just does not work yet people keep suggesting it as a solution to a victimless 'crime'.

Such slavish, servile, attitudes that people wear proudly. Ban this, ban that. Tax this, tax that.

Waterford Regional Hospital has a total ban on smoking anywhere in the grounds too.

I'm a smoker myself but I think it is a really good Idea. I was out there recently to visit my brothers new baby and walking in the door I saw a couple of heavily pregnant women puffing away and another dude smoking THROUGH A HOLE IN HIS NECK! I don't usually do righteous anger but that is fucked up.

I seen that in a toilet in Beaumont it was the weirdest thing I ever seen I end up staring, I then went outside for a smoke to ease the shock.

Wait till you're a patient in the hospital and then see if you still think its a good idea. The patients will still smoke it's just being made more annoying for them.
