What Constitutes a Sport in Your Opinion?

This is derived from a thread on Darts currently doing the rounds on AH. While discussing Darts itself, posters began debating on whether or not Darts is even a sport at all.

Do you believe it's a sport or is it simply a pub game?!

Does the fact it's on Sky Sports indicate it is a sport, after all, WWE and aerobics are on said channel and they are hardly sports?

Does it take an 'athlete' to compete in a sport? Where does this leave Race car drivers, golfers and bowlers?

I'd like to hear a few opinions on this.

Is chess a sport? It requires stamina in regards concentration, much like darts, but damn all physical exertion.

    Am I bored?

    Am I in a church?

    Yes, no = sport

If it doesn't require some sort of physical conditioning in preparation then it isn't a sport.

when what you do causes someone to want to cry, but they dont do so until they are at home, that's a sport.

Anything that requires doing something that doesn't need to be done.

    I hate sport.

Something that takes both skill and physical interaction imo

Yes, I believe Darts is a sport.

However, things like Poker are probably not sports.

But professional wrestling is a sport. Yes, its fake. Yes, its predetermined. But what they do in the ring is physical. Full body range movement and can be physically demanding.

    It is a sport.

Massively wrong I'm afraid. The amount of blood, sweat and tears (I use this term loosely) put into the perfection of the physical aspect of the throw of a dart could certainly be classed as a decent level of "physical exertion" :)

A sport is when a person does lots of trainning of their sport i.e 3hrs golf, 4hrs snooker... they are not athletes but are sportspeople.

Since you're opposing my opinion, I'm going to assume you're probably not a regular darts player...that's a fair assumption right?

Go play 8 hours of darts tomorrow.

Come back to me the next day and tell me how your right (or left depending on handedness) tricep feels.

No. No it's not. I know its physical, its damn physical. The bumps those lads take are breathtaking. I've watched Pro Wrestling my whole life and consider myself a big fan of it but it is not a sport!! It's predetermined.

You cant bet on it. Actually maybe that's the answer I'm looking for...

Tiring out my triceps by playing 8 minutes of darts wouldn't make it a sport.

When I started out driving my arms used to kill me. That didn't make it a sport.

If a world champion can look like this, it doesn't require much physical exertion

Chess is NOT a sport. WWE isn't either, it's about as much of a sport as coronation street.
I think golf is sport, there's enough variation and skill to it to be considered one.
With darts i'm 50/50 about, I have an app on the phone for scoring games of darts and when I go to use it half the time I end up checking the games folder rather than the sports folder when i'm looking for it
F1 is extremely tough on the body by the way, those guys are very fit (for the people who think it's just a bunch of people out for a drive)

Don't tell me you're one of those who thinks that all a race car driver does is sit down and turn a steering wheel? F1 is one of the mostly physically demanding sports which requires drivers to be a the peak of physically fitness. I dont think there's too many footballers out there who I fancy to win if up against Jenson Button in a tri-athlon.

People have different opinions on sport. What you should look at are official sports councils. If they have it down as a sport, then it's a sport.

I dont even like sports but ive heard driving over those colored strips at the corners is like taking a kick to the chest, at 150 mph thats demanding.

Sport isn't just about athleticism IMO, there are many factors to consider, such as skill, concentration, dedication and mental toughness - 4 traites that are needed to reach the pinnacle of darts. Anyone who thinks hitting treble 20 after treble 20 is comparable to tiddleywinks hasn't got a breeze.

Believe it or not, as sports people go, F1 Drivers are as fit as they come. Some races like Malaysia or Bahrain, they have to sit in their cars in 50 degree heat, wearing a helmet and fireproof overalls. They can lose up to 5 kilos in weight in these races, so they have to be conditioned to cope with this, and still drive around at 300kph. Most F1 drivers do triathlons and marathons in between races, not just for fun, but because thay have to.

pro wrestling is more like an art form than a sport.

darts is a game, not a sport, same with snooker.

What difference does it make if someone sees something as being a sport or not being a sport; its still going to be the same thing no matter how it's labelled.
There is the whole thing, i suppose, of the practitioners/organisers of certain games/disciplines wanting to recognised as a 'sport' in order to qualify for government grants/perhaps become an event in the Olympics etc.
But on a purely theoritical level it makes no difference; a thing is still the same thing no matter what you call it.

If you bring competitiveness into it. I know what you mean. Since its fake it doesnt have that. While all sports do. (it is funny about wrestling tho :P the real competitive nature comes out backstage :P )

But on the other side of the coin is if darts, poker, snooker and even chess can be classed (or argued ;) ) as sports? ... wrestling ranks more of a sport than them automatcially.

UFC isnt a sport. Although it is funny to hear how hyped its fans get in defending it as if it has any type of merit, it is somewhat concerning that underpants playground fighting that 7 years ago was only watched by burberry wearing illiterate scrotes has now become somewhat mainstream and is even threatening real sports like boxing.

Still, I have a feeling it is a fad and will die off eventually.

    You like it don't you?

Wrestling does classify as a sport at amateur level. Pro Wrestling falls under the sports entertainment heading, the results are predetermined but your kidding yourself if you don't think that high levels of athletic performance and pain are involved.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,243 ✭✭✭LighterGuy

'Pro' wrestling is a ****ing soap show with muscley men who'd get battered by real fighters.

Yes. Generally you are right :) (exception of Brock Lensar. He has proved himself)

But that doesnt take away from the nature of what they do. Pretty much a wrestler is just a stuntman. Pretending to fight, bumping, feeding etc etc. But its still physical.

If one wants to argue how darts, poker or chess is a sport then go for it. But how can someone factual argue that the latter sports require the same or more physical aspects?

No one is saying wrestling is on par with MMA or boxing or anything like that. But give its due at least.

    Well Mister Chuck Stone,
    Take a look at this:

Although wrestling is fake, this injury isn't. These are the physical dangers of wrestling. But you are probably thinking this was a once off freak accident right? ... I could post ten more examples if you like.

Get in a ring and take a few bumps, let somebody work stiff on you and come back to me and tell me its fake.

Never was into wrestling, but here's an example of a couple of great athletes from another sport guesting in a wrestling match.

Whether WWF/WWE style should be regarded as a 'sport' of not, personally it think the phrase 'sports entertainment' fits it, there's no denying that its top practioners are real athletes.
This whole discussion also reminds me a documentary i watched where Louis Theroux questioned some lunatic involved in wrestling about its authenticity and then later made the mistake of turning up and agreeing to take part in a training session under his stewardship:

The pain begins at about the 9:30 minute mark. :D

I'd call chess a pursuit. For me, a sport is something where physical exertion comes before anything cerebral.

Although horse racing isn't a sport; it's a vehicle for gambling.
