I honestly don't see why people would buy clubs off the shops here in Ireland. When looking for clubs i found Mc Guirks etc to be way more expensive than most of the online sites. A lot of these sites only charge €7 for delivery which is a bargain when you are making big savings on the overall cost.

Lads in fairness i have never paid the list price for any item i have ever bought in McGuirks, a 10% - 20% discount is standard without much haggling.

Any idea what the rough mark-up would be on a set of clubs sold by McGuirks?

Is it standard?I never knew this to be honest as i'm only new again to the game. Do you just send a email or call i into the shop?

I'm looking into buying irons at the moment, hit a few in Kinsealy the other day. I haven't quite made my mind up so I checked out some prices online and McGuirks were cheaper for the R11, diablo edge and Razr X then both golfstoreeurope.com and onlinegolf.co.uk. The G20 irons were much the same price. It can be cheaper to buy online but not always and as was said previously there is also room to haggle in McGuirks.

The other thing I noticed is that Mcguirks and Hal'penny prices are pretty much Identical even though they both have sales on. For example the burner 2.0s are on sale in both stores at €472 and the diablo edge for €494. Coincidence???????

It could be manufacturer led reductions.

Out of my last four purchases, two were on golfstoreeurope, one was on ebay (tees) and one was in McGuirks. I went with price each time.

However, the problem that I have is that I worry that if I and everyone else continue to buy online, will that lessen the presence of golf shops in Ireland? As such, if I need to try on jackets, test irons/drivers/shafts, will there be less shops available?

Tbh what annoys me the most is the lack of left handed clubs these sites carry. Was looking to purchase the new burners or possibly preorder the new rocket balls but can't find them anywhere in left handed guise. Would prefer to use twog.com in the states but the inevitable problem of customs will rear its ugly head.....

Pretty standard maverick, last time i bought in McGuirks was December, i bought a Titleist Tour bag with a list price of €199, I said i was interested but couldn't afford the list price and asked the sales rep what he could do, one check of the margins on the computer and he came back with €179. I said I had budget €160 and couldn't go much higher and dealt at €169. Nice fella and the price suited both of us. Def call into the shop to deal like this as they're quite good to deal with and will give a fair price after a conversation.

On the other post i reckon their gross margins are around the 35% mark which would suggest a cost price of the above bag of approx €129, obviously this is the cost price before overheads are applied so when adding overheads of approx €11 (complete estimate) the sales rep had another €29 leeway from the price he dealt at (€169) before he is at rock bottom cost price, the rest depends on what store policy the have for max discounts before higher approval needed etc.

Got a voucher at Christmas and went over to Blanchardstown to buy some new vokey wedges. Not one left handed vokey in stock

I'm a leftie as well and find there is a very limited selection of clubs in the shops.I have looked at lefthandedgolf.com and a few others online that seem to have a decent selection.

Seeing as ur new to the game the best recommendation i could give to you is play right handed. I'm left handed and play right handed, seeing as ur body will be getting used to swinging a club anyway just get used to it on the other side.

Dont you get that you are supposed to pay for the privilege of testing/trying things before you buy? Thats why the shops are there and thats why they are more expensive.
If everyone used McGuirks as a fitting room and then bought online they would cease to exist, as would all other shops...and then where would you be?

Same for people who skip queues, enter bus lanes early etc.

I was looking to get a set of Mizuno JPX 800 Pros before xmas.

They were about €570 on most sites - 5-PW (golfstoreeurop, mcguirks, halpennys)

I got an e-mail from golfstoreeurope with a 10% off this weekend only code, bringing the price down to roughly €510.

Before buying i went into American Golf just to have another look at them to make sure i was happy with the purchase. The guy came over and asked if i was ok so i just asked him how much they were in 5-PW (Price on the sticker was 4-PW) He said €490 ! There was no sale or anything.

So i was able to get "custom fit" (got to go on the Mizuno Swing DNA thing) try out loads of shaft options etc... (for which i would have gladly paid an small bit extra over the on-line stores) and still saved money.

I know the on-line stores are generally cheaper but it just goes to show - dont ALWAYS assume they are

That's great, pity their markup over GolfStoreEurope's prices on shoes I'm thinking of purchasing are 19.8% (Footjoy Dryjoys) and 32.9% (Footjoy AQLs)

Do golfstoreeurope let you try them on before you buy?

My current pair of shoes are footjoy so trying on before hand isn't an issue for me since I know my size. That said I do think GolfStoreEurope have a store in Derry if you're in that area or willing to travel for a fitting.

The one factor in favor of McGuirks at present is that I have some GUI vouchers I'd earmarked for replacement shoes and not sure if there's a means of using these to purchase online but will inquire or alternatively use the vouchers for something needed and that isn't at a RoI premium price.

Agreed Greebo, so many people talking about cheaper alternatives but don't consider that McGuirks have the costs of running the shops to cover. McGuirks is by far the best and cheapest golf shop (excluding cyberspace warehouses) in Ireland and through a bit of bargaining u can get close to the online prices of the other stores mentioned.

With the attitude of some people, its only a matter of time before we all have to buy online and don't get a chance to sample the goods before we buy which can be a lottery at times.

So as long as you are buying duplicates or live in a different country?
Surely having a local shop with advice and the ability to try/compare is worth something.

I think you are missing the point of why bricks and mortar shops cost more.
