Have you stopped tipping in these difficult finacial times or reduce the amount you tip? Or did you ever tip in the first place? Waitresses, food delivery drivers, taxi drivers ect

I've noticed when in certain friends company when ordering food or dining out or ordering a drink how mean some of them are by just avoiding tipping and saying 'sure they're getting paid to do it, why should i prop up their wages?' or 'they're lucky to have a job'. Bad form in my book

I have the same attitude as I always had. If I get good service I'll tip, if it's sh1te, then I won't.

If it's in a pub and its a drink, I usually give the small change (be it 20c or 99c)
In a restaurant it will really depend on how long I'm there!

i always tip people remember you if you throw 2 euros into a cup you get better service this is a fact after all...

only in cafes and restaurants because i sued to work in it and well leaving a tip just makes the day barable

but if i spend 70 quid on a meal for 2 and the every things ticked boo il drop a 10 they deserve it I've enjoyed my self...

I always tip in a restaurant, minimum a fiver maximum 6-7e depending on if there's 2 or 4 of us.

I work in a restaurant and am very surprised at how tight ppl are; I've had large enough tables spending 100-200e and pay by card and not leave a tip - I think they think they can use that as an excuse not to leave a tip. We don't do service charges for large booking because we want to entice ppl in and not deter them!

Also, I've had people say keep the change or share it with the staff and it's 15cents!!! I throw it in the charity box on the counter.

Also, had had a few customers stand there and wait for their 5cents change while I'm waiting to use the till... If you bill comes to 79.95 and you give me 80 you should be embarrassingly trying to get out the door asap, not stand there waiting for your change!

I usually always tip, and I most certainly wouldn't be waiting around for 5c, but people don't have to tip.

As I am typing this, I do recall ONCE I didn't tip. There was a sign up in a restaurant by the till and it said Tipping is not a city in china. That just bugged the sh1t outta me so I didn't tip!

Re: Service charges in restaurants, is it not still the case that customers are not obliged to pay a service charge?

Money is money and you shouldn't be judging people if they wait for their change, you don't know their circumstances...

Perhaps they didn't think you deserved a tip??

    Just a possibility.

So for normal bookings there is a service charge AND an expected tip.
You wish to entice people to enter as they wont need to pay service charge and you expect them to pay a different type of service charge because of that........
    Right.
    :)

We are off to the states in a couple of months. Tipping there is a total mine field!!
Some of the restaurants print the 'suggested amount' at the bottom of the bill which does help!

Cow Tipping is a myth perpetuated by city slickers and if you were a real country bumpkin you would know that...

    FRAUD!

I don't know but I know some restaurants charge it for groups of 6+ whilst others are over 10 and the charge is between 10-15%

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,431 ✭✭✭Sky King

No that's a service charge for a large table.

I always tell them I'll just pop into the kitchen and collect it myself instead, the greedy bastids. Doesn't work though.

I'm no 100% and I'm open to correction, but I'm almost sure that a customer can refuse to pay the service charge.

I've yet to hear a good reason as to why anyone should tip unless the person goes above and beyond whats expected of their job but otherwise screw that.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 31,117 ✭✭✭✭snubbleste

    It ain't Irish is it.
It's not like the US where service workers get a very small wage and rely on customer tips to bring it up to minimum wage levels.
We have a minimum wage in this country, all tipping did afaic is raise the cost of living further. It is completely unrequired.
And yes I've worked in the service industry.

Ah sh1t..., I never tip the delivery guy! The take away is less than 5mins away and they charge me 2.50 for waiting almost an hour and delivering me tepid food!

Ever consider they didnt enjoy themselves and you didnt deserve a tip?

or perhaps they didnt have any change with them, has happened to me on plenty of occasions as i very rarely carry cash. Believe me it is embarrassing for the customer when they would like to leave a tip, but its not the first thing I think of when we decide to go somewhere for a meal.

That's been said and answered, but I think there's a higher possibility of ppl being tight than our service been that poor!

Also, if you don't have change you can:
    (a) get change from the people you are with
    (b) get change from the person serving you
    (c) get cash back from your laser card

It's not rocket science or too difficult to do!!!

when i see some guy serving drinks most likely after school/college i'll throw him a euro or two, i did it myself and tips makes a little more worth while, if he brings me a round down to the table i'll tip him as i find you get a better prefernce of service when the pub is busy.

most delivery drivers are on a bout 4 euro an hour, i know i've done it and with the price of petrol they dont make much even at 1.50 a drop

and if ya dont got it then dont tip i suppose but leaving a nice person a nice tip for good service has a feel good factor too but everyone is different i guess

i normally do tip in a restaurant, as long as the service isn't really bad. as for taxi drivers, not really . don't get them that much.

She's from the city but mainly feels that I shouldn't give a tip when we've had poor service (most places have less staff and you can see they are stretched or else they want you in and out so they can get their table back). I just do it anyway because I feel obliged to give at least a fiver.

I actually don't like being served to the table in a pub when its a hot bar maid.

usually there is only 20cent change or something so don't want to say keep it.

and then id feel like im insulting her handing her a euro when she comes down with the drinks.
