Why Do People Ignore/Block Other Users

I blocked one person because they kept sending me pm's and wouldn't listen to logic at all. So instead of wasting my time/energy replying to them, I just blocked them. Not reading my pm's isn't an option - I have a compulsion to read them nomatter what!

Well let me ask this, why would you need to block someone?

Well definitely not out of fear or cowardice...I blocked the one person I have blocked because he's a twat and I can't stand reading his stuff.

How would you know, They've all blocked you

If someone blocks you you can still read their posts they just don't see yours.

Which was the joke behind my post which now is even less funny because I've had to explain it. God damn it.

I've only put about 4 or 5 on my igonre list since i joined boards.

If someone is a prolific poster of garbage or just being a dickhead ill put them on ignore simply because i just dont want see their posts.

Most of my ignore list are prolific posters, all predictable, all trying too hard etc, so seeing their posts gets tired. I'd say my list is about 4 or 5 also.

Seems like a cowardly thing to do.

Not cowardly at all. The internet doesn't have to be a place full of hostility, and if there's users that are just plain cunts then why get yourself riled up about their stupidity?

It's a pity some moderators cannot be blocked!

Hmmm, I wondered about this. I've been tempted, but if they say anything important, then well you could be getting yourself in trouble.

does it block pm's too once a user is on ignore?
one of the reasons why I closed my previous account was because I thought it wouldn't block Pm's...as it happens that user was banned shortly afterward.

I would only block someone if I thought they would pose a risk with harassing or stalking behaviour.

I only ever came close to blocking two posters due to the stupidity of their posts successfully filing me up and getting me into an argument...one of them hasn't shown up in a while and I've just started to ignore the other guy. But I dunno, compared to most online forums Boards is a paragon of reason. I'm not the most prolific of posters anyway, so I just try not to respond to the political extremists, and the religious extremists, and the posters who can't finish a sentence without using "sky fairy" at least once, and...

I've over 56 people on ignore - Usually if somebody doesn't agree with my opinion they get hit with the ignore button pretty fast.

Oh, by the way, I never will, never have blocked anyone.

I take all peoples opinions into consideration, how else can you have a good, open and frank debate/ argument if you ignore other people?

Sometimes I even realise I'm WRONG

Wow, you're a pretty cool guy.

I have all the gays, the foreigners and the culchies blocked, who wants to read about about their swan cooking recipes. (joke)

I have no-one blocked I think that would be a pointless thing to do on a discussion board.

I've put one poster on ignore, he's since banned. If only he'd chosen different subject matter he would have been a pleasure to read, because he had quite a skill with words.

I would love to see who is boards' most prolific ignoree.

Ah yes, poor old Flutt, he got blasted with piss (and bans) in the end.

If they repeatedly talk tripe and refuse to answer questions then why would you waste your time and bandwidth downloading / scrolling past their posts ?

There's a separate issue alright that I've encountered a few times where people lie and misrepresent your viewpoint in order to point-score - those are dodgy ones to actually put on ignore because the lies and associated character assassination would then be hidden to you and might go unchallenged. But by not ignoring them you run the risk of getting annoyed and dragged into a petty troll-bait.

So it is a tough call as to how to handle those - especially in AH where the standards and rules re objectionable posts are more relaxed.

Still, ****wits will be ****wits and liars will be liars, so if you'd avoid engaging with them in real life then it's best to do so here too.

Easier said than done sometimes, though.

Lulz,I know several people that have blocked you for those very reasons.

I call bull on that because you can't see who has blocked who on boards.

And also because I can't ever remember lying about someone's stance on something or deliberately baiting them.

Unless you're referring to people who do the above and then put me in ignore because I don't let them duck a question by said deflection ? If that's the case you're spot-on, because it happened yesterday.

In over a decade of using mesageboards, I've never had the need to use it (ignore/block). As a way to deter harrassment or unwanted PM's then grand, but because you don't agree with someone or the majority of what they post?
I find with people like that I scan past their contributions, which are predictable by the thread topic or sub-forum and ignore them in general but still ready to light on any bullsh*t post of theirs... much more fun to put people like that back in their box than letting them spout their crap to the user base by simply sticking virtual fingers in ears.

The facile and needlessly offensive stuff is usually in jest; some people can't see it for what it is and take offence.. perhaps it's best for the whole flow of things if they ignore those users rather than falling for the same tired old baiting.

Some of the most interesting people on these boards are those that I don't usually agree with... there's not much point in everyone discussing something with everyone else, each in agreement with it all: diverse opinions make for a fun thread...

I don't think most mean that they block people that disagree with them. And one thing I have learnt from boards is that 98% of people aren't actually open to discussion, a 'discussion' consists of each side stating their argument and why their opinion is right. I don't see the point in that and so I don't bother getting into many of these discussions anymore. many posters just get defensive and bitchy when someone disagrees with them, and can't have a proper discussion about a topic, and so I expect that that's what many people mean. Though none of those on my ignore list actually have intelligent discussion, I just don't take any notice of the posts of those users most of the time.

A while back, I answered a few queries a Boardsie had by PM. He kept asking me more questions, then I found he was asking questions i had already answered. I stopped answering him, but every time I logged on I had yet another PM from him - I began to get freaked out!
It was like being stalked. Anyway, I found out about the ignore function and it was bliss. I later found out he was bombarding other poster's inboxes, and was given lots of warnings.

What happens if a post from someone you ignore is quoted by someone you don't ignore? Do you see it like they are quoting "nobody" or "ignored user"? Or is tne entire post left out?

And can the ignoree view the ignorer's posts?

And what if someone who you are ignoring thanks your post? Do you see that?

I might ignore a few of you (temporarily) just to try this out...

It actually tells you that a person you have ignored has posted a message.

"This message is hidden because stupidusername is on your ignore list. "

I'll stop ignoring you now :pac:

I have on person on ignore and he shall remain there as I find his God-pushing posts unbelievably offensive.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 34,567 ✭✭✭✭Biggins

    I block most trolls.
(The rare one - there is one presently - I let ramble on and expose themselves for what they are, over time. Thus so that in the future, further posts from them can be taken to be of the same possible quality!)
I block people that sometimes are so stupid to not accept NOT what I tell them to be true but what a bit of kop-on, common-sense and with a modicum presence of working brain cells, should know to be true.
...In other words, I don't suffer fools gladly.

You put anyone who puts your views under scrutiny on "ignore". It's your way of evading the tough questions.

there's only one person on my ignore list- he started PMing me out of the blue asking personal questions and when I asked him to stop he stated that he'd continue to do so regardless, so he was swiftly put on ignore. for all I know,he might still be PMing away to his little heart's content !

Rubbish. Anyone I put on ignore is there because they have twisted posts that I have made, as you well know.

I do occasionally give in and click "view ignored post", for the reasons that I outlined above re misrepresentation (like now) ;-)
