To pre-clear Immigration and not have to wait 6 hours in JFK.

Edit: Would love to know if anyone has any stats on this.

The flight from Abu Dhabi arrives at 13.45, by which time all but one US-bound flight has departed and US CBP has closed for the day. Unless Etihad are rescheduling the flight or passengers are going to take the late afternoon flight to New York, the next batch of flights to the US won't be for another 18 hours.

Only 4 weekly arrive at 13.45. The other 6 arrive at 06.45.

Yes I was on a 0645 arrival, and I happened to ask one of the EY flight attendants (who was Irish) because it was my first time on that route and she said exactly what I said above. I am hardly making it up.

I was under the assumption that EY offered seasonal connections to ORD only via Dublin. They have a worldwide partnership agreement with AA in place. Only thing is when I check EY website it is not an option yet.

Last year on flight from AUH to DUB there was 10 who transferred in Dublin to AA flight to ORD. I only know because I heard them ask CC if they could use the EY lounge.

The inaugural flight is now on it's way.
It's being operated by an Emirati Captain and an Irish First Officer (ex-Air Corps and ex-EI).
The Purser and quite a lot of the other cabin crew are Irish too.

I would also guess that this is where Emirates see the opportunity on the route but all in all in should mean a small price war between Emirates and Etihad for UAE passengers going to and returning from the US.

The might even have a bidding war over Aer Lingus!!

Doubt that a bidding war for EI are likely. EY has just invested in Air Berlin.

Can I ask how you can guess that up to 50% of your flight was travelling on to the US?

In terms of market niche, already there is a large cargo demand from DUB-DXB via MAN. So EK is able to offer discounted pax fares on the new DXB-DUB route, if the belly is already full the flight is in the black.

Nice move by EK to have Irish crew lined up for the inaugural. They will already have a crew positioned over the weekend ready to go this afternoon.

I was joking (in hope) about bidding for Aer Lingus.

Perhaps my flight was unique because it was an early January flight with people returning to the US (NYE obviously a lot bigger event than Christmas in the Middle East) but I could hear conversations betweens lots of people (Emirati etc) about going on to the US and how handy Dublin was with pre-clearance.

Curiosity killed the cat so I asked an attendant does it happen often and she said they get a lot of passengers who use Dublin to pre-clear Immigration.

My own opinion is that I can imagine the grilling Muslim passengers get an an entry point in the US and Dublin is a lot more comfortable for them? At least in Dublin they would be the exception as the vast majority are Irish going out or US citizens returning.

Doubt it would be the -300 though, probably the -200.

According to their wiki page though, they are "phasing out" all their 777's except the 300ER's and the 200LR's. Seems that after a few years, Emirates will only use 6 types of aircraft, the 777-300ER, 777-200LR, A380, A340-500, A350-900 and A350-1000. So who knows what aircraft DUB would be upgraded to, a 777-200 (As long as their still in service) or an A340-500 would definitely make the most sense as an upgrade from the A330

Just watching this story on tv3, emirates claim they need a bigger plane sooner than later because there booked out for the next 3 months, so this was has me wondering, excluding there A380 what is the biggest that would fit in Dublin maybe an A340 ?

Isn't the A340-500 currently the best aircraft of its class in terms of range ? I don't know how many they have but I would just assume that this aircraft takes priority on long haul non-stop routes :o

I'd say it's likely that in the not so distant future that this route will be upgraded with a 777 either way.

I was asking around in work about this today but no clear answer. I believe they're giving over half of the Slaney bar to EK/DAA dignitaries on Monday which would lead me to believe that they'll be on one of the stands on the cargo side of Pier E(gates 407 - 425). That would allow the hob nobs to look out at the aircraft on stand whilst they quaff some champers.

My guess is they'll get gate 411,almost opposite 410 where EY operate from. EI generally get 407 for all the LHR flights and EK's A330 would take 409 out of the equation.

This is pretty much what happened today. EK took over the entire Slaney Bar,spent some serious cash in doing so too!

The flight arrived and departed from gate 411 btw.

I just hope the Capt. or FO thought to inform the passengers of the Fire Service welcome or there may have been a few wet seats on the inaugural flight at the sight of all those tenders in attendance!

I heard it was mentioned today by Tim Clark. Not sure what exactly is between the EI AND EY lounges, there are a couple of doors for contractors but i'm not sure if there's sufficient space there to be developed into a lounge.

I was reading an article about Airbus and how the A340 has only 5 more planes to be delivered before production is stopped altogether (although, 2 of 5 were to go to Kingfisher who may not take them). They mentioned in the article how the A340-500 flies the longest route in the world from New York to Singapore, it takes 19hrs. The A340-500 is the only plane Singapore Airlines have to fly the route!

    More info:
The A340-500 was the world’s longest-range commercial airliner until the introduction of the Boeing 777-200LR in February 2006 (However, the Boeing 777-200LR is subject to ETOPS restrictions). The A340-500 can fly 313 passengers in a three-class cabin layout over 8,650 nautical miles (16,020 km). The -500 first flew on 11 February 2002 with early deliveries to Emirates.
Due to its range, the -500 is capable of travelling non-stop from London to Perth, though a return flight requires a fuel stop due to headwinds. Singapore Airlines, for example, initially used this model in a two-class, 181-passenger layout for its Newark–Singapore nonstop route, SQ 21: an 18-hour, 45-minute “westbound”, 8,285 nautical miles (15,344 km) journey that remains the longest scheduled non-stop commercial flight in the world. A total of 36 -500s have been built.

Yep, this is what I meant. Longest range aircraft that's not effected by ETOPS due to it having 4 engines of course. :)

Me thinks that the llikes of the 777 will be around for a long time considering my aul. crowd went from 4 engine Boeings to 3 engine MD know the 777

Program was officially terminated last November due to a lack of orders. I think the last version was an A343 to the German Luftwaffe. (Am completely open to correction on that bit of info)

I think the two lounges back onto each other. The EI lounge has the teardrop lights that are visible in the centre of this shot. (It has a mezzanine level on the lefthand side)

Spot on. I went down to have a look this morning(jesus i'm sad!) and the EI lounge runs right to the end of the tunnel in your picture. EY starts from there(has the brown blinds down).

When EK say they're in negotiations with the DAA it may well be a case of " We've got loads of cash for a top drawer lounge, find us a space" and the DAA scratching their heads as to where they'll fit them in.

The only place that i could envisage them putting a lounge would be the upper part of Pier C. On the upper transfer aisle, right at the end where you turn to get the escalator that brings you down to the lower level beside the EY lounge is a number of grey doors. These are locked but behind them is the old GNIB hall for Pier C. It's like a little time capsule at the moment,GNIB desks still in situ along with various national flags on either side of the hall.

It's not a huge space by any means but a bit of creative construction could make a reasonable size lounge. Failing that,Dr. Quirkeys relocated from the start of Pier C to the start of T1X recently. That leaves a reasonable size area free that could be converted into a lounge. Either way you're practically back into T1.
