I always find it weird that these threads about the English team seem to be far more popular than threads about the Irish one.

Is that there many of our English friends posting on here or is that there many Irish people that take an interest in them?

Each to their own though so fill your boots.

for the impending calamity of course!

I think Pearce flagged days in advance that it was an experimental squad, deliberately leaving out some senior players.

So all the 'OMG I can't believe he is leaving out XXXX' stuff is a bit lol.

But he's not left out experienced players, other than Lampard. He's take the 'difficult' decision to take out the fringe players. If he wanted to experiement he should have got rid of Gerrard, Cole, Rooney, Walcott and others.

Wouldn't Ferdinand & Carrick count as experienced players left out?
Gerrard has to be involved as likely new captain I suppose.
Maybe Walcott still counts as promising youngster :)

Ferdinand is a crock. Carrick is hardly an established international. I presume he's not been selected because Pearce doesn't think he's good enough.

It just seems a strange squad to me. The Lescott decision is baffling.

I think it is a pretty well balanced squad. Lescott should be there. His omission is strange as he is playing so well at the moment. I suppose Capello would not get rid of the older players so Pearce is doing the right thing in bringing in the next generation of players.

I think the reason we (Irish) always take an interest in the England squad, especially coming up to a major finals, is that it just wouldn't be the same without them. The ridiculous hype, the unreasonable expectation, the controversy, the scandal, the inevitable flop, it's like a good soap opera.

On a more serious note I'm a little surprised that Pearce is still there. It seems to be largely forgotten now but at the WC a couple of years ago there was major rumblings of discontent about his coaching/training methods, or the lack of them. It was rumoured that many of the players don't really respect him as a coach, so I wonder will he keep the job for the Euro Finals or is that even being spoken of as an option?

Pearce's press conference today was pretty much his application to do the job through the Euros at least.

"I'm available and have expereience of tournament football" is along the lines of how he put it.

Why would you find it weird?

The English Premier League teams are easily the most popular on this forum, so it would go hand in hand that the England squad would be talked about, almost all the players in the squad will play for the biggest teams in England, so they will be players that the posters here support week in week out.

Quite natural that they will be interested

As I said, "fill your boots", I just don't get it.

Personally I want to see England humped every time they play.:D

Interesting coming from someone who supports a foreign club.

Well I'd rather follow Celtic then a team like Shels whose fans have been known to sing "The Famine Song" on occassion.

I often wonder where they would have been
If we hadn't have taken them in
    Fed them and washed them
    Thousands in Glasgow alone
    From Ireland they came
Brought us nothing but trouble and shame
    Well the famine is over
    Why don't they go home?

Now Athenry Mike was a thief
And Large John he was fully briefed
And that wee traitor from Castlemilk
Turned his back on his own
They've all their Papists in Rome
    They have U2 and Bono
    Well the famine is over
    Why don't they go home?

Now they raped and fondled their kids
That's what those perverts from the darkside did
And they swept it under the carpet
    and Large John he hid
Their evils seeds have been sown
Cause they're not of our own
    Well the famine is over
    Why don't you go home?

Now Timmy don't take it from me
Cause if you know your history
    You've persecuted thousands of people
    In Ireland alone
    You turned on the lights
    Fuelled U boats by night
    That's how you repay us
    It's time to go home.

Ya Smalling & Cahill are the only two CBs playing in that position regularly for their clubs.
 Smalling has only played half of the games United have played and the vast majority of those appearances were at right back.

Injuries have kinda played a part don't you think?

Both to himself, and to the right back!

Smalling is an important member of the first team.

Edit: Also maybe your not being deliberately misleading, but you are being misleading

He has played 14 of 25 league games (considering he has missed most of February, missing time in October, missing most of November etc.) this is not exactly terrible is it, kinda means when he is fit he plays more often then not.

He also played in 4 of the 6 Champions League matches, missing games only when injured iirc.

    Doesnt really belong in thread.

Good to see some experimentation in the squad. Older lads wont be around much after Euros so may be a good chance to blood young players.

I'm fairly confident this isn't true. But if it is:
    1) What are we, racist against Irish people?
    2) How is this in any way relevant to the thread, or even the direction you took the thread in?

Yeah, so many like to opine on how the English team will fall apart despite the apparent quality in the side. Since so many here follow the English game, they can give their thoughts on why a certain position or partnership won't work.

I couldn't give such opinions since I have very little interest in the Premiership outside of how members of the Irish international side are doing but others are perfectly entitled to do so.

Edited out the crap song with the easy rhyming scheme, i always wonder why the always make the AB AB ?

    here bobby,

how many potatoes does it take to kill an irishman?

    None

I got told that be an English guy and man it still cracks me up.

What relevance is it to football? Absolutely nothing. Feel free to tell your friends.

I severly doubt that Shels fans ever sang such a song, as I just can't imagine someone going in the terraces, you know what i'd like to sing about now?

I agree CSF on everything about the Irish being a race. We're not.

Back on topic, SP is the worst manager out there imo. I fully expected him to pick Mancienne for the squad and make him captain.

I am delighted to see Cam Stewart in the u-21's, watched him for the united reserves and always was a player i enjoyed on.

Once again, are you implying that he doesn't have saves to make? And are world class saves made in the Championship (and he's made lots this season) somehow not as good as if the save was made in the PL?
His performance recently against Southampton was as good as any goalkeeping performance I've seen this season in any league.

I've seen him make saves this season yes. But there obviously not at as high a standard as the Premiership because if they were they'd be playing Premiership football. He hasn't seemed to have as many brain farts this season I'll give him that. Maybe it's because he is kept busier but his concentration can be woeful at times.

I opened up this thread expecting to see a discussion on 'Pearce's England Squad'. To be honest most of the posts have thankfully been just about that, but how in hell can 'The Famine Song' be linked to 'Pearce's England Squad' is beyond me.

Anyway, back on topic....... I'm quite happy with the squad.
