Yeah. Cos that's what Christians do, tolerate others. The don't push their ideas on how to live on people all over the world. They've never burned anyone at a stake or any crazy stuff like that. They're so laid back and easy going.
People aren't afraid of the church anymore and it's great. These are great times. :D
You do realize that's the logical equivalent of "but they started it!"

Tolerance is a virtue that both those in organised religion and outside of it would do well to learn.

Your argument, however, is an appeal to hypocrisy, one of the most favoured arguments of the AH soap-boxer.

If you wish to go down that route, then not ony have the Catholic church started it but they are yet to finish it. If all Christians are going to some ultimate playground in the sky, then why is the church so concerned with their greedy acquistion of worldly wealth? Is it because, to paraphrase Christopher Hitchens, they know damn well this is all there is?

Their entire ethos is founded on a hotbed of lies in order to manipulate the masses and they're all too fond of peddling a 'Do as I say, not as I do' attitude -and frankly, the less people who tolerate that kind of hypocrisy the better.

Good point. At no point in history has an atheist ever persecuted Christians.

Haven't been to mass in years but I'd imagine at midnight mass you'd want to find the darkest corner possible and KO in it.

I feel sorry for priests and the bad rep they have.

I went purely because it's tradition in my family and I wanted to give a decent donation, after all the priests rely on it :(

Not weighing down on either side here, but the wiki article isn't the most comprehensive. Look up Stalin's time at an orthodox seminary.

So, Stalin only killed Christians? News to me. He was a very dangerous lunatic who killed his own people. Maybe he saw the church as a threat. If you're a dictator, all threats must be removed. Check out North Korea.

According to Hitler's personal photographer Heinrich Hoffmann, in the early 1920s Bernhard Stempfle, a Catholic priest and journalist, and responsible for the anti-Semitic daily Miesbacher Anzeiger, was a prominent member of Hitler's inner circle and frequently advised him on religious issues.

    Anti-Semitic priest.

No offence intended but, eh, . . . they have a few quid, don't worry about them. Donate to a charity. Vincent de Paul are busy this year and Barnardos too.

Also, do you not feel sorry for all the abuse victims in this country? Surely they are more deserving of our sympathy.

He also believes there is a need to counter inhibitions that prevent the open critique of religious ideas, beliefs, and practices under the auspices of "tolerance.

I never said he only killed Christians. I was replying to someone that seems to think that nothing bad has ever been done in the name of atheism and that Christians are the only group who have ever persecuted anyone. When there's a thread full of people whining about how intolerant another religious group are and how they've never been persecuted I'll point out how ridiculous that is.

For every anti-semitic priest there are examples of priests and nuns that risked their lives to protect the Jews. People here don't want to know about that though and would rather continue posting anti-Catholic nonsense all day.
Oh yes and he only persecuted christians, oh yes only them.

Yes, because that was really my point.

"The Church" - What do you mean by this. The global Christian churches, or the Roman Catholic Church. If so I'm in the former, not the latter.

As for the Crusades - I would argue that these were mostly a political venture given that most Europeans didn't have access to the Bible at that time due to being iliterate or insisting on Latin.

The Christian Gospel however, does encourage toleration in society. It doesn't encourage political domination but rather sharing in society.

First an appeal to hypocrisy and now a strawman argument.

My, you are working your way through the logical fallacies today.

Nobody said anything about 'preventing open critique of religious ideas'. I have no idea where you are getting that notion.

Is it like Woodstock for Catholics?

"Look at us.....it's Midnight and we're rocking hard by celebrating mass. Can I get an Amen?"
    Yes it is.

There was standing room only in my Parish..It's not always that way, but I must say it was a delight for me anyway to celebrate together, even if it is only on occasion, or even annually - it was most welcome to see people gathered, it injected a communality into Christmas, to hear people sing unabashed etc. and was a welcome diversion from the mad build up and pressure that has become so common around the festival.

Seriously why go to mass if they going to be drunk!
