Performance based ones still must count against the cap though so it depends how much incentive he wants.

So, say for instance, there was a clause that Manning got $10million if he threw 50TD's...that would count towards the cap even if it wasn't met?!

Well no but how likely is it that Manning will put in very un-realistic targets? If he simply didn't wan the money he'd just sign a normal contract for cheap.

Well I was just using him as an example!

So incentive based bonuses don't count against the cap?!

I wouldn't have any idea what to do with Peyton Manning if I were the Colts. If I were Peyton Manning I would know exactly what I'd want to do, get the hell away from the colts.

Why would you want to get away?!

I'm not 100% sure how it works but I'm guessing they are if the incentive is reached. Otherwise teams would just sign guys to incentive based contracts all the time to get around the cap.

Yeah that's what I was thinking!

When is the cap actually totaled for the season?! Must be after the teams final game, only way to be accurate wouldn't it?!

From what I can make out, there is cap space for Manning's $28mil and Luck but it just leaves very little room for any other quality players. So say manning makes $8million, then you've got $20million to play with.

Whether or not it's incentive based, it probably won't come close to what he would have made.

Here's what I could find on the incentives issue
How does the NFL Salary Cap treat cash incentives?

Answer: All incentives are included in team salary if they are "likely to be earned" (LTBE). LTBE incentives are performance levels that the player or team has reached in the previous year.

For example, if a quarterback threw twenty touchdowns last year and his incentive clause for this year is set at fifteen touchdowns, then this incentive is “likely to be earned.” Also, incentives that are in the sole control of the player, like non-guaranteed reporting bonuses and off-season workout and weight bonuses, are considered LTBE.

An impartial arbitrator will hear disputes between the owners and the players concerning what should be considered LTBE (especially for rookies or veterans who did not play in the prior year). Conversely, if a player did not reach the performance incentive in the previous year, the incentive is deemed "not likely to be earned" (NLTBE) and is not included in team salary.

To determine whether a clause is LTBE or NLTBE for Salary Cap purposes (i.e., not whether the player actually earned the incentive), it is necessary to look at the performance of the team in the prior season, not the current season.

For example, assume Player X receives an incentive bonus if he participates in 50% of the team’s offensive plays this season. Assume further that last season the team had 1,000 offensive plays. Therefore, as soon as Player X plays in 500 plays in the current season (or 50% of last year’s 1,000 plays), the incentive will be considered earned for Salary Cap purposes.

The same incentive is considered "not earned" if the same player in the current year only participated in one of the team’s first 502 offensive plays. In this situation, it would be impossible for the player to achieve the 50% incentive based on last year’s performance of 1,000 plays. It is important to remember that looking to last year’s performance level is only for Salary Cap purposes and will not affect the player's right to receive a bonus for his performance in the current year.

Hmmm, well then LTBE wouldn't really apply in this case since he was out for the year!

Wonder how this affects someone who hasn't played in a year, and is still questionable, health-wise. Colts could dodge using cap space on Manning altogether?

Very unlikely. An independent arbitrator would decide so if he was declared fully fit and able to return then I wouldn't see any reason to think he's performance would diminish hugely. I'd certainly consider 20TDs to be LTBE for Manning.

Who would want to play for a bad team?

Explain how they are automatically a bad team even with him back...

They're meant to be losing 2 key offensive players in the offseason, as well as Freeney. I'd rather take my chances with most other teams in the NFL.

What are you on about? Freeney's going nowhere!

I remember there was lots of talk before the Texans game about Saturday, Wayne and Freeney (was it Mathis?) playing their last home game for the Colts who were about to go into a rebuilding process.

It was Wayne and Mathis! So your argument is fairly invalid when you can't even get it right to begin with!

That doesn't make it invalid. The argument is they're a bad team. It's fairly easy to mix up Freeney and Mathis imo. Even if they are a good team with Manning in, that's irrelevant in Manning's head, because then he can make any team better (apart from the Browns, I don't think and QB could succeed there) if he went to them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,173 ✭✭✭✭kmart6

No, it's not easy to mix them up if you know who and what your talking about!

So were they a bad team last year when they went 10-6?

They were a team built to lead, an assumption almost totally predicated on Manning's already-legendary ability. Under-sized d-line built to rush, no strong run game.

The Colts are better than 2-12 without Manning, but not by much. If Luck can slot into Manning's mold straight away they can be plenty competitive, ala Carolina this season, but with the Texans lurking I'd be hugely surprised to see the Colts in the play-offs in the next two seasons.

You care to source this rumour? I don't think it's likely at all. Makes no sense for either Washington, who are in full on re-building mode and need to upgrade all over the field, or for Manning who won't go to a team with zero chance of winning a championship, a terrible O-line and a poor enough receiving corps

Also don't think he'll want to play Eli twice per year either.

So I call BS on this.

Joe Theismann thinks it is a bad idea. Would be better to take a risk on a younger QB IMO

I'd rather not see peyton in the NFC East but the Skins are not a million miles away from being playoff contender.

Sure they need some help at wide-out but Moss/Gaffney are serviceable, Hankerson is a potential star & Cooley/Davis are decent tightends. Shanahan can scheme a RB to be good and they have a very good defense. Orakpo, Kerrigan, Cofield, Landry, Atogwe, Fletcher & Hall are all top class pro-bowl calibre guys.

If you upgrade Beck/Grossman to Manning your pretty much guaranteed a 10 win team.

Again i dont want it to happen but its a very decent spot for Manning to go.
