    Downing???? LOLZ

Would've had Scott Sinclair ahead of him myself.

England will have a suspect defense if they plan on playing Cahill beside one of the United duo. Smalling deserves to start for his recent performances but Cahill has shown that unless he is beside a stopper type defender he is very dodgy.

Carrick played so well still the players who were out injured or not in good form are selected ahead of him.

No Carrick in the squad is a glaring mistake, but from a United point of view, its a very welcome mistake, no if only he would have left out Rooney Smalling Jones Clev and Young too I'd be delighted

    Add Welbeck to that!

I always find it weird that these threads about the English team seem to be far more popular than threads about the Irish one.

Is that there many of our English friends posting on here or is that there many Irish people that take an interest in them?

Each to their own though so fill your boots.

Severe lack of centre backs and over inclusion of right backs. Would've had Ruddy and Ox in there myself. Question- Could Baines lack of versatility cost him a place in Poland/Ukraine?

Not really to be fair. He had been in the form of his life from 2007-2009 and couldn't get a look in for some reason (he even wore gloves bearing "England's No. 6" on them and regularly had that sung to him by our fans). In the 09/10 season he had a noticeable drop in form (as did all of our players) and I was surprised that he was picked as number 1 for the World Cup.
Thankfully, he's put the shambolic way he was treated after the USA game behind him and is back on top form.

The English Premier League teams are easily the most popular on this forum, so it would go hand in hand that the England squad would be talked about, almost all the players in the squad will play for the biggest teams in England, so they will be players that the posters here support week in week out.

Quite natural that they will be interested

Ya Smalling & Cahill are the only two CBs playing in that position regularly for their clubs. Jones is a CB but has mostly played CM or RB this season for United. Crazy amount of RBs selected.

AOC should have been given a chance and shocked Carrick hasn't made it considering how well he has played since December but as Kryogen said it's Uniteds gain as a weeks rest will be welcome. He'll continue being one of our main players in the title run in.

Baines will be included for the Euros but can't see him getting near the team unless Cole picks up a knock. Savage player to have as back-up.

Where'd you come up with that? He made one mistake in one game in the World Cup and was hung out to dry. People seem to forget that he wasn't the only one who made errors in that game (Heskey shooting straight at Howard when one on one). He also made a very good save later on in the game.
But to be honest, I couldn't care less if Green doesn't get a game for England given the injury risk. I just find it funny that certain people still base their opinions of a player on one single game almost 2 years ago.

No Lescott is a crazy decision. He was head and shoulders above everyone else in the last game, IMO (I know Parker won MOTM but it should have been Lescott).

As an Englishman, that defensive selection scares me.

Yeah there is 5 players that can play RB selected, madness! Will they bring 7 or 8 defenders I wonder? Richards, Jones, Terry, A.Cole should be the starters I'd imagine Johnson is a shoe in as can cover both sides, Cahill will go, Baines should and will they include Smalling aswell? So many spots up for grabs

Without a shadow of a doubt Smalling should be in the starting 11, whether he goes or not shouldn't even be up for debate.

If Cole and Baines go, and Richards starting at RB, i'd have Walker ahead of Johnson. He's been very good so far this season

Can't see Jones starting for England at CB anytime soon. Smalling should be in there and at the moment I'd have Lescott in the squad ahead of Cahill.

I think Pearce flagged days in advance that it was an experimental squad, deliberately leaving out some senior players.

So all the 'OMG I can't believe he is leaving out XXXX' stuff is a bit lol.

But he's not left out experienced players, other than Lampard. He's take the 'difficult' decision to take out the fringe players. If he wanted to experiement he should have got rid of Gerrard, Cole, Rooney, Walcott and others.

Wouldn't Ferdinand & Carrick count as experienced players left out?
Gerrard has to be involved as likely new captain I suppose.
Maybe Walcott still counts as promising youngster :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,166 ✭✭✭Beefy78

Ferdinand is a crock. Carrick is hardly an established international. I presume he's not been selected because Pearce doesn't think he's good enough.

It just seems a strange squad to me. The Lescott decision is baffling.

I think it is a pretty well balanced squad. Lescott should be there. His omission is strange as he is playing so well at the moment. I suppose Capello would not get rid of the older players so Pearce is doing the right thing in bringing in the next generation of players.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,925 ✭✭✭aidan24326

I think the reason we (Irish) always take an interest in the England squad, especially coming up to a major finals, is that it just wouldn't be the same without them. The ridiculous hype, the unreasonable expectation, the controversy, the scandal, the inevitable flop, it's like a good soap opera.

On a more serious note I'm a little surprised that Pearce is still there. It seems to be largely forgotten now but at the WC a couple of years ago there was major rumblings of discontent about his coaching/training methods, or the lack of them. It was rumoured that many of the players don't really respect him as a coach, so I wonder will he keep the job for the Euro Finals or is that even being spoken of as an option?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,166 ✭✭✭Beefy78

Pearce's press conference today was pretty much his application to do the job through the Euros at least.

"I'm available and have expereience of tournament football" is along the lines of how he put it.

I often wonder where they would have been
If we hadn't have taken them in
    Fed them and washed them
    Thousands in Glasgow alone

Brought us nothing but trouble and shame
    Well the famine is over

Injuries have kinda played a part don't you think?

Both to himself, and to the right back!

Smalling is an important member of the first team.

Edit: Also maybe your not being deliberately misleading, but you are being misleading

He has played 14 of 25 league games (considering he has missed most of February, missing time in October, missing most of November etc.) this is not exactly terrible is it, kinda means when he is fit he plays more often then not.

He also played in 4 of the 6 Champions League matches, missing games only when injured iirc.

Good to see some experimentation in the squad. Older lads wont be around much after Euros so may be a good chance to blood young players.
