going by the sign for "Quick..." in the background, which has an 091 number, it would be the Galway area

Have been over here in Castlebar visiting the family for the last 5 months and finally after 15 years managed to pull my beetle out of my dad's garage and get it on the road. It was put in the garage when I moved to Sydney, Australia back in 1997.

It will go back in the garage next week as I'm returning to Sydney.

    Cheers

Merc 200D W123 on original irish reg just outside Athlone today.

Slow, but indestructable. I had a 1980 one of these myself, a long time ago. It even had ABS.

    Most definitely!

Look at the arse on it or even just the door handles.

There's one a few minutes up the road from me in someone's garden I haven't had a chance to get a pic yet.

Sorry, no pic here but I was in the IFI, Dublin on Saturday to see a documentary called "The Dubliners in The Rare Oul Times", filmed in 1988 it is essentailly Ronnie Drew walking around Dublin talking about the city and the band.

But there is a short clip of him in the Liberties and in it is a Left hand Drive Merc W114/5 with a taxi sign on the roof. It had the reg 700 DZO or 700 GZO I think which would make it a 1981 import. A bit awkward and unusual to have a LHD as a taxi I would have thought. Does anyone remember this car, it had a darkish colour?

Yep, probably that "look at my car" kind of driver. On the other hand I sometimes do the same with my Scimitar because I don't want it to be scratched by some idiot in old corolla (parking the car over two spots in a half-empty car park etc.)
