Can I claim the dole if I quit my job?

I am employed full time in a job I hate but thats not why I'm quittig exactly, I'm getting trained on a new career path that won't pay for a few month and is not regarded as education or an apprentaship so I won't be classed as a student. I'm working full time 11 years now. So if I quit could I claim he dole?

The dole is for job seekers. My understanding of your post is that you wont be seeking or available for work the short answer is no you are not entitled to the dole.

So if you quit and are looking for a job you're entitled to job-seekers allowance?

Not sure what the rules are now, but it used to be that if you quit your job you could get it after waiting for 9 weeks. Its a long time since i have had to deal with them so that could well of changed.

haha well i could give you the names of at least 25 people I know who claim the dole for the past 2-3 years and believe me are not job seeking. And I will be seeking the job i'm training to do i just want to claim while im being trained as they wont pay me.

Job seekers benefit or Job seekers allowance. The clues are in the name.

You might be entitled to some other payment( doubt it but dont know for sure) but the dole does not apply to you

If you get fired or laid off, you can probably claim.

If you quit, you cannot.

I had to claim about two years ago for a short time after being made redundant, I put down redundancy as my reason for claiming, but could just as easily have quit, nobody in SW checked this out with my employer, it is open to fraud in this regard.

Voluntary redundancy coming up for me. I will be "exempt" from claiming for whatever allowance it is for 9 weeks.
Check the social welfare website. It's fairly clear.

don't you have to provide the Social welfare with a p50 ?

OP probably won't be able claim immediately if he quits..if he was already unemployed and in receipt of JSB he could probably retain his benefit under the WPP scheme.

To claim either of the benefits your employment must have been ended by your employer. You will not receive it if you voluntarily leave employment. You will also not recieve it if you were let go for reasons of indiscipline or incompetence, employment generally has to have been terminated for financial reasons.

Was on contract for a few years, when it ended it was not renewed due to cutbacks, I received a small redundancy payment / bonus, a sort of payoff perhaps not your typical redundancy. My point is nobody in SW checked this out. I could have been simply fed up with work and quit, they wouldn't have known the difference, so while it is all very well to tell the OP he is not entitled to JB if he quits, he could quite easily claim it anyway.

The dole isn't there for when you decide to take a break, or because you don't want to work. It's there for those that need it. You are not entitled to it. You can upskill and still have a job, there's thousands of people doing that at the moment.

25 people? I highly doubt it. Either way, send their names into your local welfare office if it bothers you. They are committing fraud.

Again, welfare isn't there for your benifit, for when you want a change of scene. It's there for those in dire need. Who cannot get work.

You have to be actively seeking work, which means, if you are offered a job, you must have a reason for declining it.

450,000 people out there want to be in your position, they want to have a job and you have the cheek to ask this? What a joke...

You have to be available for and looking for full time work to claim Jobseekers Benefit/Allowance - you won't be so do not have an entitlement to claim.
Also if you quit your job of your own accord you can be disqualified from claiming for up to 9 weeks.

I am considering quitting my job. Although I hate it, I am thinking of quitting because I am setting up my own thing.

If I quit and things fail, or don't go well, can I claim the dole then or seek assistance?

This is in reply to the original question, the way I read it - if you're prepared to wait for 9 weeks, you can leave a job, whatever the reason is.Not saying its right or wrong , just stating a fact, below is from citizeninformation.ie...

Disqualification from Jobseeker's Allowance

You may be disqualified from getting Jobseeker's Allowance for 9 weeks if you:

Left work voluntarily and without just cause
Lost your job through misconduct
Refused an offer of suitable alternative employment or suitable training.

Suitable employment does not include the employment in a job that is vacant because of a trade dispute. In addition, the employment must be suitable, having regard to your age, sex, physique, education, normal occupation, where you live, rate of pay offered and your family circumstances.

I left my job 9 weeks ago as I was miserable in it with issues with one co-worker and what I believed to be unrealistic targets in terms of sales etc.

On following up my claim this morning I have been told that I may be disqualified indefinitely as I left voluntarily. They also checked this with my previous employers, they had a document which stated why I had left according to them which they were quite happy to show me.

I have been seeking other opportunities however nothing has come up yet. If I have any chance of gaining any assistance from Social Welfare I will have to provide them with a "broader statement on my reasons for leaving". Seems as though they are becoming more thorough on the whole..

I am in the exact same boat now as you were in your job!!! although i havent left yet, i am THIS close to doing it in the next week!!! I dont get along with, or trust my employers! im on my final warning for not reaching my targets even though business is totally slumping! but i AM the lowest achiever in fairness! but ive been there 5 years and was made go part time last year due to them cutting staff hours, and i am on the part time dockets! i am currently being reviewed for the year! i am absolutely miserable in there. its not the job as i love it, its the people i work for and with!! i have been looking for new jobs but nothing has come up! what can i do??? and im totally not able to navigate around welfare.ie!!!

I know exactly how you must feel. It's a horrible situation for anyone to be in particularly at the moment. Are you still set on leaving? I wouldn't dream of telling anyone to leave however nor would I tell anyone to stay in those circumstances.

Have you made any queries at your SW office?

well, im actually handing in my two week notice tomorrow!!! and i cant wait!ive worked out i can manage for about 6 weeks, the longest!but i have some pull with another job, although its part time, my friend loves it there and i am in with a good chance there!!! not putting all my eggs in one basket, but fingers crossed anyway! but ive thought it over and over and over and over, dont want to ask social welfare anything just yet, until i am desperate as i want to find a job first! ive come to the obvious conclusion that i am wasting my life, unhappy and stressed and at the end of my tether!! its a risk i am taking, but that job is so not worth my stress!!!

Mine came through with somebackdating but I could have a new job soon yay!!

Hi Trixie,

Im in the same position. Unrealistic sales targets and constant badgering about bringing in new work. I want to try to get a better job with better pay but I am not able to attend interviews and a lot of employers wont take me on coz they need someone to start quickly.

So I am thinking of leaving my job. What are my chances of getting some sort of SW payment considering that I will be applying and attending interviews every week. (ive already got called for 5 in the last 2 weeks)

I'm seriously considering quitting my job. I've been there 7 months now. First 3 months I was happy there on a part time flexi basis working 20-30 hours per week but when I went full time it went downhill. First I went into the butchers in the shop where I got bullied and harassed by the head butcher and left after 3 weeks. I was moved back onto the shop's floor staff but into the car park. Out in the cold, collecting trolleys and bits of cleaning which bores me to death. I can't help think I'm better than this and that I was put on this crappy job by the head butcher for revenge. I've asked the managers how long would I be on this job but they won't give me an answer. I even threatened to quit. Still there 3 months after I issued that threat but I'm nearing the end of my tether. My mind is at me all day on that job. Not knowing how long I'll be doing this or even if I'll ever get off this job is upsetting me deeply. I have an interview for a part time job this Wednesday, really hope I get it, especially when I have going back to college in mind so I'll need a part time job. Otherwise I'll quit my job in March when I will have done that crappy job for 6 months. Now I'd stay if they take me off the car park before that but I doubt that. 9 weeks to wait to claim jobseeker's allowance tho....jaysus!

Just tell them you were sacked. They don't check I've done it before, years ago during the boom times I quit a high volume call centre because I despised it. Went in and told them I got the sack. No problems.

Return to college if you can my friend, or be doomed to doing crappy jobs like that on and off for the rest of your days. I went back to education and I have never looked back!

By the way if you've only been there for less then a year and its soul destroying and you really need to leave then a good cop out to tell the SW is that you "did not successfully pass the probation period and was let go".
