Sitting in The Black Sheep for lunch and had a Seirra Nevada Porter to wash down my burger which was lovely but decided to get one more before I wander to stony batter on my way to the train station and went of a Cutthroat Porter by Odell Brewing and I have to say I am mightly impressed, fantastic american porter style beer (probably my favourite style of beer), very well rounded, decent amount of bitterness to cut through the roasted malts and caramel tastes and a really earthy kick at the end, almost herbal.

Will def be buying a few of these in my next drinkstore order!

yes, the cutthroat is a lovely porter

La trappe bockbier - i had it before but gorgeous, the first taste is so damn good, i need to try the rest of la trappe range

I also had anchor humming ale

Anyone tried Hop Head on cask? Went into Porterhouse Nassau on Saturday but they were all out. Hoping to be able to get some tomorrow.

Also, only just noticed myself but the Porterhouse now have a loyalty card scheme, buy 9 get 1 free. Worth picking one up. :)

If you like Hop Head any other way, you'll like it on cask. If it's in decent condition.

Had they replaced TSB on the beer engine with it or was it an additional cask?

They announced that it was available via Facebook on Friday and it was all gone 24 hours later so it must have sold very well anyway.

Additional, they've 2 pumps in Nassau st now and i'm assuming it's the same on Parliament st.

Ename Trippel Abbey ale...not bad, but undistinguished...my 2 cents

I had it in Against the Grain either December or January and thought it was amazing, nicer than on keg for me.

Had a boring 2 hour lecture and thought I'd come home and treat myself to my bottle of Flying Dog Pale Ale while watching the Ireland match. Got home and dropped it as I pulled it off my shelf. So there's no pale ale for me but my room smells of delicious hops...

Having the Saltaire Triple Chocoholic instead, going down very well.

    Ouch!

I'm raiding my stash for the match too. Starting off with Thornbridge Tzara. Tbh, I wasn't expecting much but I actually quite like. Nice refreshing Ale/Lager hybrid. It's like a lager with a bit of bite coupled with a nice touch of fruity zesty hops. Would make a nice summer quencher, but at the price you wouldn't have too many.

I thought Tzara was lovely. I'm also watching the matching and having a BrewDog Paradox Jura. I love BrewDog and this is excellent.

Any unique flavours or notes? A bar near me is getting in a keg of paradox Jura next week, so I'm looking forward to trying it.

I had a bottle of paradox Arran a while back, but I don't think I'd sufficiently accustomed my palate to big complex stouts so probably didn't fully appreciate it.

I've had some really great beers this week.

Flying Dog, Wild Dog, Barrel aged Gonzo Imperial Porter. Beautiful - huge but delicate if that makes sense. Expensive.

PorterHouse, Barrel Aged Celebration Stout. Really well made example of a whiskey aged stout and really good value for money. More....

2005 Boon Kriek. I've had this bottle since 2007. It has aged beautifully - it's a little less fruity and more Lambic beery and the colour has changed from pink to chestnut brown. Worth waiting for. One bottle left.

Franciscan Well, Alpha Dawg, IPA. Really good IPA. Maybe a touch fresh - will give my other bottle a few weeks. Lovely bottle again. Great to see them make limited releases of interesting beer. Would love to see some of them in smaller bottle in the future at sensible prices. Bring on the next limited release and I will pay the silly money for it!

O' Hara's Leann Follain, Extra stout. A firm favourite of mine.

Ola Dubh 18YO whiskey cask aged porter. First time trying the 18YO. Very good but the PorterHouse gives it a serious run for it's money. I'd have to drink them side by side to work out a favourite.

Nogne O #500, Double IPA. This has become a regular beer for me. Expensive but compared to some of the American specials, the Abstrakts, or even the Thornbridge beers knocking around, it is positively good value for such a massive hitting, well balanced beer.

It's been a very good week for beer!
Great to see Irish brewers getting out of the Blonde, Irish Red, Stout/Porter boring, boring, boring self imposed restraints.
More seasonals, more specials, more casks, more extreme beers!!
    Exciting times!:D

Picked up two bottles of Trouble Ór and two of Dark Porter (4 for €10 in Drinkstore currently).
Combined with the bottles of Dungarvan's Coffee and Oatmeal I have at home, I can't wait until I finish work tomorrow.

I am in Qingdao this weekend (where the Chinese beer Tsingdao is made). I will be tasting some of their brews at their factory later today. I will post some pictures if possible.

I only got a half because I still havnt found my cask legs. Wanted to try it though. Was the head on it the result of a sparkler you see some people complain about?

No sparkler today, and a good head. Just good carbonation.

Do people complain about cask pints served with a sparkler?!
I much prefer a pint through a sparkler (maybe I'm alone on that one!)

It's very much a British thing: sparklers are northern and an abomination unto the southerners. I have seen a Dublin barman struggling to pour a lively pint of Helvick through a totally unnecessary tight sparkler once, but mostly it doesn't make a huge difference.

Most of our casks are breathered (another massive bone of contention in GB) so don't lose condition in the same way as non-breathered, meaning a pub here is less likely to feel the need to put a sparkler on.

Little Valley ,Withens Pale Ale - its like a lighter version of Helvick gold.
Really enjoyed a shared bottle of this today.

Pours a dark blonde and some sediment.
A hoppy citrus kick and a dry finish. Not a bad little beer but I prefer Helvick to this.

Just to add to what Beernut said, Ive also heard them moaning because the head means their not getting a full pint.

Personally I also preferred the hophead then other casks as it had a nice head and a smooth mouth feel (aswell as all that hophead goodness). I dont think Ive tried a cask beer with a sparkler.

The parsimonious Yorkshireman says you should be using a lined glass anyway.

I cant understand why they would sacrifice aesthetic appeal, texture and increased beer drinking satisfaction for a few extra mls of beer. Imagine if the brewer felt he wouldn't use lined glasses due to the little extra beer that would form the head.

When I was working in the UK I took great satisfaction in watching them slosh those few extra mls on there hand and shoes on the way back to their table. ;)

Messrs Maguires Pale ale. Going down well. Well worth the hype.

It's very malty and smokey. A hint of caramel too. Despite being 15%, it's not too overpowering.
I would like to taste it against Arran.
