    Hi Sue,
I sent a registered letter to <snip>'s Dublin address and included any info I thought they might need - date of operation, last address, current address, date of birth, name of surgeon, clinic/hospital where op took place etc. Took about 3 weeks for them to send them out, also rang them every couple of days asking why I hadn't received them yet.

Thanks evergreen girl, I will get onto that straight away, I did request it several times over the phone but they still haven't gotten back to me yet, but that I suppose is typical of them. Thanks again :)

    Hi Ladies,

Id like to thank kyra, jenny and all the incredible brave women. I am also a PIP implant sufferer and feel i had to let you all know the incredibly disturbing info i found out today. I had my PIPs in <snip>, and thankfully i have had an MRI and no rupture. However after much soul searching and chatting to my husband I decided i cannot live with the risk and want them out asap.

I went to see <snip> in <snip>. The very first thing i asked him was did you use PIP implants. after he muttered <snip> does not use them , i asked him again did you ever use them. he admitted he HAD. i was horrified. The girls on the phone in <snip> told me they did not use PIPS but their surgeon had!!! anyway after much digging i have discovered ther following:

<snip> worked in <snip> and <snip> in the past. BOTH HAVE USED PIPS. Please ladies be careful about what people are telling you. I also found out <snip> has operated in <snip>- another clinic claiming not to use PIPS but their surgeons must have. I had to let you all know. I cant believe this it all feels like a scam

If i would have know i would never ever have gone with them and we need to warn young girls thinking of having this op. im sorry for Venting, im so frustrated. I found a clinic in <snip> that have said their surgeons never used PIPs so im meeting them next week, fingers crossed. Good luck to you all xxxx

    Hey everyone,
Just wondering where you are all going , or have gone, to get your MRI scans. I live in the midlands and everywhere I'm ringing don't seem to do chest ones. <snip> told me that they are in the process of setting theirs up but I'l prob have to wait 2 weeks.
I don't really want to wait that long because I have been getting pains in my chest for a long time now but now they seem to be getting worse. I don't no whether I'm just being paranoid about it or if its something more serious.
Still havent gotten any response from <snip>. No surprises there really. I sent a letter requesting my medical records so I wonder how long that will take them.I threatened them with a solicitor if I didnt get them in a week.Don't think it will make a difference.

My wife has been complaining about a pain in her breast for a while so was quite shocked when all this came out. lumps have started appearing around her body. The doctor has sent fir a scan weeks ago but still no appointment. Please help

    Hi Jessiebelle,
unfortunately I think you are going to have to travel for an MRI - the only places any of us have been to for a breast MRI seem to be <snip>, <snip> and <snip> and regardless of where you book, you will prob be waiting a week or two for an appointment.

Try not to worry about the pains in your chest - maybe go to your GP and have a chat with them, as the pains may be unrelated to your implants (fingers crossed :)) and the visit might leave you a little bit less worried until you can get an MRI. I think we are all with you re being paranoid about any twinges or pains around our breasts which is perfectly normal and understandable considering we have industrial/agricultural silicone in our implants!

    Hi there,
Completely understand your reason for wanting them out, we all feel exactly the same believe me. If I had the money I'd get them out now!Hmm interesting about <snip> alright, trying to get business for his company <snip> alright, of course <snip> have never used PIPS, but he has.
I wonder if he did any of the <snip> or <snip> breast augmentation procedures on any of the girls here as well as the <snip> girls? Well he's proposing to replace our (<snip> girls) implants for €1800 with another French product called Eurosilicone (having a laugh or what?!). Good luck with your appointment next week, I can tell you <snip> will quote you €3500 for removal and replacement (and they're using an FDA approved implant also which is great news for you):)
Thanks for posting and please keep doing so.

    Hi ozzymcd,
As one of the other girls said a Breast MRI can be carried out in the Bacon in Dublin you need a referal letter from her surgeon or GP to get an appointment. It cost about €350-€417 (that s what I was told)
But before you spend that much money have a look at Pixiejanes post in the last few day. She has spoken with a friend who is married to a surgeon, it might help with the MRI vs ultrasound decision you have to make.
If you decide to go ahead with the MRI in <snip> the phone number is: <snip>

    Hope that helps a little.

    Afternoon ladies,
Came across this article today which makes for interesting reading. I'm going to email it to our useless Minister for Health and ask him why nothing has been done about this, and surely they can't wait until November this year to even think about it!!

No mention of defective products either being regulated/approved by the Irish Medical Board either!

    minister's_office@health.irlgov.ie

Here's the response I got to my letter on 27th Jan 2012, same as Kyra's, still quoting the same bull

    Dear Ms ,
I refer to your recent letter concerning P.I.P. Breast Implants.
Since concerns were first raised regarding the issue of breast implants provided by the now defunct French company Poly Implant Prosthese (PIP) the Irish Medicines Board (IMB) and the Department of Health have been in constant touch with European and UK investigators of the matter and with any relevant initiative involved. As information on PIP implantation worldwide and within the European Community emerges, the Department and the IMB are continuing to review advice for recipients of PIP implants. The advice remains consistent: that there is no evidence to date of increased risk of cancer for women with this brand of implant, the risk of rupture is low and anyone with a concern about their breast implants should discuss the matter with their GP and/or surgeon.
As you may be aware, approximately 1,500 Irish patients have received PIP breast implants at three centres in Ireland. The IMB has been in regular contact with the three centres and instructed all three to contact their clients on the matter and to reiterate its continuing advice: 'that there is no current evidence of health risks associated with PIP implants'. The Minister expects that any private hospital in Ireland which provided a PIP breast implant procedure would provide for its removal should that course of action be recommended for a woman after consulting with her surgeon.
The Department and the IMB continue to liaise with the EU Health Security Committee's Health Threats Unit which is maintaining the up to date position on the issue for all Member States. The Minister is satisfied that all relevant emerging information and updates on the PIP implant issue are being thoroughly assessed and all concerned and interested parties kept aware of the emerging position.
I trust that this clarifies the matter for you and suggest that you consult further with your surgeon having regard to the above position.
    Yours sincerely

    Stephen Doran
    Private Secretary

We got a call from a certain consultants secretary today. It will be" 6 weeks b4 he can see her' and then she said 'he will decide then if she will have a scan'. My wife said she was extremely rude and kept stressing about the €200 consultants fee plus the scan. It is not down to the money now It seems they can say anything to you because you have no other choice.
We will try to get an MRI and ultrasound whichever is sooner as <snip> said they will accept the ultrasound.
Where can we get an ultrasound done PLEASE as this is so stressing on my wife's behalf and the pain is getting worse

Finally got confirmation that I have PIP implants! <snip> only let me know because I requested my medical records. No cover letter to state that I had PIP's I had to trawl through lots of pages and eventually found details on the operation sheet. As I was searching through I noticed someone had decided to scribble notes about other patients on one of the pages of my records. It confirmed one girl had a rupture, another had not and gave a name and adress of another patient! How unprofessional is that! What ever happened to keeping patient names confidential! I was shocked when I saw it.
Has anyone received a letter from LavelleColeman in relation to fees? It reads a bit scary and seems there is a strong possibility that we could end up footing the legal bills for the defendent if we loose! Abit unsure and scared as to how to proceed now as I do not have that kind of money!

Dont wait that long ozzy if she is that upset trust me its just torture. Go to the GP get a referal letter and go to <snip> to get a scan. The women told me (2 wks ago ) that she could have me an appointment in 4 days. Trust me better just to get the scan and have a little peace of mind. Lots of clinics are not doing the ultrasound for us girls anymore but I know <snip> will do it, they are great up there well up to date on the PIP issue. I hope this helps a little. (I just called my gp and she left a referal letter for me to pick up)

Quick question whilst on the subject of scans!! Iv appointment to see breast surgeon (<snip>) next wk, Think Im due to get Mammogram, has anyone else seen surgeon in <snip> or indeed had a Mammogram there, worried about the pressure this type of scan will put on implant if I have a rupture?????

  • Registered Users Posts: 137 ✭✭Pixiejane

    Hi there Catch,
An ultrasound or an MRI scan are the two most effective scans for us ladies to get. According to that European report (the latest report on the IMB's website) the specialists are saying that a mammogram is useless in this particular situation. So maybe give <snip> a call and discuss this, and ask about ultrasound or MRI. If that fails, contact <snip> in <snip> and try get an appointment there. Hope this helps you.

    Morning Ladies,

How are you all doing today? Well I came back from a nice walk last night and tried to read that lengthy report on the IMB's website. What a nightmare trying to trawl through it. Kyra has got a friend who can help us understand in layman's terms I think. :)
Anyway I sat at my PC at home and began to read through it and was absolutely sick to my stomach just reading the composition of the implants we all have. I haven't cried in about 4 weeks and was feeling really down about it all last night, and just sat there and cried while trying to read it.:( Didn't sleep very well either.
Today though I'm just glad it's Friday and I've got my head together again, but I'm filled with anger and frustration at this whole situation and how these surgeons/clinics think they can just sit back and do nothing to help us except ask for more money:mad: and hope we'll all just go away. They all have some level of responsibility in what's been done to us, in the defective product they used on us, and their attitudes and bully boy behaviour towards us is totally uncalled for and unacceptable, not to mention unprofessional and against their code of ethics. All the other clinics jumping on the band wagon as well, "oh come to us, we've never used PIPs, we'll gladly take your money", and then the solicitor now looking for outlay costs of €750 per person. That's some amount of money for outlay costs and that's before any work is done. Oh I'm fit to be put in a rubber room!!!!!
Oh girls I want blood at this stage, and will gladly swing for any one of them (surgeons/clinics) right now, rant over. Going for coffee.
    Please stay strong xx

    Hi Pippy12,
<snip> are indeed so unprofessional to disclose another patients personal business!!! I recieved my medical notes from them too, But I searched through them with a fine tooth comb and not one mention of PIP on the notes???? I have been told they used them at the time of my augmentation???Where did you find PIP mentioned??? thanks.

    <snip>

Saulite I also received this mail yesterday and also the letter about fees it's pretty scary stuff as if we havent got enough to worry about!

Pippy12 sorry to hear that you have the dreaded implants, hope you are ok and trying to keep positive at least now you know unfortunately I know that doesnt stop the worrying. I cant believe how unprofessional <snip> are that they would have another patients info on your records, what are they playing at??

Jean08 I think your right we're just guinea pigs to these guys they have no idea what the implication of these implants are, theyre just going to sit around and wait til something serious changes things, they just dont care at all about all the innocent woman who are living everyday with this and not knowing what the future holds or how we can afford to have them removed.

Well I finally got some sort of confirmation today, I rang <snip> as that helpline is useless. I had sent them a letter yesterday requesting my medical files and just wanted to follow it up with a phone call. The receptionist told me the shes 99% sure that I have them and I can take it that I do. She said that anyone who had implants with them between 2000 and Jan 2010 would have received Pip implants except for a few cases where the patient needed a more specific implant for a problem with their breast and then a different brand wouldve been ordered for them.

I think like the girls are saying we need to stay strong as a group and keep this in the public eye for as long as we can. I feel like storming the clinic and telling them that I'm not leaving until they sort this mess out for all of us because we're not going away and that by the time we've finished they'll be lucky if they still have a clinic in this country because their reputation will be in tatters. Im just so angry:mad::mad:

I just want to say thanks to everyone on here though, you are all a great support, just reading everyones thoughts and knowing we are all in the 1 boat helps!!!:)

    Hi Everyone,
had a read of the report today - very informative and interesting report. Obviously its not a very conclusive report as there hasn't been enough testing of the implants carried out but I think it's important to note that they cannot conclude that there is no health risk from these implants.

"The limited clinical data, along with the absence of epidemiologic data on PIP silicone breast implants provide insufficient evidence to warrant a conclusion that women with PIP silicone breast implants have a greater risk to their health than women with breast implants from other manufacturers. In regard to breast implants in general there is, a reasonable number of large, good-quality studies showing no increase in any cancer type or connective tissue disease among women with standard silicone breast implants (including women with ruptured implants). However, in the case of PIP implants, when the limited available clinical information is taken together with the findings from tests of the physical and chemical properties of the shell and silicone, and of the in vivo irritancy test, some concerns are raised about the safety of PIP silicone breast implants as the possibility for health effects cannot be ruled out.
Further work is proposed to establish with greater certainty the health risks, if any, that may be associated with PIP silicone breast implants."
(Taken from the abstract of the report)

I agree with the sentiment of the other girls in that I am not willing to be a guinea pig, leave the implants in for a few more years and see what happens. I think the fact that the study cannot conclude that there is no risk is sufficient to warrant the removal of these implants.

I cannot believe the IMB is not taking this more seriously . I presume they are just waiting to see what the UK will do and then act!

I was the same as you last night Pixiejane stayed up reading that huge report start to finish it was not as helpful as I thought it would be to us girls. It does say in the report though (sorry I can find the quote right now but i will that) the cases must be heard by surgeons on an individual case basis, so girls your going to have to fight fight fight at your appointments take no crap at all, keeping pulling it back to consumer law.

I woke up this morning with full on determination head on. We have to stand up united and starting fighting for these implants to be removed from us. Otherwise the clinic s are just going to try to wear us down until we go away and pay for it to be done ourselves.
So please pass the petition on to all you know, like the facebook page and send it on.

I was so annoyed last night I could nt post today I am not much better. I finally got my medical records from <snip> because I went to the <snip> and demanded them.
When They were opened the before and after photo s of my breasts were missing. I ask where they were and I was told by the staff that they did know they were nt in my original file. I call them yesterday to follow up, They had not done a thing to locate them. A follow up sheet from July 2009 when I visited them with the complaint of pain in my breast was also missing.
I was then told by the nurse on the phone that my photos must be with the surgeon WHO NO LONGER WORKS FOR THE COMPANY. I reminded her of the patient form I signed which clearly states that the photo s are the property of <snip> and will not be removed from my file without my written consent which I never gave. I asked her to call the surgeon, locate them, return them to my file and for him to distroy the copies he has, also to forward me the complaints address for their <snip> head office and confirmation that my requests have been done.

The mail I got back oh my god I could nt believe it. In a nut shell the surgeon wants me to write to him to explain why i want the photo s distroyed that he has, he will then forward it to his medical insurance and they will then make a decision. I was also only given the name of the clinic manager in <snip> to complain to and told that their is no paper copy in my file for my visit in 2009.
Who is watching these clinics? They seem to do what every they please?Date protection agency will be getting a complaint from me about their lack of regard for my medical file. Did nt think they could get any worse silly me.... sorry huge rant over... just wanted to warn you all about the files, make sure to check all information is in yours that should be there.:(

    Hi Pippy12,
HMG are indeed so unprofessional to disclose another patients personal business!!! I recieved my medical notes from them too, But I searched through them with a fine tooth comb and not one mention of PIP on the notes???? I have been told they used them at the time of my augmentation???Where did you find PIP mentioned??? thanks.

    Hi Catch
If you look at the <snip> operation sheet you should find it there somewhere. Mine was located at very bottom of page it looks like two stickers (hard to tell with photocopy), in teeny tiny writing you can see P.I.P. -La Seyne Sur Mer - France. Hope this helps.
They are unreal! in one section it says my implants are under the muscle and on another page it says they are over the muscle, so I have no idea where my implants are even positioned!!
