After reading some stories in AH that create huge emotion and IF the death penalty was brought back in, would you seriously:

apply for the job and what qualities do you think would be needed to successfully carry out the job??

Would you only do it, if it was an injection or would you be able to do it if it was hanging?????

No. Wouldn't be the job for me.

The hangman does more than just pull the lever or flick the switch by the way. When on a tour of Mountjoy in school a few years back (odd place for a school tour, I know) the tour guide/guard compared the job of the hangman to that of a bungee jumping expert.

He has to work out the length and "give" of the rope based on the height and weight of the individual to maximise "efficiency" of the execution (i.e. as quick a death as possible) as the executioner is ultimately responsible for any failed executions.

    It depends on the pay.

If its good pay you'd better have an application form in the post for me.

There were families of executioners from around Ireland and England who all inter married as no one else would marry them.

I seriously think I could flick the switch on this guy and walk away and NEVER have a regret about it, but if I had to hang him or behead him, no way I couldn't do it.

I'd kill for a job like that.
I'm dead set on pursuing it.
But the hours might be murder.
    etc
    etc

    *gets coat*

It depends I suppose. If the executions are being carried out by lethal injection then the sums are simple and the apparatus can even be configured to look for key signs of life and inject more until death occurs.

At the moment, it's the only form of humane execution. All other forms are violent and used to exact revenge rather than simply execute the person.

A similarly foolproof method which is not used is nitrogen asphyxiation or oxygen deprivation. Both induce no pain or any other kind of suffering/reaction in the prisoner and you can easily set it up so that death is absolutely guaranteed.

But no I couldn't actually apply to be an executioner because I don't agree with using the death penalty due to the inherent imperfection of any justice system.

Interestingly , there is a connection between executions ( hanging specifically ) and Dublin Zoo .... 10 pts if you can name it !

To the OP, no , I couldn't do it, don't Dr's in the US have ethical problems with the lethal injection because it's against their oath or something ?

The great, great granddaughter of Seamus Ahern, who had a short-lived career as an executioner in Mountjoy, currently works as PR manager for Dublin Zoo.

    Gimme my points!

If the death penalty ever creeps back into Ireland it would be through the EU and it would be thanks to all that voted yes in the Lisbon Treaty. .

10 pts to the person on the left , if it's true that's worth 10 pts , the original question still stands .

No. I'm 100% against the death penalty and I couldn't carry the guilt of killing another humming bean.

what are the benefits like? Is there mileage? Health insurance?
Its not your average job, but if all you have to do is flick a switch or pull a lever behind a partition...where do I sign?
