When Tony spoke about the number of channels on Freesat, he didn't clarify that they include 18 regions of BBC1, 4 regions of BBC2, as well as numerous regions of ITV1, Channel 4 & Channel 5. Hardly transparent.

Was it just me or was Weckler a little too Sky UPC leaning ? Lets face it UPC / Sky Sports is neither 30 or 40 euros, it is packaged with other basic packages which you MUST buy.

Cooper thought there was something illegal about the dish being yours when you have exited Sky's contract!

    YAY for Combo boxes.....

Here is the Chopped audio from that webstream.

Just listening to the interview, I thought in future I mustn't get so taken in by other interviews & interviewees on this show if other subjects and experts are treated in the same way, ie: fairly lightly and almost misinformed in certain regards

People own and are responsible for ALL the Sky gear from the day it's installed. People never own the UPC MMDS dish or box or remote.

I don't know why Adrian Weckler gets these interviews.

That would be needless detail. People generally only interested in one region.

No, you're missing my point. He was selling Freesat on the basis that there are 130 free channels available, but a huge number of these channels are just regional variations of BBC1, BBC2, ITV1, ITV1+1, C4, C4+1, C5 etc etc

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,461 ✭✭✭✭watty

There are possibly over 200 free TV channels and 70 Radio.

It could be that only 40 to 50 of the TV and 10 of the radio interest most people. I think it wasn't an unreasonable claim. Over half the UPC and Sky channels get less than 0.1% viewing. Sky1 under 2%.

So in context of comparison with UPC/Sky claiming a 130 channels isn't unreasonable.

I am all for FreeSat but as a sports fan it is not really an option to me but if the day comes that somehow you can subscribe to Sports on a FreeSat service then I would get it at that stage

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,461 ✭✭✭✭watty

Subscribe on a Freesat service is an oxymoron.

If you want Sky Sports you need Sky or UPC. However people that have it watch it less than 2% of the time. Perhaps visiting the Pub occasionally would be cheaper. There is a lot of Rugby and Football between all the free channels ( TG4, RTE, S4C, BBC, ITV, C4 etc)

Do you mean Sport or Premiership circus? :D

I mean premiership circus and not a drinker so not a big fan of pubs ,
Maybe one day FTA will be able to broadcast premiership on a PPV platform

For those of us with kids we can't just all hop to the pub at the drop of a hat so it's not really a feasible alternative never mind the cost of the drink be it alcohol or the soft stuff!

I would be interested to know how that 2% statistic is arrived at. Sky sports would be one of our most watched channels.

BARB in UK and Nielsen in Ireland.

Channel Share research is conducted by AGB Nielsen. It is mainly of interest to the stations themselves but also a very important tool used by advertisers.

You are assuming that across all households everyone has the same viewing habits as yourself. Not everyone can afford or are interested in Sky Sports. This is reflected consistently in the actual market share each year.

Sky Sports Channels Market Share in 2011 was less than 1% for each channel on multichannel figures

    Sky Sports 1 0.8%
    Sky Sports 2 0.5%

By comparison RTE1 commands a multichannel market share of 29.1%. I have the figures for National, Multichannel day and nightime. Sky Sports is not on the radar. What is surprising is that of the majority channels watched are those that are free to air (RTE, Tv3, RTE2, BBC, UTV, Ch4 etc) and that is measured across all platforms, beit Sky/UPC/or free to air within Ireland. Infact 9 out of the Top 10 are free to air, yet people pay subscription companies to view them! So the marketing of the Sky's and UPC's of this world is quite effective in the brainwashing department. Majority of punters are beginning to cop onto this as they look for bills to cut. But I strongly suspect that there is a strong lobby to prevent this type of word getting out especially in the papers in any coherent way, outside technical fora!

I know the sky channels have low overall market share but I was referring moreso to watty's comment that those who have sky sports watch it less than two percent of the time. I find this interesting, bizarre even, as to why one would opt into sky sports and then hardly ever watch it!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,461 ✭✭✭✭watty

Because you have it for important matches. Sky sports could most important viewing for you. But compared to the amount of hours the TV is watched in the household a small percentage.

But what did people do before Premiership and Sky Sports?

It's simple. Everyone should boycott the terribly overpriced Sky Sports. The price of the rights will drop because Sky would be uninterested. The crazy money would stop and players get paid sensible salaries. Football would improve and be Free To Air.

People being prepared to pay the crazy money for such a small amount of viewing creates a massive distortion.

Firstly I was selling nothing and secondly the interview lasts only minutes and quite understandably the producer does not want it getting bogged down with irrelevancies. Think you need to get a grip there chief.

If you have a decent broadband connection you could subscribe to someone like liveonlinefooty.com and get all your premiership matches for £6 every 2 months. The quality may not be as good as a Sky Subscription, but it's very watchable, even on a 40inch tv.
I've got Saorview, FreeSat and Liveonlinefooty and am saving a fortune over what I was paying with UPC a couple of years ago, and I get to watch all the football I like (the wife and kids let me).

Very true but it would take a mass movement of people cancelling there Sky Sports and keeping it cancelled for a significant amount of time for this to happen and been honest this is never going to happen
On a personal note my only luxury in life is my Sky Sports and im sure there is plenty out there like me ( and I only watch it for a couple of hours a week )

+1, If I went to the pub for every Manchester United game that was televised it would cost a fortune, nobody is going to sit in a pub and drink tap water.Even if a game is on both Sky or TV3 I'll opt for Sky,the commentary & punditry on TV3 is dire.

I posted before that the high viewing figures for FTA is skewed by the vast amounts who watch soaps, depending on certain storylines the figures can hit 10 million in the UK and a huge % over here also.

Back on topic, everytime there's an article or interview with someone regarding Freesat we end up with misinformation or some eejit who doesn't know what he's talking about (Tony excepted from this)
Look at how many posts we see here along the lines of "I have a Skydish, should I swap it for a Freesat one" or " I have Sky,do I need to move my dish for Freesat?", half baked comments in the media don't help and just add to the confusion.

:pac::pac::pac: You'd be lucky to get dialup speeds in parts with Eircom.

Besides, that site that was mentioned earlier is illegal and shouldn't really be mentioned here.

    What do you mean ?

Audience measurement is nearly uniform these days. The likes of Nielsen are using Unitam metering.

The 5 year contract in Ireland that AGB have with Behaviour & Attitudes is worth €25m. Its well researched process I would imagine that factors in any type "skew".

The figures I quoted above are Irish viewing figures not UK viewing figures. The figures have been very consistent over the last number of years in channel watching.

The point is people watching Sky Sports is not significant, they would show up in channel share daytime or nighttime if that was the case.
