What Constitutes a Sport in Your Opinion?

This is derived from a thread on Darts currently doing the rounds on AH. While discussing Darts itself, posters began debating on whether or not Darts is even a sport at all.

Do you believe it's a sport or is it simply a pub game?!

Does the fact it's on Sky Sports indicate it is a sport, after all, WWE and aerobics are on said channel and they are hardly sports?

Does it take an 'athlete' to compete in a sport? Where does this leave Race car drivers, golfers and bowlers?

I'd like to hear a few opinions on this.

If a girl does not like it, it's a sport.

Is chess a sport? It requires stamina in regards concentration, much like darts, but damn all physical exertion.

    Am I bored?

    Am I in a church?

    Yes, no = sport

If it doesn't require some sort of physical conditioning in preparation then it isn't a sport.

when what you do causes someone to want to cry, but they dont do so until they are at home, that's a sport.

If it's with your wife you need to learn that you will always lose

Anything that requires doing something that doesn't need to be done.

    I hate sport.

Something that takes both skill and physical interaction imo

Yes, I believe Darts is a sport.

However, things like Poker are probably not sports.

An argument can be made about darts... and even poker....
But professional wrestling is a sport. Yes, its fake. Yes, its predetermined. But what they do in the ring is physical. Full body range movement and can be physically demanding.

    It is a sport.

Massively wrong I'm afraid. The amount of blood, sweat and tears (I use this term loosely) put into the perfection of the physical aspect of the throw of a dart could certainly be classed as a decent level of "physical exertion" :)

    For a 95 year-old granny with a dicky ticker?

Ask yourself the question, "are the participants wearing shoes?". If the answer is yes, then it's not a sport

A game becomes a sport when you compete.

A sport is when a person does lots of trainning of their sport i.e 3hrs golf, 4hrs snooker... they are not athletes but are sportspeople.

Since you're opposing my opinion, I'm going to assume you're probably not a regular darts player...that's a fair assumption right?

Go play 8 hours of darts tomorrow.

Come back to me the next day and tell me how your right (or left depending on handedness) tricep feels.

No. No it's not. I know its physical, its damn physical. The bumps those lads take are breathtaking. I've watched Pro Wrestling my whole life and consider myself a big fan of it but it is not a sport!! It's predetermined.

You cant bet on it. Actually maybe that's the answer I'm looking for...

Tiring out my triceps by playing 8 minutes of darts wouldn't make it a sport.

When I started out driving my arms used to kill me. That didn't make it a sport.

If a world champion can look like this, it doesn't require much physical exertion

Jensen Button might disagree.... (Not saying I do, though!)

Chess is NOT a sport. WWE isn't either, it's about as much of a sport as coronation street.
I think golf is sport, there's enough variation and skill to it to be considered one.
With darts i'm 50/50 about, I have an app on the phone for scoring games of darts and when I go to use it half the time I end up checking the games folder rather than the sports folder when i'm looking for it
F1 is extremely tough on the body by the way, those guys are very fit (for the people who think it's just a bunch of people out for a drive)

Don't tell me you're one of those who thinks that all a race car driver does is sit down and turn a steering wheel? F1 is one of the mostly physically demanding sports which requires drivers to be a the peak of physically fitness. I dont think there's too many footballers out there who I fancy to win if up against Jenson Button in a tri-athlon.

if you not using your legs or your heart rate doesnt require you to get out of breath it is not a sport
