Certain people who come out with the same old crap time and time again against people on the dole or Muslims or Jews or whatever don't deserve my time, so I block them.

So you've blocked half of boards.

First post! Why is AH so quiet today?

People usually do it so they can think "I ignored that person" or especially to say publicly that they have them on ignore. It's like it gives the illusion of practical action against a poster you don't like but in reality they usually don't know you have them on ignore anyway or don't really care one way or another.

I had one poster on ignore because her posts made me cringe but now I just skip all her posts instead.

I only block the odd total knob-end who really annoys me. You know who you are...

But how will the public(boards users) know what your private choices are?

That's what I would like to know, who has set me to Ignore/block.

That's basically why I started the thread.

I only had one person on ignore. But it was annoying me so much thinking she might still be there in the background, ranting away with smilies all over her stupid posts that I unignored her. But she still NEVER CAME BACK.

Part of me feels guilty for making her disappear off the face of the earth like that. But the other part now realises that I have super powers and am a force to be reckoned with.

Either way, I recommend trying the ignore function - it's worked out really well for me.

I don't use it. I gather when you do you don't see that users posts at all?

The main reason I don't is that there are a few posters I initially took a dislike to but have come to respect over time. If I had used the ignore button I would still bear that grudge against them.

Plus some of the trolls are funny! :pac:

Have only ever used it once for one regular poster here. I've never witnessed such a high level of idiocy on such a wide range of subjects from one person and their posts just got unbearable :pac:

I have one person blocked and he shall remain blocked for all eternity. He's a fookking idiot and I want to throw a rock at my computer screen every time I read him. The reason? I've a terrible temper at times and let stuff I read on the internet get to me too much. Oh well!

So who does everyone think is the most blocked user on Boards? My guess would be that guy who is always moaning about Bono and David McSavage.

I blocked an as$hat yesterday, it made me feel all warm and tingly like I had kicked him in the nutz and then bitchslapped him.

If they repeatedly talk tripe and refuse to answer questions then why would you waste your time and bandwidth downloading / scrolling past their posts ?

There's a separate issue alright that I've encountered a few times where people lie and misrepresent your viewpoint in order to point-score - those are dodgy ones to actually put on ignore because the lies and associated character assassination would then be hidden to you and might go unchallenged. But by not ignoring them you run the risk of getting annoyed and dragged into a petty troll-bait.

So it is a tough call as to how to handle those - especially in AH where the standards and rules re objectionable posts are more relaxed.

Still, ****wits will be ****wits and liars will be liars, so if you'd avoid engaging with them in real life then it's best to do so here too.

Easier said than done sometimes, though.

I haven't blocked anyone, but sometimes I am tempted to :)
It's not because I feel I'm losing an argument, most of the time I'm not even involved in the debate... I just want to block some because they come across terribly angry (and rude) and reading anger day after day is really draining :)

Seems like a cowardly thing to do.

Have never blocked anyone yet, I find it quite easy to ignore there posts if there posting repetitive rubbish.

I've only put about 4 or 5 on my igonre list since i joined boards.

If someone is a prolific poster of garbage or just being a dickhead ill put them on ignore simply because i just dont want see their posts.

Maybe they just think the other poster is a raving lunatic and not worthy of attention?

I have a few people blocked. Mainly because threads they were involved in went like this:

OP: Interesting viewpoint that I disagree with, with explanations for why they think so
Someone else: An alternate viewpoint, with their reasons for thinking so
Me: My take on the matter, with questions for the other viewpoints to help me understand the other side of things
BlockedPeople: RAWR, STOMP, how dare you question other people, RAWR, SMASH TOKYO
OP: Interesting cogent argument for the other side
BlockedPeople: RAWR, STOMP, don't answer that, LOOK AT ME SMASH TOKYO

Some threads just read better if you don't have people trying to dictate the form of the discussion in the middle.

If a person finds someone e.g. really bigoted and impossible to reason with, and their points simply get on their tits.

I've never put anyone on my ignore list and I'm not sure I understand what "block" means. I don't care what anyone writes in response to me and only reply to their comments if I feel like it and see an opportunity being handed to me on a plate.:D

I've sometimes thought it might be a good idea to block the religious nutbars, but long ago recognised that one of the great pleasures in life is to enjoy seeing them squirm as their dingbat ideas are exposed to reason.:)

If only one could make them invisible and inaudible in real life!:rolleyes:

I'm surprised this thread has only run to one page so far and the usual loudmouths haven't started to chime in yet.
