Followed up a few days later with "I could have sworn I saw your Jimmy in a pub in town last week but when I went over to talk to him he made a run for the door with what must have been a girl from work......I MUST have been mistaken, it was very like him though....!"

I've broke up with 2 girlfriends in and around Valentine's day due to me refusing to acknowledge it. First girl got all pissed off on the evening of Valentine's day and called me cheap. So I finished with her there and then. The other was the day before it when I told her I won't be getting cards or presents. She got into a big hissy fit saying she deserved to be spoilt on the day. So that was the end of her.

Current girlfriend hates it as much as I do. Asked very early in the relationship. So I won't be doing a thing for it.

Star got there before me, but yeah are you reeeeeally sure she'd rather not do anything? :D

for me, i'm honestly meh about it. i don't hate it, let people do something if they like, but as long as you're both on the same page. my opinion of it is it's a silly thing being told when to do things for a partner.

It's a pathetic holiday celebrated by insecure clingy losers who place too much emphasis on horsesh*t fed to them by a card company. Breaking up with someone because they didn't get you a card? Or bring you out for over priced reheated muck?? Sounds like you'd be better off without such needy dimwits.

And I love the attitude "oh you must be a bitter singleton", um no, actually, I'm not. And my fiancé knows me well enough by now to know if he did bring home flowers in valentines day he'd most likely end up being made eat them.

Which brings me to another point. Flowers are romantic, whut? They're not. They're colourful weeds, that die within a few days... That's supposed to signify love?? Something that withers away and dies??

I suppose it does hold true for the idiots who do go OTT on valentines day, as they're making the most of not being alone for one day, but rest assured they'll most likely be alone the following year.

    :)

i like lingerie - therefore i like valentines day as it means i dont have to charm and cajole as much as any normal weekend...it's basically like 'ahhhh ffs, it's valentines day - up there with ya now, i'll finish me onion and garlic sandwich and be up in a minute'...

yep ladies - all the good ones are gone and the rest are handicapped. i fall into the first category :D

always baffles me this. the tradition came from the fact that people stank so f'ucking much before we'd running heated water that you'd bring flowers so you didn't just focus on the fact that your lover reminded you of a half rotted pig in a slurry pit.

i remind EVERYONE of this fact at EVERY wedding i've ever been to...

Not a great fan of it - anniversary of first date with my husband and wedding anniversary are important though. Also the day before it several years ago I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes and tomorrow is 5 years since I had a total oesophagectomy so they stand out not valentines day.

Fecking pointless! I fail to see why I need to make on day of the year special, if you only make an effort one day of the year for your relationship whats the point in being in one?

There will be no cards, flowers, over priced dinners or heart shaped rubbish coming into this household! Hate all the bullsh1t nonsense!

    This.

And it's f*cking annoying to hear women (generally) going on about what they got for Valentine's day - yeah - what did you get out of the goodness of his heart? F*ck all that's what!

Wow, what's with all the resentment??

It's just a day like any other, except maybe you get a card from someone or a bunch of flowers (unlike you, I love flowers) from someone as a way of saying I love you.

Sometimes people get so wrapped up in work, or being a parent, or worried about paying bills that the romance gets lost and you put your relationship on the back burner and VD can be a day people use to reconnect a bit with that other person with a small but meaningful gesture.

If some people want to go overboard on the day, so what? Doesn't make them idiots or losers. Some people are just naturally more romantic than others.

It seems fashionable to be cynical about these things nowadays, but I quite enjoy the day that's in it. I'll be heading out for a bite to eat with my fella and catching a film - something we hardly ever do any more because of work and being parents and saving money. So, I for one, am quite looking forward to next week!

I have never tried to get a babysitter on Valentines day but I imagine that it would be overpriced, as are most things on that day. My husband is getting me a single red rose and a dress and I am getting him a travel mug - not exciting but we still consider every day to be a date.

Well well well, isn't that just marital bliss.

A travel mug. How romantic. *sighs*

BTW what's the difference between a travel mug and an ordinary mug.

    Does it have wheels?

OK, not romantic but he has caffine for blood and it will keep his large mug of coffee warmer longer...I accept, not a great present.

Its another media/Corporate holiday where people are led to believe they need to do things because everyone else is doing it.

If you want to do something nice for your girlfriend/boyfriend husband/wife grand but why not ****ing do it any other day of the year instead of on the 14th of February because ''A banner in a shop told you to'' .

I have in the past bought things for girls i was with on Valentines day to be honest mainly because i knew if i didnt i would never ever hear the last of it.

Thankfully the girl im with long term now does not go in for all the fake bollox and sees things the same as me :)

From now on i do nice things for people on days like this because i care about them not because i feel under pressure to.

Funny thing is i imagine most people who splash out unnecessary this year will be the same ones who are on here moaning the next day uhhh the recession uhhh the government is robbing us.......

It is over rated, I don't see the need it is just all about how much money people spend and if you really love somebody they will know. You don't have to spend all that money just show you care everyday.

i try and do something/go somewhere different for valentines each year im single, this will be my first year of being single since 07 on valentines tbh, ha never believe someone when they tell you youll never be single on valentines again :pac:,

To the person who called resentful, I'm not resentful at all. I just happen to think people who need VD to feel loved must have serious emotional problems.

Resentful? No. I'm just secure in my relationship in that I don't that kinda validation with Tack

seems pretty resentful to me. If it's not your bag, fine. No need to insult people who do celebrate it, though.

Personally, I don't know anyone who need Valentines Day to feel loved. It's one day set aside in the year to send a card (if you wish) or buy a bunch of flowers (if you wish) or have a romantic night out (if you wish) or have a romantic night in (if you wish). Nobody's forced to do it, but the sentiment behind it is kinda nice, I think. Certainly not deserving of such vitriol!!

If your OH Didnt get you a card and present would you break up with him/be a drama queen about it?

    No -- Good.
Yes -- May need to reassess mental health.

Yeah, that's a pretty stupid thing to break up over alright.
