Fcuking knuckle draggers ruined that car. It was a really tidy example until it got superlite'd..

Does anyone remember this car, it had a darkish colour?

Dark red? It rings a bell.

There were plenty of import W114/5 cars in the early to mid '80s. Mostly UK sourced.

Old mercs are fine. Well screwed together cars with tough engines. They just don't have any character. They are all basically the same design just bigger or smaller or with different headlights.

Is it because when the guys that drive them now were younger to own a Merc back then meant you had made it in the world? Mercedes were always expensive in this country.
Where as Mercedes nowadays just doesn't have the kudos in Ireland that it did back in the 70s.

This says something about the relative wealth in this country still.
In the early 90s for example, if someone got themselves a 3 year old mercedes, it stood out and you could be sure that guy was very well off. Now, a new E Class isnt even noticed.

Well if I came across someone parked between two spaces right outside a supermarket you'd be inclined to find my car up on the kerb and 1 inch from your driver's door.

Either that, or parked across the back your car. I often take 2 spaces, but I go as far away from the entrance as I can, where there are plenty of spaces.

You can do that of course, but then I don't think you would drive your car far with empty tyres ;) ... can you imagine yourself realizing a simple fact, that your smart move was actually the dumbest decision of the day  ? ...

This was some lazy afternoon when the car park was half empty (and these parking spaces are just too small... which means I rather leave space for my passenger and I won't be worried in the shop that some stupid washed idiot will slam his door to my beloved Scimitar - and believe me, if I will see somebody doing anything to that car I'm ready to break bones), so no need for unnecessarily stupid behaviour. And... are we talking just about parking right?

Do you own a classic car just btw.? If so, you would maybe understand that it is not only about showing off, but there is also a safety reason.

Re: most of the above, I doubt you're serious but if you are I'd get rid of the car because you'll end up getting fined / convicted a lot, which will make owning it a fiscally impossible proposition.

Wow, half the spaces empty outside a supermarket? - can't say I've found that (ever) myself

It doesn't matter what I drive ... absolutely doesn't matter. It has nothing to do with the point I was making, and I'm not going to get into a penis measuring contest with you, but thanks anyway :)

It's more likely someone will damage your car out of belligerence than anything if they find that there are 'no' spaces and you're taking two right outside a particular establishment ... can't be walking between aisles and watching the car too ;)

Last but not least, and while I go along with the parking business under the circumstances outlined in my OP, I wouldn't get too hot and bothered. What I've always found happens is that while you're thinking one thing something else happens ... like a skip lorry reversing into the car when no one's around.

The only truly safe way to own a car is not to drive it at all (even then it could be hit by a stray meteor, mind you)

Saw another chap in a well tyred 'Photography Ireland' or somethinmg on it LR Def. slowing down to gawk at it

    2 ahal:

Is releasing air from tyres a crime? Well, I wouldn't be surprised, because in this country everything is possible :D.

I suppose I should take more pictures next time just in case somebody on internet would need them as a proof, that the car park was almost empty.

You don't get the point I was trying to make with that question (and it is definitely not: I have an old car, you don't). If you would own an old car, which you like and is something you really enjoy to drive, you would probably understand what I meant. It is like taking care of your child. Child can be harmed on every corner anywhere (like a car), and to prevent that, you will make sure to minimalize the risk (which includes to park the car over two spots).

Yes, parking the car in the dumbest possible way is not clever, but it is even more stupid to think about blocking or creating even more idiotic situation than it was already created by a driver who wants to make sure his old car won't be damaged by an average washed driver (which doesn't care about anything parked next to him).

? I never mentioned whether I do or not

That anyone who doesn't own an old car is worthy of lesser consideration because you don't want your car scratched?

    .... looking like that alright.

Quite clearly you're saying that because you own an older car your needs are superior to the average 'unwashed driver' (presume 'washed' is a typo) ... so your rights on the roads are different because you drive an older car  Sorry, but I don't respect that and I suspect that most people wouldn't. That's why we get so much road rage.

Lads, a bit less talk about anti-social parking, blocking other cars, letting air out of someone elses tyres and really, damaging property or assaulting people.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,318 ✭✭✭✭carchaeologist

While I totally agree and understand about minding your car and taking steps to avoid it being scratched and damaged, parking over two spots is taking it too far in my opinion.

Park it away from the busy spots and walk if it means that much.

Possibly, have you a classic at the minute? We were on a run to Clare today, not a bad spin, except for the price of the ferry.:(

Sorry, no pic here but I was in the IFI, Dublin on Saturday to see a documentary called "The Dubliners in The Rare Oul Times", filmed in 1988 it is essentailly Ronnie Drew walking around Dublin talking about the city and the band.

But there is a short clip of him in the Liberties and in it is a Left hand Drive Merc W114/5 with a taxi sign on the roof. ............in a lot of Countries taxis, and especially Limo's can be this way, to allow the driver get out at kerbside and open the door for the passengers quickly.

I recall a friend of my fathers had a navy blue W115 Limo which was LHD for this exact reason.

A lot of taxis in Cork in 50's were lhd yanks, the last left hooker taxi I can remember is a maroon 244 or 264 Volvo auto driven by a neighbor of mine in the 80's, I think he purchased in Germany when he was stationed there with the US military.

And a lot of the Cork yank taxi's were RHD assembled in Ireland from CKDs

This is true, as is evident from the hearses many of them were also converted into.
