I think unexpected file format means that the type of file you are trying to open does not have the correct file extension for SW, for example; assembly.sldasm would be the actual name of your "assembly", so if you renamed it to be "assembly.sldassm" then Solidworks won't be able to open it. Either that or you made your main part on SW 2011 and tried to open it with an earlier version of SW like SW 2009.

EDIT: I just re-checked the brief, if you made your project with Solidworks 2011 you no doubt are going to have to re-build it in school on 2009 version. As I said before however, ask your teacher if you can bring your laptop into school so you can refer to it for measurements and such.

He could have made it in school, opened it at home, then saved it as he was clicking close, happened to someone I know.

I suppose the examiners know that some schools only have 2009 version to work with and therefore they don't want to give some schools the advantage of working with 2011 version which has more features.

As for the guy you know, ouch!

It's supposed to be on a CD. I highly doubt they would give a shít if it was on a DVD though.

Ah just get a CD-RW 700mb

It says "CD" on the brief, CD's are cheaper than DVDs and using a DVD would be a wast of 4gb space because all you need is a few mb.

Wasn't a problem really, tons of backups on our servers. I think two different lads in the class lost usb keys too. I'm in a class of Idiots haha, theres one guy who basically shows everyone else how to do their project.

I'm not sure if you can copy features over, BUT you can copy sketches from one file to another, and I have done so occasionally. Here's the thing though, I'd be guessing you used Solidworks 2011 to make your project on your laptop, if the version of SW on your school computer is still in 2010 or 2009 then you will not even be able to open your work on the school computers.

I'll see Monday, I'll see how much I can copy over. But like ye said, at this stage we all should be very familiar with the ins and outs of our cad models so redrawing won't be a disaster! Thanks though. Really had a mini panic attack

for something that's so easy to rake in a potential 45 cao points, you don't wanna mess it up. Btw, I used SW 2010 in school and also at home! My part B modification is half made at home and half made in school and they assemblied together just fine so no worries about different versions.. Cheers man. Appreciate this

If all your school has is SW 10, I reckon there's nothing they can do, I mean they can't cancel 30 student's projects based on their school's facilities.

Equally validly, you could say the SEC clearly stated the requirements and the school could hardly argue they didn't know.

All the examiners will have solidworks 2009 education edition also. If it's built with SW2010 or SW2011 they won't be able to even open it.

Are you sure about 2010? I know they cant open 2011 but is not not like office where the format changes every few years? there might be a save as feature in solidworks too.

No I don't think so, Solidworks are really bad like that. They change it every year to "encourage" you to get the new version i.e. they want money!

Ah yeah but in fairness everybody should be given an equal chance in the Leaving Cert, it would seem extremely unjust if some people lost 40% of their DCG because the school messed up. Why punish the student for things he/she has no control over?

SW09, SW10 & SW11 are all completely incompatible with each other, it's a nuisance!

Our class was well into our projects (I mean like, our entire part A's were finished) when our teacher noticed that our projects were asked to be in SW 2009 format. We all thought it was ridiculous that he could make a mistake like that and only realise now... but he e-mailed the SEC and told them that our class will be submitting SW 2010 format projects! So it doesn't make a huge difference to the SEC.. just a matter of preference I bet. But SW 2011 has a few new features so submitting in that format is definitely out of the equation I'd say, as it leaves everyone else using older versions at a disadvantage of some sort

I suspect the requirement for a particular version of the software reflects what the examiners are able to view on their (probably ancient) equipment.

Lads, is there a simple way in doing an exploded view? Repeating this year and last year it took me like an hour positioning each piece like 20mm apart! How do ye do it?

Im having bother with that too! I cant fit the exploded view on the sheet the way I have it now so I have to put it at an angle which looks bad, and if i put it to a smaller scale the parts are kinda blurred

Also, for output 7, what order do the pages go? Is it moodboard first, then new concept design brief then possible solutions?

That confused me two, I only have two pages, but one has the brief and posible solutions and one is a mood board. The brief should be first, mood board in the middle and possible solutions last. I might just put the mood board first for simplicity.

With this little time left you'd wanna have a clue what the rest of it is supposed to be.. I hope nobody is stupid enough to upload there project and risk having it caught by the SEC. How many of the 14 portfolio pages have you left to do?

Lads .. Does anyone know?! The solidworks drawings we're making for part A and B, the elevations/plan/sections etc page, do they want the file of that submitted as .pdf or .drwg (or whatever it is) . I know we have to put both of them in our portfolio, but it must be in our solidworks folders A and B too.. Anyone know? As an adobe PDF or as a solidworks drawing file? Page 43 of the guide to the student assignment says go 'save as' and click PDF but I'd imagine they might wanna have a poke around in our solidworks version of it to see how we projected our views etc, no? My teacher doesn't seem too confident when he says to save it as a SW drawing .. Cheers anyone who can help

You definately cannot put a pdf in your solidworks folder, a pdf is not a solidworks file. We are putting the solidworks file in the solidworks folder, and the pages are all scanned into one pdf in the other folder.

There are people here giving all sorts of detail about their projects. People should know they are not as anonymous as they think on the internet. Just look at some of the usernames. I presume when setting up their account they didn't think they'd be using it to ask others what to do in their exams.

As I said before, the people in the SEC can read boards. Let's remember that.
