What change out of a fiver? Most pubs I drink in are 4.85 for a pint and some posh pubs in the city centre are even over a fiver! Got a rock shandy in a normal pub and was charged 5.30!

4.20 for a pint, 80c aint bad, if he got that every drink... well i'd probably start serving drinks again myself ;)

dont really tip taxi drivers too much unless drunk or some good conversation arises :)

If you wait for 5cents change or it means that much to you, you shouldn't be having dinner out in my opinion!!!

judging people on this is foolish. People should be able to eat out if they want and not be ridiculed by the greedy when they don't tip. Maybe you should understand customer service and the fact that you get tipped for going beyond your duties. Don't expect tips for simply taking an order and serving. That happens to be your job.

Do you even remember what you were commenting on..?

I was taking about how someone waited for 5cents tip while I was waiting to use the tell - pretty embarrassing on their behalf!

Then you said that I shouldn't judge their circumstance but DAVET82 and I both said that if 5cents means that much to them that they shouldn't be eating out. I think that is a fair remark to make.

Hence, we are not greedy or ridiculing anybody so don't feel the need to escalate what has been said; it's fairly light-hearted.

Also, maybe you should judge my understanding customer service and understand that your unsubstantiated fact has about as much meaning as your post and is pretty derogatory towards service personnel!

You shouldn't have to tip to get better service, Ideally you should get the best service wherever you go. Unfortunately our levels of customer service leave a lot to be desired(From what I have experienced anyway). If I go into a coffee shop / restaurant and get fab service, I'll tip. If I get anything less than excellent service then I won't simple as. I worked in the service industry, I never went into my job expecting to get a tip(as I got minimum wage) however if I did well it made me happy :)

Haha, I was expecting change from my fiver, didn't know that I was going to have to add to it!

Also, just remembering that I was down in a small town in Wicklow and was charged 5.80 for one! Not for the faint hearted :D

Well the thing is - if they had just left the 5cents behind, I can bet there would be someone b*tching that the person only left 5 cents. Either way someone can perceive this as being tight.

I tip when I eat out, but only if service and food is good (if food is bad and i complain and nothing gets done only then no tip and no return visit) - and to be honest most of the time the service is good enough to deserve a tip - but I dislike the expectation that people in the service industry have that they deserve a tip no matter what. I dont think people should have to tip for just standard service. As has been said before, the minimum wage for the service industry is the same as the minimum wage for any other job here in ireland - so why do some people deserve extra for just doing their job when others dont. A tip should be a bit of a bonus and not something expected - especially when times are hard like this. Why should someone who can afford to pay the bill for what they have had not eat out because they cant afford to give the person something extra for just doing their job.

And yes I have worked in the service industry and I never expected a tip! I also have refused to pay a service charge that was automatically added to the bill once or twice - but that was when the service was completely attrocious, the food was awful, complaints were made and nothing was done about it.

Tipping bad service in irish pubs/cafes/restarauts because you feel you have to just creates some warped view of what constitutes good service, if you tip bad servers its validating that poor service.

    look at the other side of the coin... people stop tipping and the waiters have no incentive to go the extra yard. I am a waiter, been doing it for a few years now and i have to say that the biggest difference that the "recession" has made is the attitude of the customer. A willingness to complain, make a scene and expect to get things for free. All of the incidents i've seen are easily rectifiable, for example;
    "there's tomato in my salad"
"would you like a fresh one with no tomato?"
    "i'm not paying for this!"
    "....i'll get a manager...."

I work hard, I work 4 days a week (hours vary depending on business), every friday, saturday and sunday night into the small hours, we don't get breaks on most of the long shifts, and get no compensation for having to work anti-social hours. Are people really saying that it's insane expecting a tip from a table that you've looked after, because they don't have to tip? i don't get massive amounts of tips anymore, but people used to always leave something, 2-3 euro, now that's disappearing.

    Fook you Eddie Hobbs

You've managed to upset hard working service staff all over Ireland.

There's a way to haggle, farmers know how to do it and you go straight to the bossman, the owner.

Screaming at minimum wage staff achieves nothing :(

This was more a year or two ago but some customers still use it

I tip for meals out all the time usually a waiter/waitress will be very helpfull and friendly so a tip is not too much to ask.

I never tip taxi drivers, I don't like them 99% of them are moany hooers

I don't tip delivery drivers as they didn't cook my food, the people in their kitchen did.

    Waiters generally don't cook either.

I worked behind the counter all through college.

I don't see why people have a mindset about tipping people in the service industry in Ireland. Tips don't form part of the wages, it's just a nice extra that's not necessary. People generally don't tip the checkout person in Tesco or the plumber who fixes a toilet or whatever. When I regularly got taxis I used to tip the driver as he always looked after me on a Saturday night. Basically I was paying for an extra level of service.

On the whole "keep the change" thing, there's nothing mean about 10 cents. I'd have loved to have got 10 cents on all the pints I served over the years.

I tip good bartenders/waiters who provide excellent service and add to the quality of an evening out. Not just because they filled their job requirements.

First they came for the socialists...

In a restaurant I will tip if the service is good, and most of the time it is. If it's good, I tip 10% plus an extra 1-2 euro. I've had very surly waiters/waitresses who forget stuff, roll their eyes etc and I'm always being slagged for being too nice to people like that, so it's certainly nothing I'm doing that causes that attitude. In those cases, they get no tip.

In somewhere like Costa, Insomnia etc I always get a take away coffee so I usually just throw the change in the tip jar (50 cents maybe?)

I tip delivery drivers 2euro, except for the thai delivery because their delivery charge is really expensive!

I pay a lot for my hair so hairdressers doesn't get a tip.

I'll tip the local hackney drivers, but not the taxi drivers as they are a rip off in comparison.

I worked in a bar for ages in Germany where i got paid 2.50 an hour and tips were mine to keep. So I had to work extra hard for them as Germans are notoriously stingy with that kind of thing. Think round of drinks for 10 people, with 20 cent tip. Although one night I wore a tight tshirt and got a 30euro tip. I wore that tshirt almost every shift after that!!

I always tip in a restaurant, minimum a fiver maximum 6-7e depending on if there's 2 or 4 of us.

I work in a restaurant and am very surprised at how tight ppl are; I've had large enough tables spending 100-200e and pay by card and not leave a tip - I think they think they can use that as an excuse not to leave a tip. We don't do service charges for large booking because we want to entice ppl in and not deter them!

Also, I've had people say keep the change or share it with the staff and it's 15cents!!! I throw it in the charity box on the counter.

Also, had had a few customers stand there and wait for their 5cents change while I'm waiting to use the till... If you bill comes to 79.95 and you give me 80 you should be embarrassingly trying to get out the door asap, not stand there waiting for your change!

 What kind of logic is that?

Why don't you knock off 5c and give them 10c change back then if it's a thing of nothing?

Eh no....actually you don't know the circumstances of why they are out at that meal.

There are many reasons to do so beyond just personal enjoyment.

i tip if they deserve a tip

doing your job does not deserve a tip, doing your job deserves your wage

go beyond that, and you'll get a tip

I only tip if the service has been beyond my expectations, I don't really believe in the practice if I'm honest its an American staple that should not be encouraged in our parts.

    It ain't Irish is it.
It's not like the US where service workers get a very small wage and rely on customer tips to bring it up to minimum wage levels.
We have a minimum wage in this country, all tipping did afaic is raise the cost of living further. It is completely unrequired.
And yes I've worked in the service industry.

Completely agree... I don't earn much more than minimum... I work with the public and I don't get tipped so why should I pay them more on top of whatever the meal is for their wages when they already get money? Obviously if it is amazing service I will tip as a thank you but as a general rule I don't.

Only a real tight ass does not tip something after eating with good service.

    Simple as that.

Em... some people (me) can`t afford to tip. Its not that I wouldn`t like to and I did all the time when I had money but now I don`t. I`m under no illusions about my finances - I don`t have the money to tip.

    thats shockingly mean

Especially as that poster reckons that up to 15c is beneath them and the 5c would go to charity.

The problem I have with tips is that it's often expected for the basics of doing their job - do you tip your mechanic or web designer or when you're served at McDonalds or the corner shop ?

Have you stopped tipping in these difficult finacial times or reduce the amount you tip? Or did you ever tip in the first place? Waitresses, food delivery drivers, taxi drivers ect

I've noticed when in certain friends company when ordering food or dining out or ordering a drink how mean some of them are by just avoiding tipping and saying 'sure they're getting paid to do it, why should i prop up their wages?' or 'they're lucky to have a job'. Bad form in my book

I don't get tipped in my job when I deliver more (which is often).

However, for very good service I'll always tip (not a huge tip)....

    Can't afford it, simple as.

If eating out, between five and ten euro tip.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,194 ✭✭✭saa

I don't think tipping is fair I would rather work somewhere without worrying about having to make enough tips just to make sure all my bills are paid or having to be pissed off because someone didn't tip me or if they do then in a lot of places the tips get split and it just causes tension for the workers and customers..but I can absolutely understand looking at the minimum wages in the US why tipping is such a big deal over there, I don't mind paying a bit extra but I don't like the idea of rewarding someone with money they are meant to be providing good service anyway.

    €7 uk
    €8.65 Ire
    €5.80 US

The hardest worker in the restaurant is the kitchen porter and the kitchen could not function without them.
    Messy, horrible job

Yet the person who takes the orders and carries the plates get the tips

Something not right about this :(

I tip when eating out if the service is good. Usually leave pretty big tips. I work in a bar/restaurant myself during the summer and count on my tips to pay for college.

I leave a bit of change in the jar at cafes.

Usually tip the hairdresser between €5-10.

    Never really tip taxi drivers.

    That's it really.
