    Any particular reason?

I've yet to hear a good reason as to why anyone should tip unless the person goes above and beyond whats expected of their job but otherwise screw that.

    It ain't Irish is it.
It's not like the US where service workers get a very small wage and rely on customer tips to bring it up to minimum wage levels.
We have a minimum wage in this country, all tipping did afaic is raise the cost of living further. It is completely unrequired.
And yes I've worked in the service industry.

    Food delivery 2 euro,
Hot bar service girl the odds
    Restaurant 5 euro
    Taxi man unknown!! (usually pissed)

Ah sh1t..., I never tip the delivery guy! The take away is less than 5mins away and they charge me 2.50 for waiting almost an hour and delivering me tepid food!

I work in a restaurant and am very surprised at how tight ppl are; I've had large enough tables spending 100-200e and pay by card and not leave a tip - I think they think they can use that as an excuse not to leave a tip.

Ever consider they didnt enjoy themselves and you didnt deserve a tip?

or perhaps they didnt have any change with them, has happened to me on plenty of occasions as i very rarely carry cash. Believe me it is embarrassing for the customer when they would like to leave a tip, but its not the first thing I think of when we decide to go somewhere for a meal.
    07438991 wrote: »
Also, I've had people say keep the change or share it with the staff and it's 15cents!!! I throw it in the charity box on the counter.

Also, had had a few customers stand there and wait for their 5cents change while I'm waiting to use the till... If you bill comes to 79.95 and you give me 80 you should be embarrassingly trying to get out the door asap, not stand there waiting for your change!

Thats being tight alright but some people will say its their money and they can do with it as they please

That's been said and answered, but I think there's a higher possibility of ppl being tight than our service been that poor!

Also, if you don't have change you can:
    (a) get change from the people you are with
    (b) get change from the person serving you
    (c) get cash back from your laser card

It's not rocket science or too difficult to do!!!

when i see some guy serving drinks most likely after school/college i'll throw him a euro or two, i did it myself and tips makes a little more worth while, if he brings me a round down to the table i'll tip him as i find you get a better prefernce of service when the pub is busy.

most delivery drivers are on a bout 4 euro an hour, i know i've done it and with the price of petrol they dont make much even at 1.50 a drop

and if ya dont got it then dont tip i suppose but leaving a nice person a nice tip for good service has a feel good factor too but everyone is different i guess

Like every drink you give him 1 or 2e?

Also, I feel that women waitresses get more tips in general...! Does any1 agree?

i normally do tip in a restaurant, as long as the service isn't really bad. as for taxi drivers, not really . don't get them that much.

She's from the city but mainly feels that I shouldn't give a tip when we've had poor service (most places have less staff and you can see they are stretched or else they want you in and out so they can get their table back). I just do it anyway because I feel obliged to give at least a fiver.

I actually don't like being served to the table in a pub when its a hot bar maid.

usually there is only 20cent change or something so don't want to say keep it.

and then id feel like im insulting her handing her a euro when she comes down with the drinks.

any of these people that dont tip, ever work in the service industry, wait tables, deliver food or server drinks? i doubt it

The majority of the service i have received in ireland has been average at best, added to the fact that the staff are on a decent minimum wage im not tipping unless i feel they have made an effort. As somebody already said tipping is an amercan custom were the person serving you is paid a low wage and the tips help to top up the pay and as such the service in the states is generally superb as the staff rely on the extra money.

Tipping bad service in irish pubs/cafes/restarauts because you feel you have to just creates some warped view of what constitutes good service, if you tip bad servers its validating that poor service.

if it brought down to me, keep the change out of the fiver but if i'm not in rounds i go to the bar so its rarely that would happen

I never tip taxi driver because they always start the meter on 5-6e and take a detour. Also, I know some ppl who are taxi on the side whilst claiming social welfare - they will never know how many people you have driven or hours you have worked!!

i dont disagree with a word of that but i wouldnt be mean just for the sake of it either. your tip will buy you a smile or preference of being served first, service is bad no tip then which is right

If you wait for 5cents change or it means that much to you, you shouldn't be having dinner out in my opinion!!![/QUOTE]

well then maybe they shouldnt be going out then and spending money

Judging people on this is foolish. People should be able to eat out if they want and not be ridiculed by the greedy when they don't tip. Maybe you should understand customer service and the fact that you get tipped for going beyond your duties. Don't expect tips for simply taking an order and serving. That happens to be your job.

    fair enough...

h nah i do get you but some places are just **** too, and three nothing worse then not enough staff and having food sitting on the pass it makes me angry...

What change out of a fiver? Most pubs I drink in are 4.85 for a pint and some posh pubs in the city centre are even over a fiver! Got a rock shandy in a normal pub and was charged 5.30!
